Pft - Miami Close To A Deal For Josh Rosen (merged)

I remember they wanted to draft him last year.... Giving up a 2nd, would be a terrible idea.... So they'll more than likely pull the trigger on it.

All the talk has been about chasing Rosen since the Cardinals drafted Murray, but I'm wondering would the better question (and cheaper option) be what would the Giants take for Kyle Lauletta? A lot of teams were interested in him during the 2018 draft process and he has a questionable future in NY with Eli still on the roster and a 1st round pick invested in Jones.

Trading for Rosen is very low risk- he is on his rookie deal & won’t have a cap # if the organization chose to cut/trade him if things don’t work out. We wouldn’t be locked into Rosen for a decade; we wouldn’t even be locked into Rosen for training camp.
Not exactly. He's on a rookie deal of a 1st round contract, and those are cheap by starting QB standards, but not cheap on the whole. We sign up for the remaining 3 years, so this and two more, with an option for a 5th year. And, we're already paying Fitzmagic at the high backup rate, so we're locking into him for 3 years … maybe a decade, maybe not, maybe the coach is tied with him at the hip and gets fired and we go back to ground zero in 5 years when Flores' contract ends … but it's going to be a long term fallout, even if it's not a full decade.

But then why would you trade for him now just to turn around and draft a QB in the 1st round next year? That makes no sense. It would be an Arizona situation all over again. I would like for the them to draft a QB in the 1st round next year but there is no need for them to trade for Rosen now if that's the case.

I think pretty much everyone understands the logic of this approach except for you. It's not the same situation as Arizona, and it's giving us more opportunities.

No reason not to consider Rosen as part of the rebuild.

Think of this like comparing a last years car model that had some "tuning" issues vs. a new shinny car from a brand new line of cars. Getting either one is taking a chance.

One may have had all its problems identified and can be made effective while the new one offers hope, but without the "test of time" that the used one just went through.

Now look at the two as if your life depended on their performance as opposed to just inflating your ego by getting a new shiny model.

Stop and think about all the "new shiny models" that you have championed before and then had to go through the pain of living with them when they failed.

Now reconsider and let me know which one would you want.
I don't see how you couldn't view Rosen as part of the rebuild. I don't see how his teammates wouldn't consider him that. He's a 2nd year QB 1st round draft pick … this is the type of investment like the Packers made acquiring Brett Favre … but I don't see all the positives I saw in Favre at the time. I think Rosen is going to be tied to the hip with Flores …. either they both succeed or they both fail.

I hope to God it's not our 2nd but if it is we better get more than just Rosen...either a later round pick this year or an early one next year.

Agreed - wholeheartedly.

Intangibles matter for QB, a lot. Rosen has a fine arm...so did Tannehill, so did Jay Cutler....the list goes on.

It's been documented his own teammates didn't like him in UCLA. Despite his success. I don't want to gamble on a "me against the world" QB.

We have at least 3 prospects next year who have similar talent without the personality concerns. Why waste a pick at all?
I wholeheartedly agree. This sort of silliness is exactly what I was afraid of. It looks like once again we will fall for the seduction of talent that will never be realized.

I find it hilarious that people say, "a third, yes but a 2nd no freaking way?" Is there really that much of a difference?

You have to wonder who is leaking this to PFT.

According to Armando you have to believe its not the Dolphins camp, as they are firm on not wanting to part with that second.

So is it Arizona? Kinda pathetic to misrepresent a trade to media. If I was the Fins, Id be pissed off.

I disagree, if we trade a 3rd round pick or whatever for Rosen, we would not be marrying ourself to him. It would be just more depth at a position we are very weak in and it just happens to be the most important position in most sports. We need competition at the QB position.

If Rosen sucks in 2019, then we move on, simple. Panthers did this with Jimmy Clausen, drafted him 2nd round, he sucked they drafted Newton next year.

In fact, if we trade for Rosen then I still expect us to draft a top QB prospect in 2020 draft. Unless Rosen plays like Patrick Mahomes.
New coach trades a 2nd round pick (that's the rumor, not a 3rd), for a 2nd year QB who was a 1st round pick with a bad attitude. Not sure how young players jump on that bandwagon and build a good locker room culture. We're not drafting a QB in 2020, and we're giving up on a starter to get the guy with the bad attitude.

Are YOU sold on Rosen and if so why?

Is he worth the investment made in trenches if he doesn't pan out? Is Miami in a rebuild in a position to throw AWAY draft picks?
I don't know what dolphins are trying do. I am not GM. not trying guess what they do I am just going observe. what they do. sometime I agree w there moved sometime I don't. still love dolphins

Stop with that crap. So you think trading a 2nd round pick for a backup QB long term is a good idea? Catch a clue.

I dont think Rosen is worth a 2nd rounder or a 3rd. And Tannehill was not worth the last 7 years due to his over inflated draft status that led to him never being challenged.

The lateral move is, both (QBs) will and can make a living in the NFL. It just won't be at a high level of play, with a million built in excuses for their shortcomings.
If the lateral move is talent wise I have no problems. There was never a question of talent with Ryan. The question were: decision making and identifying defenses and making changes if necessarily (especially pre-snap).

The question is: does Rosen have football smarts Ryan did not? I have not heard that he lacks in that department.

Talent and potential is important but talent and potential does not make you a good much less a great QB. If you do not have it between the ears all the talent and potential means absolutely nothing.
