Chris Clemons- A Must Sign?

Gosh! How much did R.Jones suck this season? Geez, how do you play that badly after a big pay day?

A lot. He went from being one of my favorite players to watch out there to being Wheeler-esque. I think Highzenga already nailed it though, he was used differently. He needs to be able to roam more imo. And while he may not be the best in coverage, if he is playing as a "linebacker" he's better in coverage than most of them, so I guess thats a plus. Does anyone remember 2 years ago that should've been pick 6 where he blanketed Aaron Hernandez? That was great

But about Clemons. I'd resign him to a 2 year deal for a reasonable amount. He is alright back there but not a playmaker. It's already been well defined enough in this thread lol

He's a solid player, BUT I do feel that he's going to get a bigger offer from another team than I'd be willing to match. He doesn't make plays but he doesn't give up plays. As much as people bash Reshad Jones for his play (and he did deserve a lot of flak, but part of the issue was being asked to do different things after it became apparent the LBs were liabilities) he still has more impact play ability.

Now I'm not saying to replace him, but I'm not breaking the bank, especially since there are some decent safety prospects. Like if Calvin Pryor is available at 19, you have to seriously consider it

Id would be surprised if Green Bay don't make Clemons an offer

The difference is very noticeable in how Jones was used. In 2012, he was allowed to roam (which Mike Zimmer has one safety do quite a bit) and excelled at it). This past season, as it became evident that our LBs were struggling in coverage, we switched more to 2 deep. Jones showed his 2nd year that when being asked to play in a zone he struggled. Hell he showed it at Georgia too. He likes to play aggressive, and in year one of Coyle he was able to.

In contrast, Chris Clemmons struggled badly bing the centerfield player in 2012, and played better in two deep. Clemmons just doesn't have the athletic ability to adjust and run. BUT keep the play in front of him in a 2 deep, he's good enough to react there.

I would love to get a play making S in the draft but, can't see it this year unless we go crazy in FA.

I am not a huge fan of Clemmons because of his drops. He was constantly in position to get many interceptions, and was unable to haul a lot of them in. I think if he can refine his catching, he would be a top 10 FS in the NFL. He is great at coverage, a solid tackler, and always in great position. He does not create turn overs, and as a defensive player that is what he is most graded on. Once he learns how to catch, he will be a beast. I do see him as the QB of our secondary, so i would not mind bringing him back. I see how he isnt the sexy big name FS like Byrd, but he will be chaper, and consistent which is what matters.

I agree. Assuming we can get our OTs in FA, we can most certainly use our #19 on Pryor or Clinton-Dix (1 or both of them should still be there at #19). If we can get Jones back to roaming and then sit an athletic player maker back there behind him at the other safety spot, now you're cookin' with gas right there. Of course to get Jones roaming again we have to do something about Wheeler.

It's funny how I've always liked all the players as you Sobe! DT,Jerry,Clemons.

See I will repeat having a guy like John Benton who has made some good OLs out of not so good pieces, will help alleviate the issue. The guy is a REALLY good OL coach, and we really haven't had a good one since Hudson Houck (who also got decent play out of some crap OL under Saban). Don't get me wrong, OL should still be a target in the draft, but I think it's easier to build a good OL than some think (we just have to have the right guys in place)

I think the fact that we only gave him a 1 year deal last year, when we could have signed him long-term, is enough to tell me he is not a must sign.

Our new GM should be looking to upgrade both safety positions.

It is possible that Ireland made a mistake in signing our two safeties to the deals he did. Regardless, when I say Clemons is a must sign, I'm basing it on available options, value to the team, and other far more pressing needs. It's not like I'm comparing him to a Grimes, who is a must sign for different reasons as he is a great cover CB.

Clemons is more like a Misi type, who adds a lot to the team but, is far from a star.

I agree. I would think we could get both OTs, 1 G, and a decent backup C out of FA. Look for the other guard spot and depth (and a future starting C) in the draft. Better coaching will most certainly help. We're fortunate in one respect: this off season looks to have some better than usual tackle talent available.

Well Clemons plays a position where his weaknesses aren't exposed as much as Misi's would be. We definitely need better play in the middle of the field though.
