CK's Draft Reviews: Miami Dolphins Wrap Up

Thanks for the all the work you have put into this draft CK. Probably like many others I thought for sure that the Pats were going to take Hughes at the pick they were at. I just had that feeling, but when he fell to us i was stoked. Even though we passed on him and picked up Jared Odrick, I feel with the pick up of Edds/Misi..we are set at LB.

I would disagree. The "attempt" at Antrel Rolle involved a low-ball offer that was not competitive with what he had on the table. As for the Ryan Clark deal, if they would have added just a little more butter to the top of that deal, he was theirs.

They didn't feel urgency about the safety position and they're not going to think they've immediately solved it with a late 5th round pick.

If they thought Reshad was the answer to a position of heavy need, but they weren't sure he would make it to their 6th round pick, why did they take Nolan Carroll in the 5th round over Reshad Jones? There was no surprise that Carroll was still available. That's where most would have had the guy projected (including the Dolphins, who put together mock drafts just like we all do using a lot of the same information).

It's just very unlike an NFL front office to leave a position of heavy need in the hands of a late round draft pick rookie, especially a junior. It's very rarely done that way in the NFL.

GOOD POINTS ON THE LATE ROUND ASPECT. I agree there and when i step away and rethink you may be right but i still feel they had ever intention of adding a FS prospect in the draft. You may be right though and he may just be a depth type addition. IMO he is a developmental project type with a chance at contributing immediately if say Will Allen is behind in his recovery or if he would struggle in the position switch. As far as clark leaving ive been reading with this jeff ireland thing with dez bryant that this may be the real type of situation that lead to Ryan Clark leaving Miami and resigning with Pitts. If you remember he did say that it was absolutely not about the money.
There were also initial comments made by the agent i believe that just seemed like something odd had changed Clarks mind. Perhaps he was interrogated in a manner similar to bryants with a question he felt was unacceptable. Idk may be a stretch lol but that always seemed like a quirky situation to me.

For all we know, they may make a heavy run at O.J. Atogwe.

The more I think about it, the more I dont really like the Misi pick. I could very well be wrong and I admit I have never seen him play, but I feel like a 2nd round OLB prospect should have had more production in the pass rush department. I feel like he is similar to a Gholston; great workout numbers and measurables but lacking in production.

It's a common misconception that Gholston is nothing more than a workout warrior. He had a pretty good college career and a terrific senior season with 14.5 sacks. Gholston had two sacks in the Michigan game that year, mainly against Jake Long.

I stand corrected. Shows you how much I know

Still concerned about Misi's lack of production though. Hopefully Im dead wrong as usual.

I hear ya that you want more production. But you lost me at "Vernon Gholston"...especially since you haven't watched him play or anything. I don't mean any offense. But there's way more to this kid than Vernon Gholston.

I didnt mean in style of play...just in lack of production, which another poster pointed out was BS anyway since Gholston was better than I thought he was. Obviously having never really seen Misi I am not sure who to compare him to style-wise, just concerned about the lack of sacks. You say the kid covers well and he has some pass rush skills so I guess either way the pick probably wont be a total loss like Gholston was.

He's not a pure pass rusher, you're right. But, there's some thought that you don't necessarily want those at OLB in a 3-4 defense.

I'll give you some examples. One of the best 3-4 OLB pass rushers in the NFL this year was actually Tamba Hali of the Kansas City Chiefs. I believe that the Cowboys offensive coaches considered him to be even better than Elvis Dumervil as a pass rusher. I watched the game and one of the announcers said that Jason Garrett flat out told him that Hali is the best pass rusher they will have faced so far this year even better than Elvis whom they'd faced the previous week. Anyway, point being, Hali was sort of a complete guy who had 13 sacks his last two years at Penn State, not really a pure rusher kind of guy.

And then there's Clay Matthews, an even better example. He had 10 sacks this year for the Packers and was a terrific OLB for them, even as a rookie. How many sacks did he have playing a similar position to Koa Misi in his final year of college? Only 4.5 sacks. He wasn't a pure rusher. He was a guy that was explosive, used his hands right, creative in getting to the ball, very enthusiastic...

Honestly I think when they drafted Koa Misi this year, they were thinking of Clay Matthews last year and how they had to pass on Clay in order to take Vontae because they needed corners so badly. Not precisely regretting the move, but more like, "And now here's our second chance to take Clay Matthews."
