yeah, look at the saints. I thought they were in cap hell, or at least would have been nearly impossible to keep graham, but they found a way to still make him the highest paid TE in the league

yeah but the saints lost older vet dead weight like the de will smith who blew his knee out early last season and had a large cap number this year...the pats don't have quite as easy veteran cuts but any time you go to a agent and tell him we will guarantee your client more up front money for cap relief veterans are gonna listen...especially ones who are unlikely to see all the remaining money on their current contracts...
every player wants guaranteed money...
They still owe Smith $2,352,451 in dead money plus over 11 million to other players no longer with the team
Again you're kidding yourself, or you just don't understand the salary structure as it pertains to the salary cap. Creating the space is the easiest thing in the world, all you have to do is take 5 million of this years un guaranteed salary, for one or many players, and convert it to a guaranteed bonus or bonuses that are due next year, no player is going to turn down having a portion of their salary guaranteed and deferred. Again I'm not trying to be insulting but it really seems like you just don't understand how the salary cap works. Teams have been moving cap space around like this for years and with a lot larger numbers than 5 mill. You can thump you chest all you like about the cap space but if he isn't traded to the Pats it won't be because of the cap. Then again I'm predicting right now that if he is traded to the Patriots, then your next thread will be something like "he's old and washed up anyway."
if the pats want this to happen finding the room to do so is not an issue...guaranteeing more money with established vets is an easy way to find the money they need...
Again, look at the patriot salaries and tell me who are you are converting salary to bonus. It is easy to do, The players always accept it. But the Patriots have done that too many times already.
You can only do that if you have a decent salary to begin with.
just off the top of my head i know they just resigned wilfork and i dont know the numbers but i would bet anything if it's possible that if the pats came to him and asked him to take more guaranteed money up front given his age and his injury history ie just coming back from a torn achilles he'd be interested...but i don't know the rules considering he hasn't played yet under that just signed contract
that's the kind of guy you'd target though...maybe a mankins also who is showing signs of falloff
Wilfork is making the league minimum 1.3M in salary, nothing to convert there.
Brady is making $2M in salary, very little to convert.
You can see the Pats cap numbers here.

As you can see there are few choices.
Like I said Mankins is about the only player that fits the bill. It could happen. But I doubt it.
on NFL Sirius radio that said he was un-trade-able due to the dead money on his contract.
Even if they trade him he would count 12M toward the cap over the next 2 years.
Very little saving for them and they lose one of their best offensive players.
Pat Kirwin said he playing for Houston this year or NOT playing at all. He is usually right on with these type of personnel options.
