The Marlins payroll....

That's not my argument at all. My argument is that the league went from one of the 4 major sports, probably the second-most popular, to the new national pastime since the advent of the cap..

That happened because..

1) MLB went on STRIKE in 1994

2) Jordan left the NBA

3) Nobody cares about hockey except for people in Canada

4) Nascar didn't hit the national scene till just recently.

THE NFL's rise to the top has NOTHING to do with the salary cap.

That being said, implementing a salary cap is going to be damn near impossible. Who's gonna be the one to stand up to George and say, oh, cut your payroll by $50 million. Or to John Henry. Or Arte Moreno. And if they simply impose a $200 million cap, that obviously does no good. But I don't see a floor without a cap or before one, despite its benefits for the fans.

If 20 or 25 other owners united and stood up to "George" then George would have to abide to the rules of MLB. Bottom line is all of these owners want those big revenue sharing checks from Big George and the owners of the Red Sox, Mets...etc. So, they won't stand up. They are happy sitting back and cashing in and doing nothing.

And IF there is a floor, then teams are FORCED to spend money on players. Hence, preventing teams like the Red Sox, Yanks, Dodgers, Mets...in getting into arms wars and just buying everyone in site. Other teams would be FORCED to buy players which means every superstar couldn't sell their services to just 3 or 4 teams.

Why should most of these owners shell out millions of dollars if they don't have a sweet cable deal like George Steinbrenner. Most of them are still going to make money if they are in big markets.....Small market teams like Miami, KC, Pittsburgh, Colorado, conduct fire sales as they don't have the money to compete. That's what's wrong with baseball....the best teams have owners that buy the best talent...I don't fault the Yankees and Red Sox for always spending the money to win, but it's not like the NFL where all 32 teams have a decent shot each year.
yea its a shame how baseball is now

Mike, we never agree anyway, so let's just chalk this one up to our typical debate. It's an interesting one, though.

Sorry MikeO..Baseball needs a cap. Brings equality to the game..making the game THAT much better.

It doesn't bring equality to the game. The same crap teams you have now will still be crap. Would a salary cap help the Marlins? Answer: NO! If owners don't want to spend money they wont . Cap or no cap!!!!

By the way, we have had 6 different champs the past 6 years in MLB. How is that NOT equality???

Yeah but after there one year run most of the teams are screwed and have to give away their good players. They can't keep their stars. Yankees every year can sign virtually whoever they want. Is that fair? No. Yankees make the playoffs every year. And Baseball has limited playoff teams as it is. Boston and NY are locks to win the division. Meaning the other 3 teams in the division are fighting for ONE Wild Card Spot with the rest of the AL (and NY or Boston...). Is that equal? No. Sorry man, Baseball may be on a roll of having diff. champs, but that will not last.

Every October you see..Atlanta, New York, Boston. That leaves 5 spots for the rest of the league to reach the playoffs on their payrolls...It just isn't fair. Level the playing field. If there was a Cap..Marlins would still fairly be a good team. They would have been able to keep guys such as Derrek Lee, Juan Pierre, Luis Castillo, Josh Beckett, Carl Pavano, Brad Penny. etc. The only two guys remaining from the championship team are Cabs and the D-Train...yeah..thats REALLY fair.

LAA, Chicago, and Boston got rid of their stars after they won? The ONLY team that can't keep anyone is Florida, so lets change the rules for 1 team! :shakeno:

Limited playoff teams WHAT???????? Any team can sign any player. If an owner or team is too cheap then sell the team if you can't afford to run a MLB team. You aren't making any sense. And in the 1980's the Yankees were STILL outspending every other team and they never made the playoffs. You can't ignore that fact! Money isn't as big an issue as its made out to be.

Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh it isn't fair, wahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Life isnt' fair. If the Marlins can't afford to run a MLB team, then get out of MLB! Put in an owner who can give the South Florida fans what they deserve! It's like me buying EXONN MOBILE then crying that Shell, Citgo, and every other gas company is spending too much and I can't afford to keep up with that. TOO FRIGGIN BAD! I couldn't cry to get the rules changed just for me! We aren't playing TEE-BALL here!! Everyone plays, we don't keep score, send everyone home happy. This is BUSINESS. It is competitive. Lead, Follow, or get the F' out of the way!

And the Marlins got rid of all of those players, they couldn't have kept a couple??????? If there was a cap, how would that have changed????? The CAP wouldn't be $10 mill! :shakeno: :shakeno: :shakeno: Where the Marlins payroll is at now!!!!!! Your telling me they couldn't have kept a couple guys. How can they give Carlos Delgado a HUGE contract then 9 months later trade him. THat isn't a salary cap issue that is a "poor management" issue.

So, let's punish EVERY MLB team cause the Marlins had a fire sale.

The NFl moved past baseball before the cap was instituted in '93 and before M:B went on strike in '94. The transition happened somewhere in the 80s.

Whatever, it was around that time frame. It wasn't a salary cap issue that put the NFL ahead of MLB which is the topic at hand.

Many of the smaller amrket owners are not only richer than George but make more money w/ their teams than george does. george puts his $ back into the team while these other whining owners put it in their pockets. It's the small market, whining owners who are the problem not George.

Not to mention these "small market" owners get public funding for their stadiums. Meaning, its damn near free and they put up nothing. George is building his own stadium. Something EVERY owner (like the late joe robbie did) should do!!!!! You want a stadium, your a billionare, BUY IT YOURSELF! Don't make Joe Shmoe making $40,000 a year buy your toys!

and they are getting a piece of george's money through rev sharing which of course they don't spend on players. I think Cincy used their rev sharing dollars to build their new Stadium while george for years wanted a new Stadium and couldn't get one cincy was building one w/ his money.
