I've gotten to meet a lot of people, not too many Fins.
Dan Marino's kids go to my school. I don't think he's a particularly nice guy just from the way he carries himself, but I've never tried to approach him because I haven't had a reason to.
Josh Beckett seems awful because he's not a fan of the press, but he's actually really, really, really cool. I stayed in the team hotel by coincidence last year in Arizona when I went out there to see them, so I met a bunch of guys. My dad was getting a massage at the hotel one morning and Beckett was next, so he was coming in as my dad was going out. Later that day, we're sitting in the lobby and Josh comes out, notices my dad, stops to talk to us about how he likes his head rubbed and why we were out there and stuff. It was really cool of him just to stop and talk for a good 5-10 minutes.
Other guys I met out there: Lenny Harris is as cool in real life as he seems with the team. He's just a good guy. Alex Gonzalez and Luis Castillo were both very polite. Jim Mecir was pretty funny...scared the crap out of Guillermo Mota by grabbing him from behind. Got a chuckle from that one.
Best scene, though, was easily the piano. This hotel had a grand piano in the lobby. After one of the games, which Florida had won, they all just hung in the lobby for a while to figure out what they wanted to do for the rest of the night. Juan Encarnacion sits down and starts playing some salsa tune. Scott Olsen sidles up and decides he can do a better job, so he kicks Inky off and starts banging something awful. Beckett comes up and informs him how awful he is before sitting down and playing a perfect rendition of "Wind Beneath my Wings". Fricken hilarious.
Jack McKeon I've met three or four times. I got into good favor with him by defending him to SI when their humor columnist trashed him four weeks in a row. I was in Chicago in 2003 and asked him if he had seen the letter, which they printed. He said he had, so I told him that I had written it. He talked to me for about 15 minutes, just standing on the field. Then he grabbed a ball from batting practice and signed it. He remembered me the next few times I saw him down here.
Larry Beinfest is really nice. Jeffrey Loria is pretty cool. David Samson is a salesman, but what did you expect? He's got a job to do and he's trying to do it.
I met Zo once when he was sick. I was in the tunnel after the game with a bunch of kids and he came over to take pictures and sign autographs by his own desire. I guess he just doesn't like being interrupted at a meal. I personally never approach an athlete in a restaurant. To me, that's his/her time.
But the best people I've met are Len Kasper and Tommy Hutton. I want to announce, and I got to go up into the booth a couple of years ago. I met Tommy and found Len's e-mail address (too long of a story). This was three years ago. I still converse regularly with Len even after he moved to Chicago. Tommy has done numerous interviews for me whenever I've asked him (including
this :D ).
Those are my stories. Enjoy.
