Armando Salguero Article on Jarvis Landry

There's absolutely no way you let him go for nothing. Let the hype build as free agency approaches - much ink will be spilled on who the big names are and Landry's will be among them. Near the eleventh hour, you franchise him; that's it. Any one of those teams with a desperate need will give up a 2nd and a 4th.

The bottom line is that the coaches don't feel he always runs the routes they call and is too headstrong to ever change. Whether fans want to believe it or not, that is a problem in this kind of offense.

The worst case scenario is you have him for another year at a price tag we can still afford after all the inevitable salary cap moves that are coming.

(And, by the way, you keep the 5th year option on James in place just long enough to get a low 2nd or mid 3rd rounder for him. Jesse Davis is unquestionably your starting RT next season.)

I've proposed both those trades and for some reason everyone thinks it's impossible and stupid.

I completely agree.

The CBA strongly frowns upon franchising a player just to trade him. They can file a grievance against that.

Yeah well it all stemmed from poor QB play, either way. I didn't mean that Juice was somehow unable to run the routes more like defenses were selling out to stop him cause they didn't fear being beat deep.

So, we had to throw him short. I agree we were trying to get the ball on his hands any way we could.

But if those short throws had been thrown 'better' the average would probably had hit 9 yds if anything.

absolutely...but I think Miami might not have resorted to a lot of things we did if the qb play was more efficient across the board...ie under center or 3 step or 5 or 7 step...the 3 step stuff we went to one game cant remember which one and it forced him to stand in the pocket albeit for a dink and dunk primary throw determined pre snap

just so many limitations in what we could ask the qb to execute at a plus clip...

The team stressed rewarding their own last offseason. They told landry to show up on time to prove he was a team player. He did exactly what they asked. If he continually ran the wrong routes then that's on the limp wristed coaching staff for letting that happen. The first time he did it he should have been benched. The 2nd time, fined and benched.

This team is a hot mess and nothing will change until we clean house. We have a live DJ at practices. What do they expect on game day?

Let him walk. No need to have another bad contract on the books for the Harbaugh regime to fix in 2019!

They can continue to negotiate in good faith in the weeks ahead. Even if everyone knows they don't want to pay more than 5/60 they can still franchise him and be willing to carry the one-year franchise tender. Just because it's obvious other teams will want him doesn't mean they are going to hear an offer they like.

Besides, it's a moot point: no one will trade anything for the player unless he agrees to a long-term deal with them, anyway. So Landry still has all the leverage if they do want to get something for him. If he doesn't want to go to Cleveland for 5/70, he doesn't have to.

Is it because we suck that teams always want to poach our players? Like they think that nobody but the best could possibly succeed here so if they do they'd better offer them 5 years 1 trillion dollars!? Seems like nobody goes nuts over other teams players like they do ours. Vernons contract was just insane. Sims got a huge deal for nada. Miller got more than expected. Wd had to overpay branch and Alonso because we were so terrified some team would offer them the world. Seems nearly impossible to maintain talent in miami for some reason.

I wouldn't be opposed to tagging Landry and carrying James on the option, use them as trade bait and just eat the money if we don't find suitors the players will agree to go to and negotiate long term contracts as soon as week 8 is passed.

That would keep the holes manageable.

We could probably only afford one $8 million FA if we did. Hopefully Joyner/Reid/Vaccaro at S.

That would leave coverage WLB, base LE, balanced TE, power RB, developmental QB and possibly developmental OL as needs to address in the draft.

That's doable. 8 picks, 6 players NEEDED. Only the WLB would have to be an every down starter, the rest would be just role players.

We would need 1 sure everydown starter, 3 role players and two PS level players.

If the team knew they didn't want to pay above 11-12 million and knew his asking price was above what they wanted to pay, why not trade him at some point last year to get some value as oppose to letting him go for nothing. Probably would have gotten a low 2nd rounder. The Patriots traded Jaime Collins because they knew they weren't going to pay him big. Why don't we have the foresight?

Stills did turn better offers down to stay. He basically signed for $10M after being very productive for 4 yrs. No tantrums on the field or menacing tweets.

Apparently we tried but no offer blew us out the water and we decided to take his production and avoid an even worse record.

It basically sounded like we almost had a deal for a second rd pick.

This offense will stink up the joint if we don't manage to sign Landry.

I think we are just asking for a 3rd down problem especially if we are gonna depend on some rookie or stills to pick up that slack

Which teams would spend $14M a year on Landry? Seems a bit rich for his role and production.

Here is the list of WRs making 14+:

Does Landry fit in that group? If the only team offering him that kind of contract was Cleveland, would he take it over a lesser contract from Miami?
I say he does fit. He’s better than Adams (he just got WAY overpaid), D Thomas. Dez isn’t worth that kind of money anymore either.

Let me understand the logic. Either overpay your own proven star player or use it to overpay someone else’s? Or, use it to sign 3 Ted Larsen types - which never gives you the results.

“Or do the Dolphins take that $11-$14 million per year and go shopping for an offensive lineman or two, or perhaps a lineman and a tight end, or a lineman and a running back like Dion Lewis?”
