Emmitt breaks the 18,000 yard barrier (11/14/04)
We can sit here all day and argue who is the best but we all know the man behind the Dallas dynasty was Emmitt Smith.

Emmitt wasn't even in the same class as Barry Sanders. Sanders would be ahead in all the yards and probably rushing TDs. Emmitt Smith always ran behind a behemoth offensive line and had ALOT of talent around him (the entire O-Line, Aikman, Irvin) Sanders ran behind mostly average - and below average lines, never had a good QB.
You can take all of that out of the equation. It doesn't matter. Barry Sanders was WAY better than Smith. Smith isn't even 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th best. Emmitt wouldn't have ever caught Barry if Barry wouldn't have retired. This is not a knock on Smith. I have always hated the Cowboys, but always liked Smith. But there is no way Smith was ever even close to the running back Barry was.

I dont think Barry would have fit in Dallas running system. You can always say if he didn't retire well maybe if he didn't retire he would have had a career ending injury. Emmitt wouldn't have done as good on the Lions and I dont think Barry would have done as good on the Cowboys they were both used in different ways. The only thing Barry had better then Emmitt was footwork. His heart and desire are nowhere near Emmitts, Emmitt could pass block better then him, and Emmitt was more durable and Emmitts footwork and elusiveness were very good. You can always say IF this and IF that. Well maybe Barry Sanders only wanted 1 ring and IF he played for Dallas he would have got the first one and said I don't have nothing else to prove. IF Emmitt played for Denver he would have had like 30 thousand rushing yards all time. You people need to look at what happened and how it happened instead of looking at what could have happened IF this person was there or IF this person had that.

Are you nuts? Barry Sanders was a shifty back who was always a threat to break a big run, but realistically, in the nfl consistancy is key. Barry would run for minus yards a lot and then bust a 40 yarder. Emmit kept drives going. Barry was a drive killer and a quitter. His style of running was flashy, usually 100+ yards on 3 runs. Give me the guy who grinds out yardage and keeps drives moving any day of the week. Even if Barry was with a good team it would have been difficult for him to carry a team anywhere. Negative plays=punts. And that was the story of Barry Sanders. Emmit won sb's, Barry wasn't even close. I can't say I am a big fan of Emmits, I just call 'em like i see 'em.

Emmitt was good but he was no Barry Sanders, he himself would tell you that. Only thing Barry had better then Emmitt was footwork? Did you watch Barry? He could break tackles better, cut on a dime better, had way more elusiveness. Emmitt was good, his line helped him be great instead of just good. They opened up some darn nice holes for the man. Not saying that takes away from him, just he is no Barry Sanders. Sanders was special, I don't know if we will ever see another runner like him.

Thank you.

I just wanted to add, yes without question, Emmit is the greatest back of all time. How can you argue with three sb's and the all time rushing yardage leader? Any RB's who quit pro football shouldn't even be considered. How can you quit and be considered the best?

HMMMM Cut on a dime and more elusive that is a part of having good footwork like I said thats what Barry had over Emmitt. Barry could never carry the whole team on his back like Emmitt would at times when it got tough Emmitt was the man, when it got tough hand it off to Barry he would try to break for the 60 yard run and probably lose yards on the play then bring out the punt team. Barry was more of a homerun type of player always going for it big and paying the price alot of times through out his career he had over -1000 yards thats the price you pay when you try to bust the big one all the time though.

Every RB quits. Emmitt quit just this last season. Barry quit earlier. Barry wanted to win, Detroit was not looking like it was going to be good for a while. He asked to be traded and they said no. Nobody likes it when someone else stops their dream from happening. He wanted to win a Superbowl, and Detroit wouldn't be able to get him one.

Oh please so if Emmitt quit in 97 I guess he would definitley be the best RB of all time just not have the rushing record and he would still be pretty damn close to the rushing TD record. It is called desire and love for the game something Barry didn't have. Look at Marino the Dolphins never won a superbowl but he still had desire and love for the game. Barry didn't have that he put himself before his team, something Emmitt would never do or did do.

+1 .....emmitt knew it was time to leave the game ..besides what else did he have to prove

Cecil Collins.

Seriously though...most of us are mentioning players we've seen in our lifetime. That's why most of the young folks on this board (myself included) don't realize just how dominate Jim Brown was. There's a reason why most coaches, ex-players, and sports writers say he's the best to ever play.

The best RB I've ever seen play in my 25 years of existence is Barry Sanders.

Drives win football games and Barry was a drive killer. So what if you break a couple of big gains in a game. All that does is make stats look good. I watched Barry and I've watched Emmit. I would take Emmit anyday. He made drives happen. Barry made punts happen. Maybe Barry should take some of the blaim for Detroit sucking for so many years. Someone said he left because Detroit couldn't "give" him a SB, Well if he was the greatest back of all time than why didn't he give them a sb?
