It's not that having a pro bowl center isn't better than having an average one. It's that the monetary difference -- given the restriction of the salary cap -- of having the much more costly pro bowl center does not make the team appreciably better than the average center by himself... especially if that center is a dingbat like Mike Pouncey. As others have pointed out, we do not have to look very far for an example of why this is true. The 2013 Dolphins are perhaps the perfect example. Pro bowl Mike Pouncey did not prevent Ryan Tannehill from getting sacked more times than any other quarterback in Dolphins history.
That's because the offensive line is a unit. It's not like having one Andre Johnson and a bunch of Kevin Walters. You have to be at least solid at every position.
As some might remember (actually, probably no one
) I was an advocate of pursuing Alex Mack this offseason. Ultimately it was impossible to get him, and he signed a 5 year, $42 million deal that will pay him $10 million this year.
That's a lot of goddamn money. And I'll tell you something, despite the fact that I strongly dislike Mike Pouncey... if you're going to pay that money to an offensive lineman, pay it to a center. Regardless of the received wisdom of the time I think center is the most important position on the offensive line, not left tackle. But you better make sure that center isn't a ****ing psycho, and to me there's more than reason to believe that Mike Pouncey is at least part psycho.
Pouncey and Tannehill. Resign or do not resign. That's what next offseason is going to be about. Oh, and Clay, too. Lots of chickens coming home to roost next year. There's only so much money to go around. Better to invest in the top money in the individual positions that matter. The offensive line needs to be treated as a whole.
