Although the Orlando Magic have won their last two games without Dwight Howard, they'll probably be glad to have the two-time All-Star center back for a potentially tough stretch.

Howard is expected to be return from a knee injury on Thursday when the Southeast Division-leading Magic open a four-game homestand against the San Antonio Spurs, who hope to bounce back from their first loss in two weeks.

Despite injuries to Howard and its top three guards, Orlando (19-6) is off to its best start since the 1994-95 team opened 22-5.

Howard bruised his knee during a fall in Friday's 113-111 loss to Phoenix, snapping the Magic's four-game winning streak. Howard, who is averaging 21.1 points and league bests of 14.1 rebounds and 3.9 blocks, missed Orlando's next two games, and the team responded with wins in each.

Since a scoring outburst earlier this month, the San Antonio Spurs have struggled through two of their worst offensive nights of the season in back-to-back road losses.

Hoping a matchup against the struggling Toronto Raptors will help, the Spurs return home Saturday looking to avoid matching their longest losing streak of the season.

San Antonio (15-10) won a season-high six straight from Dec. 4-14, averaging 106.1 points during that stretch - 10 points higher than its season average. In the two games since, though, it's shot a combined 38.1 percent from the field, losing 90-83 to New Orleans on Wednesday and 90-78 to Orlando on Thursday.

Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 19 points and nine rebounds against the Magic. Tony Parker was a dismal 3-of-17 from the field for nine points.

Parker had scored 20-plus points in his previous two games - his first back-to-back 20-point games since before being sidelined nine games for a left ankle sprain.

The San Antonio Spurs are again at full strength and appear to be moving back toward to the top of the Western Conference.

The Sacramento Kings, meanwhile, keep sinking lower and lower.

San Antonio should be in good position to earn its fifth straight home win Monday, when the Kings will try to avoid coming up empty on their four-game road trip.

After playing much of the early season without injured guards Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker, the Spurs (16-10) have started to roll with both back in the lineup, winning six straight before losing at New Orleans and Orlando last week.

They bounced back Saturday night at home, hitting a franchise record-tying 16 3-pointers and beating Toronto 107-97 for their ninth win in 11 home games.

Parker, who missed nine November games with an ankle sprain, led the way with 24 points on 11-of-19 shooting along with 10 assists and eight rebounds. He shot 3-of-17 from the field in the previous game, a 90-78 loss to the Magic on Thursday.

"I knew tonight was going to be my night," Parker said. "... I couldn't wait to come back home and defend our court for a nice Christmas. We have two more games over the holiday, and hopefully we can take care of business and get some wins."

After facing the Kings, San Antonio hosts Minnesota on Tuesday before a Christmas Day showdown at Phoenix.

While the Spurs are again playing stifling defense this season, ranking fourth in the NBA with 93.8 points allowed per game, they looked almost Suns-like on the offensive end Saturday. San Antonio shot 16-of-35 (45.7 percent) from 3-point range, with Michael Finley, Matt Bonner and Roger Mason each making four 3s and Ginobili going 3-of-5.

Wolves 4-22

The Minnesota Timberwolves are approaching the longest losing streak in franchise history. A matchup with the San Antonio Spurs only figures to move them closer.

The Timberwolves look to avoid a 13th straight loss on Tuesday night when they face the Spurs in San Antonio, where they haven't won in nearly five years.

This figured to be a difficult season for Minnesota (4-22), but losses in 22 of its first 26 games seemed very unlikely. The Timberwolves, though, have dropped 12 in a row since beating Oklahoma City 105-103 on Nov. 28, with seven of those losses coming under Kevin McHale, who replaced Randy Wittman as coach on Dec. 8.

Minnesota lost a franchise-record 16 straight in 1992, and had another 16-game skid in 1994 that spanned two seasons.

While the losing continued on Saturday, the Wolves did put forth a strong performance in a 109-102 defeat to Houston.

Suns 16-11

The San Antonio Spurs are showing the early season discussion of their demise was premature. Beating them in front of a nationally televised audience might help the Phoenix Suns ward off similar talk about their team.

One of these Western Conference foes can further rejuvenate its season as this rivalry continues on Christmas Day when the Spurs visit the Suns.

"It's Phoenix and we have a history there. It's a rivalry," Spurs guard Roger Mason said. "It's a lot of fun to be able to play on a big stage like that. I think we're starting to play better and better, and it will be a good test for us."

The Spurs (18-10) have won nine of 11 and own the third-best record in the West. Just over a month ago, some believed San Antonio's days as an elite team were over due to a 2-5 start to the season and an aging roster.

Merry Christmas to ALL and to ALL a good night!

Just told my bro Mason was gonna hit a three to seal it...Guess what?

He did.

Mason who?
My bro from Phoenix was asking me that when they put him in the game with about 4 seconds on the clock!
I saw Tony drive and it worked perfect. That has been Mason's spot all season!

Spurs 20-10

The San Antonio Spurs have been pushed to the limit in their last two games while extending their winning streak to five games. They may have an easier time getting No. 6 on Tuesday when they host a Milwaukee Bucks team that has struggled mightily in the Lone Star State in recent years.

After beating the Phoenix Suns on Roger Mason's 3-point buzzer-beater on Christmas Day, the Spurs (20-10) needed two overtimes to defeat Memphis 106-103 on Saturday for their 11th win in 13 games. Tony Parker scored 32 points and had two of San Antonio's three baskets in the second extra period.

"Tony stepped up and knocked down a couple of big shots," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "It was a good win."

Parker has been the catalyst during San Antonio's current win streak, averaging 27.4 points on 53.9 percent shooting and 7.4 assists.

Heat 18-14

o0z5h4-1.jpg

The last time San Antonio and Miami met, the Spurs’ roster was decimated, as injuries to two of their top three players left them sputtering out of the gate.

Two months later, the Spurs are healthy and playing their best basketball of the season.

Southwest Division-leading San Antonio looks to win for the eighth time in nine games Monday when it visits the Heat.

After capturing its seventh division title in 10 years and advancing to the Western Conference finals last season, San Antonio (22-11) got off to a rough start to 2008-09. Manu Ginobili missed the first 12 games while recovering from offseason ankle surgery, and the team lost Tony Parker in the fifth game.

Two days after Parker scored 55 points, he sprained his left ankle 10 minutes into a matchup with the Heat (18-14) on Nov. 7. The Spurs went on to lose 99-83 and opened the season 1-4 - their worst start since going 1-5 in 1996.

San Antonio didn’t get Ginobili, Parker and Tim Duncan on the court together until Nov. 28, and it’s won 14 of 19 games since to move atop its highly competitive division.
