All time best Running BAck!!!

without a doubt in my mind... barry sanders!
too bad he didnt run for a couple more years...

I don't even know why we go in to such nonsense.:roflmao: Barry Sanders is the best ever!

I'd say Bo Jackson was going to be the best ever, but I'd have to give it to Barry, then Brown, and then Payton.

My alltime backfield would be Jim Brown and Gale Sayers. Not exactly difficult. The most talented big back and the most talented halfback. I'm amazed at the doubts regarding Gale Sayers. Even phenomenal talents like Simpson and Sanders say the one guy who awed them in terms of pure moves and running ability was Gale Sayers.

Payton got the most out of his ability than any running back ever. Sorry Walter, I always default to raw ability when selecting alltime bests. Sayers would easily deke guys you're lowering your shoulder and trying to run over.

Brown and Sayers were before my time. Admittedly over a very short period, but the best back I've ever seen was Marcus Dupree as a freshman at Oklahoma. I really wish Dupree highlights were available on the internet. Perhaps they are. Again, 7 straight games with a 70+ yard TD run. He was maybe 6-3, 235 with incredible speed and moves of the most instinctive halfback. Switzer dumped his beloved wishbone in midseason '82 so he could feature Dupree with direct pitches from the I formation. It was the same year Bo Jackson was a freshman and there was simply no comparison. Many scouts thought Dupree had the potential to become the best running back ever.

It's like when someone asks the most beautiful girl you've ever seen. It's not like you have to see her 1000 different times, in various states of dress, or preferably undress. One look and you know. One season of Marcus Dupree was plenty for me to make up my mind. If you require durability or pro greatness, obviously he's disqualified.

Power, speed, vision, strength, balance, explosiveness, elusiveness, and hands. Barry Sanders was everything and more you could want in a back. He was easily the best ever. He would be well over 20,000 yards rushing had he not retired.

Willis McGahee. 'Nuff Said.

By accomplishments, everyone would agree it's Emmitt Smith.
By talent and physical ability, Barry Sanders without a doubt. Who else could make all eleven guys on the defense look so stupid?

By any definable statistic...

except total yards - it's easily Jim Brown. Take a look at yards per carry, yards per game, and touchdowns in a short season and a voluntarily short career.

Emmitt's Career Accomplishments:
1990 Rookie of the Year
3 time Superbowl Champion (XXVII, XXVIII, XXX)
Superbowl XXVIII MVP
NFL MVP 1993
8 time Pro-Bowl Selection (1990-1995, 1998-99)
NFL Season-Leading Rusher 1991-1993, 1995
1,000 yard seasons 1991-2001 (NFL Record)
All-Time NFL Rushing Yards Leader (17,162)
All-Time NFL Rushing Touchdown Leader (153)
Most 100 yard games (78 - new record 10/24/04)
Emmitt breaks the 18,000 yard barrier (11/14/04)
We can sit here all day and argue who is the best but we all know the man behind the Dallas dynasty was Emmitt Smith.

I think if Terrell Davis would have been more durable he would have Emmitts records in sight, but that is part of being a good RB durability so oh well. I think for the time he played he had a lot of people thinking that he was going to be the best all time.
