The NFL's career rushing touchdowns leader with 155, Emmitt scored 100 career touchdowns during his first 6 NFL seasons, which was the fastest any player in league history has reached that mark.

I guess he was padding stats here too. Jim Brown probably has this record too, but for some reason it is in the nfl record books as Emmitt's. It must just be some kind of mistake.

As much as I love Barry Sanders myself, I can't put him in the top spot.. He hardly carried his team to the playoffs and he totally disappeared in the playoffs. As far as #'s and moves they guy could have been the best but if it's a big game my team needs to win give me Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith... This guys produced from game 1 to the superbowl.

One season they make it to the NFC championship game. Was he in the big game? No. They didn't have the team to make it to the big game is what I said. Last I checked he retired much later then the 91 season. Detroit was a long way off from making another run.

P.S. Dallas had a good Defense. San frans wasn't too shabby either. Not the best, but they were not that bad.


Oh yeah lets not forget Herman Moore who at the time was an excellent reciever who at one point and time I believe had the most catches in a single season

Wow, too bad the QB wasn't that great. Nowhere near an Aikman. Herman is nowhere near the WR that Irvin was.
 
Barry Sanders was highly overated. He had tremendous skills but he was a great east west runner. The goal of the game is to move the sticks. Control the ball and keep getting first downs.

Sanders had more runs for losses than anyone because of his east-west style. He was stopped frequently. His teams never won because Barry couldn't move the sticks and control the ball.

Sanders was good for getting a long runs at the end of the game when the game was essentially over. His yardage is a tribute to how the prevent defense can be implemented to stop the pass, but give up the yardage underneath when your team is ahead by a few TDs.

Sanders is so well thought of here because of the age and consequent lack of historical perspective of most people posting in this board.

The two best:

Walter Payton
Jim Brown

They won. They controlled the ball. They could not be stopped.
 
Wow...this is a really hard choice to make. Its between Brown,Payton and Sanders.

1. Barry Sanders
2. Jim Brown
3. Walter Payton

Couldn't have said it better myself.. Look at Barry in the playoffs and then every other back mentioned here.. None of them disappeared in the playoffs, Barry did.

Jim Brown is not only the greatest running back every to play, but he is also the greatest single player in the history of the National Football League.

Barry Sanders.

Old timers say that Bronco Nagurski and Jim Thorpe were as good as Jim Brown.I dont know but Jim Brown was the best pure RB I have ever seen.

Barry Sanders was a natural and had great field vision.

Gale Sayers was a natural but could be considered a flash in the pan because of his short career.

As a finfan I must add that Larry Csonka deserves consideration as well.
Other favorites Emmett Smith,Walter Payton.

Having said that it is difficult to compare RBs from different eras.

In my lifetime...hands down it was E. Smith. He WAS gator football and then he WAS a SB champ w/ the boys. Not saying he was the most amazing dude to watch...he just got it done...nuff said... :wink:

E.Smith had the ability to find a crease or crack even when the D was stacked against the run.You would see him run and think to yourself he didnt get anything only to find out he moved the yardsticks 4-5 yrds.
