Mavs 11-8

The San Antonio Spurs know they need Tony Parker in their lineup to be successful. The Dallas Mavericks are quickly learning they need Jose Juan Barea in theirs.

Averaging 20 points in his first two starts, Barea will look to help lead the Mavericks to their fifth straight win and 10th in 11 games on Tuesday against the visiting Spurs, who are coming off a pair of blowout victories keyed by Parker.

While Parker has long proven to be one of the NBA’s elite small guards, Barea barely played in his first two seasons behind Jason Kidd and Jason Terry. But with second-leading scorer Josh Howard and shooting guard Antoine Wright both sidelined recently, Barea has become a bigger part of Dallas’ rotation, and he’s made a convincing case to become a regular.

Barea had 15 points off the bench in a win over the Los Angeles Clippers last Tuesday, and was even better after joining the starting lineup for the next two games. He had 18 points in a 112-97 win over Phoenix on Thursday, and a season-high 22 in a 100-98 victory against Atlanta on Saturday.

Facing the Atlanta Hawks could be just what the San Antonio Spurs need to match their longest winning streak of the season.

The surging Spurs pursue that goal on Wednesday night as they try for their fifth straight overall victory and their 11th in a row at home over the Hawks.

San Antonio (12-8) reeled off four consecutive wins from Nov. 21-28 before that momentum was disrupted by back-to-back losses. But the Spurs rebounded behind a 17-point win over host Denver on Thursday, followed by Saturday's 32-point rout of visiting Golden State.

The result wasn't as decisive Tuesday night, but the Spurs secured a third straight as Bruce Bowen's 3-pointer with 1:47 left in the second overtime put them ahead for good in a 133-126 victory at Dallas.

"The trite comment that either team could have won is absolutely true," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "We're thrilled to get it done in the end."

Wolves 4-17

With Manu Ginobili out, the San Antonio Spurs had to turn to other players for clutch shots early in the season.

Tony Parker delivered in a big way against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Spurs, rounding into form with their “Big Three” finally healthy, face the Timberwolves on Friday night for the first time since Parker’s huge game against them in November.

Ginobili missed the first month while recovering from offseason ankle surgery, leaving San Antonio (13-8) without the player it perhaps counts on the most when the game’s on the line. The Spurs lost their first three games before beating Minnesota 129-125 in double-overtime Nov. 5.

Parker scored a career-high 55 points, including a 20-footer at the buzzer to force a second OT. It was the best scoring game by an opponent in the Timberwolves’ 20-year history.

Thunder 2-22

No matter the caliber of their opponent, the San Antonio Spurs are beating just about everybody these days.

Coming off a victory over the team with the second-worst record in the Western Conference, the Spurs try for their sixth consecutive win on Sunday night when they host the Oklahoma City Thunder, owners of the NBA's worst mark.

San Antonio (14-8) won 98-86 at Minnesota on Friday for its 14th victory in 19 games since losing three straight to open the season.

"Usually it takes us a while,'' said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, whose team is clicking with a healthy Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker in the lineup. "It usually takes us into March and April before we're really ready to go. I think we're on the right track for sure.''

San Antonio, which has won at perennial West powers Denver and Dallas during its current streak, looks to continue that run of success when it faces the Thunder (2-22) for the first time this season.

Hornets 14-7

The New Orleans Hornets had their breakthrough season cut short by the San Antonio Spurs last spring.

Though both teams could have deep playoff runs ahead of them this season, neither looked ready for that kind of success recently.

The Hornets and Spurs look to bounce back from shaky performances in wins over last-place teams as the Southwest Division rivals square off for the first time since last season's playoffs on Wednesday night in New Orleans.

After three straight trips to the lottery, New Orleans won a franchise-record 56 games last season and got their first playoff series win since 2002 by beating Dallas in the first round.

The Hornets' stunning success ended when they lost a seven-game series against the Spurs in the Western Conference semifinals.

Both teams expect to be back in the postseason this spring, but that'll likely take better performances than they put together in their last games.

San Antonio (15-8) nearly blew a 26-point lead in a tight 109-104 win over NBA-worst Oklahoma City on Sunday, and New Orleans (14-7) needed a late surge on Tuesday to pull out a 91-84 win over Memphis, the last-place team in the Southwest.

Semi-important game tonight. SA is healthy and looking to give themselves a small cushion in the Southwest Division. A loss here is no biggie but they need to establish themselves as being fully back and would do so with a W.
