CK's Draft Reviews: Miami Dolphins Wrap Up

Great job as always. Finding this post written and posted when I got home from work was just like Christmas.

I have to say my reaction to most of these picks was very similar. Almost down to the word in Hughes' case... those it was more that -- after Ireland's smaller linebackers comment as his press conference -- I thought they'd take him than I really wanted them to take him.

Very happy to have Misi and Edds especially.

To me this draft had one overriding theme: versatility.

Every player except McCoy (and maybe Carroll, depending on his mental development) can play more than one position. This really is a big switch from Pasqualoni's system, which was very predictable and predicated on dominating players winning their match ups (Porter rushing the passer 90% of the time) rather than a confusing scheme.

Nolan fires a lot more curveballs than Pasqualoni, and this draft to me was all about getting players you can throw on the field and the offense doesn't immediately know what they're there to do.

Happy overall. Though I was disappointed not to be able to pick up a TE.

I think versatility is a good word to describe these players, definitely. They've really reworked the LBs so that they're able to cover.

CK very good job as always! I don't always agree with your assessment of players(particularly Alabama players named R.Mclain)lol!! The one skill among many I'm sure you have is your ability to see a game or have a thought about a player and be able to fully explain your opinion in concise easy to understand sentences.
Keep up the good work man!

Always solid - thanks! Also thanks to you and the others for bringing us so much info this time of year.

Like many others wanted Hughes at 28, but had a feeling they were going to go with Odrick and don't dislike the pick.

I've been worried also about Misi's lack of sacks in college but I'll admit I didn't see any Utah games this year - you make me feel better.

Was hoping Morgan Burnett would be there in the 3rd, and after he went was also hoping for Pitta, but don't hate the Jerry pick and know they were high on him after the Senior Bowl.

Love the Edds pick, but then I'm biased as a Hawkeye fan. Saw every game this year and he turned around a few games.

After that, I'm pretty limited - didn't see as much football this year, especially college.

Thanks again.

I would disagree. The "attempt" at Antrel Rolle involved a low-ball offer that was not competitive with what he had on the table. As for the Ryan Clark deal, if they would have added just a little more butter to the top of that deal, he was theirs.

They didn't feel urgency about the safety position and they're not going to think they've immediately solved it with a late 5th round pick.

If they thought Reshad was the answer to a position of heavy need, but they weren't sure he would make it to their 6th round pick, why did they take Nolan Carroll in the 5th round over Reshad Jones? There was no surprise that Carroll was still available. That's where most would have had the guy projected (including the Dolphins, who put together mock drafts just like we all do using a lot of the same information).

It's just very unlike an NFL front office to leave a position of heavy need in the hands of a late round draft pick rookie, especially a junior. It's very rarely done that way in the NFL.

Exactly. Many of these posters claiming Jones has beaten out Culver and Clemons already have really no idea what they are talking about. If they wanted Jones so bad, wouldn't they have taken him over Nolan Carroll, a player who barely played in college? Heck, wouldn't they have taken him over AJ Edds if they believed he was their answer at FS, basically the most important position in a defense?

For all we know, they may make a heavy run at O.J. Atogwe.

Yeah, but you sure as heck don't plan your offseason agenda with FS around "heavy run at Atogwe". Thats risky and leaves a huge void in the defense if it fails. I don't think they make a run at Atogwe.

Good read - great anaysis. Much more in depth than anything else I can find on Miami's draft. I appreciate all the time you spend on this stuff.

Great Post!!!!!!!!

IMO Will allen will be moved to the FS spot, unless they sign Sharper.

What I am more interested in, is the previous post you made regarding Mike Nolan's D and the role of each player for a specified purpose in the 3-4 / 2-4-5. How do you see post draft, which players will fill stated roles?

Wonder your thoughts on this. I've seen posted by many the FS is most important position in a defense. I truly disagree with that. SS and Moe LB are of lesser importance IMHO, but afer that the FS is least important.

Every position on a field is important, but you can easily get away with having a FS who is smart, instinctive, has some range and will be in the right position.

They are not impossible to find, and I think Culver will be just fine. Always have felt that way. I also feel this draft wasn't great at true FS, and they want more experience and better eyes there.

Reshad Jones is a SS whenever I watch him. He'll be groomed to succeed Bell.

Great post CK. I always read your posts when I see them. Especially your reports like this one. Us hardcore Dolphins fans appreciate it. It's better than the Miami newspaper sports writers a lot of the time.

Many thought we wouldn't make a run at Marshall.

And even more thought there was a zero percent chance we'd draft a 3-4 DE in the 1st round.

Yeah I agree. But Marshall was a known quantity to be traded. He had a price. Atogwe is a huge player for the Rams and they will pay him 7 mill(110% of original contract). I see the Dolphins trying, but Rams matching anything they put out. Unless its like the Dolphins doing an absurd amount, which I cannot see after they got Dansby and Marshall.

I absolutely agree with the point CK is trying to get across in this thread.... it's not so much about getting guys that can play straight forward... it's about getting guys (particularly LB's) that can play laterally, backwards,... guys who are good with their hands... can cover, etc...

That's why I think a lot of people around here are wrong about Kindle... I think he's a guy that projects well at OLB in a 3-4 defense... sack numbers don't tell the whole story... and I think he's a guy Miami was interested in but chose to go with Misi because of other issues with Kindle...

Basically all of the potential "conversion" guys that we all poked and prodded to death until they were black and blue (Derrick Morgan, Brandon Graham, Jerry Hughes, etc.) all went to 4-3 teams... when you watch Misi on tape.. you see a guy who clearly thinks like a linebacker and spent a lot of plays turning and running 20+ yards downfield....

He covered Glen Coffee out of the backfield a lot against Bama in the Sugar Bowl when he wasn't blitzing...

You can't rush 7 guys on every play....or even 5... somebody has to cover... and they got that with guys like Misi and Edds...

I think this defense is going to rely on getting more pressure up the middle with the defensive lineman...as opposed to watch you saw last year when teams knew the pass rush was coming off the edge with Porter/Taylor... it's easy to game plan for and neutralize...

Elite QB's in this league don't mind pressure coming off the edge...they'll step up into the pocket and pick you apart... it's the pressure coming up the middle that they can't deal with...

It's going to be more difficult for teams to identify where the extra pressure (blitzer) is coming from... that's how defenses like Baltimores, Jets, etc.. make it work...

With a guy like Misi, he has the ability and experience to rush the passer... or he could be dropping into coverage....etc..

You're dead meat in this league if you don't have linebackers that can cover...or unable to get pressure up the middle..

This draft was obviously focused on getting Mike Nolan off on the right foot by getting guys who are versatile and fit his defense...
