Could have Fixed RB and QB

Maybe I should clarify. I see drafting interior OL and RB both as mistakes in our current situation. RB in the top 15 or even the 1st round is a mistake, IMO, unless you have the luxury of being able to focus on that position, as most perennial SB contenders are (not us, obviously). The Saints may fall in that category, but I think they still have holes on D that need to be addressed, which is the only reason I see it as a mistake, albeit a minor one.

When it comes to QB, on the other hand, I don't see how a team focuses on anything else until they have a legitimate starter at the position. I'm not talking the next Marino, I'm talking a good starter, at the very least; which is something we haven't had since Marino left. When you are in that situation, you draft QB in the first round, period.

In hindsight, it's easy for people to say, "Mallett went in the 3rd, so it would have been a reach." So, if we drafted him in the first, people would have been saying it was a reach? **** no. They would be saying, "finally, Miami takes a shot at a legitimate QB prospect." Yeah, a lot of teams passed on him and all of them are QB-retarded teams, such as the Miami Dolphins.

Absolutely. I agree that having a legitimate quarterback already in place, and having in general a roster that's capable of competing for championships is a more ideal situation for drafting a RB in the 1st round. However, I disagree with the blanket statement that drafting a RB in the 1st round is a mistake.

REACHING in the 1st round is a mistake.... doesn't matter what position it is.

Running back was one of Miami's primary needs this off-season... and if they already knew that they were going to let Ronnie and Ricky go, and had to draft a RB anyway... they would've been much better off to just go ahead and take the best one in the draft at #15, rather than trade up for Daniel Thomas.

The quarterback situation and philosophy is one I've subscribed to for the better part of 30 years... there's no excuses for any of this effort Miami puts forth to repeatedly avoid quality prospects at the position.

Fact is, once you hit on that franchise quarterback, it allows you so much more room for error with every other decision you make. Your franchise will still have stability until you get all the other pieces in place.

You do NOT have stability within your franchise when you're searching for a quarterback... all the Jake Longs, Mike Pounceys, Brandon Marshalls, and Cam Wakes a roster can possibly hold won't change it.

The OP is dead on here... but it's not a revelation. Miami had the chance to address BOTH the quarterback position, and come away with the best RB in the draft in the SAME draft... we talked about it at length over and over again before any of this even transpired for months leading up the draft.

Miami's front office just doesn't get it. I have absolutely nothing for 'em as a result.

Alot of people on these threads are clueless. Why are people crying about players we missed on and players we shouldnt have drafted. Look at this regimes drafts and look at the hits and misses. Dont forget to throw in Bess Starks Mcdaniels Carpenter. How can you bash Daniel Thomas and you didnt see him play in a real game yet? He could end up the best RB in the draft, we didnt see them play so we dont know. And why would we draft Mallet and we have to win now? We need a vet at QB.

I think Reggie Bush was a huge pickup. Used correctly Bush is one of the most dangerous players in the nfl. Saints lets him go because they didnt want pay him and bush wanted more touches which wasnt going to happen with ingram coming in. And they also think that Bush in replacable, big mistake on their part. Steal!!

I understand peoples fustration with Henne but you have to understand that he had to deal with Dan Henning. I THINK that a coordinator that can draw up some good plays can make a huge difference in his performance. Plus he has a legit homerun threat coming out of the backfield this year. Henne has alot of potential and the weapons with the plays to bring it out. Thats how I look at the our QB situation.

I think the thing that bugs me most about the Mallett thing is just that he didn't have to be the team's ONLY answer, you know? They didn't take him in the 1st round at #15. OK, that was their prerogative. But then he fell all the way to the bottom of the 2nd round where Miami was able to trade up relatively cheaply, and you could have had the guy pretty cheap right there.

He wouldn't have needed to start in Miami right away. You can look out for the team's long term future and still field a good football team. Those things are not mutually exclusive! Everyone seems to want to say that they are. They're not. Hell you could have drafted Ryan Mallett and then STILL traded for Kyle Orton on top of it. Then you take care of your QB position for the present, and the future. You sign an Ahmad Bradshaw instead of a Reggie Bush (for pretty much the exact same price) and suddenly you've got a back you can actually rely upon to take 15 carries a game.

There are reports that say the Dolphins are $9.6 million under the cap right now. And yet they've still not given Soliai a contract extension, which would free up even more cap space. There are other moves the Dolphins could have made in free agency to help them be a good team now, AS WELL AS in the future...but they've foregone those moves.

You have to work smarter, not harder.

Well, they won't be around much longer so whatever.

not that I think or believe mallet would've been the guy, no one knows if he'd have his head on straight in miami while in NE he's around the best in the business about getting the most out of problem children. However, having the mentality of "win now" vs. "an eye to the future"... it's worked out real well for us in the past 20 years hasn't it? We passed up on Drew Brees because we "needed" a 3rd corner so we could "win now" vs teams that had more than two good WRS (we got raped in nickle and dime packages), our win now mentality got us ronnie brown instead of Aaron Rogers. Our win now mentality got us daunte culpepper instead of a healing drew brees. hmmm our win now cost us a 2nd round pick for A J ****ing feeley. it cost us a 3rd round pick for lamar ****ing gordon. it cost us a buttload of picks for Ricky williams who in fact did help us "win some" but never even won a playoff game with ricky. (which is why I still don't believe in wasting picks on running backs because even ricky in his prime didn't do **** to win us any games). No win now is not the best mentality, you have to have balance.

Ya know, I finally drank enough to purge 2004 (lamar gordon/ aj feeley) from my memory and you just dredged it back up... Thanks.

Actually, they should have shot craps with Mallett at 15 and then gone after the runner. The only way I will look back at this with crow in my mouth is if Pouncey morphs into the second coming of that great Ala player, Dwight Eugene Stephenson. .. and even then maybe not even.

Sacrilege. Stephenson was worth a top ten pick. The greatest center of all times. I cried when he retired.

Your font won't be the only thing blue if you hold your breath waiting on that one... Dwight could snap the football prior to leaving for the NFL...

If Ingram stays healthy I have no doubt he'll be a beast in the NFL. Thomas- I have no idea, his running style looks more like Brandon Marshall than any of the great running backs to me. If that doesn't translate to the NFL and he fumbles a lot he could be a disaster.

Mallett looked like the real deal in that preseason game, he might already be the second best QB in the AFC East. I remember looking back to the draft, I actually felt a little bit of optimism building when they announced "Miami traded in to the second" I remember thinking "OMG, we're actually pulling the trigger on Mallett" Then I remember thinking "WTF!!! Thomas!?!?"

If Pouncy is anything but a real good center the whole draft could be one of the worst in dolphins history, and that is saying something with this franchise

Ha! Wow. One game, against 3rd stringers..forget it.

Compared to what? The guy had 4 god damn carries in the first preseason game of the season. I hope to hell you're not knocking the kid b/c he didn't run for 673 yards

My only point is that people are using the fact that Ronnie and Ricky did not have big first preseason games as proof that they are washed up. So fair is fair, since d Thomas had a worse first game, he must be even worse then Ronnie and Ricky are.

It's not my logic or thinking, just saying it works both ways.

I would have rather us draft offensive lineman one and two. We had two decent power backs here in Miami we could of resigned for a year. What we do not have is a RT, and a left or right guard that can pull. Instead, we have a life-long guard trying to play center that has had problems snapping the ball in his short career as a center.

"I agree about Thomas. Watching Thomas run in the preseason game he reminded of a former dolphin J.J. Johnson they look very similar running with the ball.

No ****ing way bro. I texted the EXACT same thing to JCane after Thomas caught that pass and ran about 12 yards with it. Thats exactly who he reminded me of. Both 2nd round picks. JJ Johnson from Miss St. He was a total bust.

I addressed the J.J. Johnson comparisons in another thread around here right after the draft...

Johnson was a MUCH more polished runner as a prospect than Thomas is. J.J. Johnson broke more tackles in the Egg Bowl in 1998 playing injured than Daniel Thomas has ever broken in his career at K-State.

Johnson ran with much, much better pad level and significantly more powerful than Thomas.

Daniel Thomas runs a lot like Beanie Wells.... a 230 pound back with the pop of a 190 pounder. They both run like scat-backs... it won't work in the NFL... Thomas has to get better, and fast. There's no way around it.

Which TE's would that be? The ones that every reporter in South Florida says are sucking eggs in camp? The same TE's that made 0 impact in the passing game last season?

yes, i was being sarcastic

Last season's stats will tell you they're washed up. Was Ronnie Brown much of anything anyway? Not really. People using the first week of preseason games automatically lose whatever argument they're engaged in anyway for using meaningless stats.

I will be shocked if Daniel Thomas turns out to be anything. He just doesn't look like the NFL type to me, but what do I know? Even looking at his college highlights, he seems alright, decent player, nothing that was above that. I don't get why we needed a 2nd round pick to get him. I was disappointed in this draft, given that they know they better do something soon or their jobs are at risk.

You just admitted you don't know anything about it as well as not understanding why a 2nd rd pick was needed to get him. The proof is in the pudding
