I can't see how anyone can say we are better right now than we were a year ago at this time. That is not even being realistic. At this time last year most posters here were as high on Claybo as they are this year on Albert. Personally I can see Fat Albert having about the same kind of year as Claybo had, but lets ignore that and say Albert works out fine. That gives us exactly two starters right now. This time last year we had 3 starting guards, ( richie, Jerry, and the guy from the bears), we knew Pouncey was the center, and we at least knew who our tackles were going to be (unless they were gonna draft one in the first).

Now you can make a case that we are going to add several more players and become a better OL, but as of right now we don't have but two starters with Shelly being an average backup. We need two guards and a tackle AND draft at least one of each, just to be as good as we were this time last year.

You want to see a team go 0-16 just go ahead and trot out an OL consisting of Albert, Dallas Thomas, Pouncey, Shelly and Garner and see how long it is before Ryan is in the hospital. That lineup will have people talking about John Jerry like he was Larry Allen.

All of this just goes to show that asking about the OL at this point isn't a good idea considering the team isn't finished building it.

I say no...
1st off if Albert plays to the level he can he is better than all the linemen we had last year including Pouncy (IMO pouncy should be playing guard and get a real center to snap the ball)...

bam better than last year right there...

In all seriousness though, in theory we could be worse. HOWEVER, the OL is all about chemistry and scheme fit. It's alarming how many plays last year had both Clabo and Martin flat on their backs within seconds so having 2 OTs that can stand up straight should help. In theory Shelley Smith should help as well.

Having John Benton as the OL coach can not be understated either. Whether you feel Jim Turner was unjustly fired or not, the OL regressed under him.

For those who believe that sacks are the only thing that matters, this is not a thread for you, as it is about the 684 pass play Miami had last year, and not only the 41 where the OL allowed a sack.

Last year, our interior OL did well in pass protect until Cog left. A closer look.

Pouncey was the #1 C in pass protect with a grade of 7.6, gave up 2 sacks, 3 hits, and 9 hurries.

Jerry was #10 of all G's with a grade of 6.8, gave up 5- 4- 16.

Cog was #23, with a grade of 1.2, gave up 6- 3-2.

Garner (-0.3) and Brenner (-6.6) did not play well in limited action, and no one, other than Cog had a positive grade on the run.

At OT

Clabo was #46, with a grade of minus 0.8, gave up 11- 10- 31 but, 3- 4 13 in the last 9 games. Howard was at -1.0.

Martin was # 56, with a grade of minus 3.0, gave up 7- 7- 15.

McKennie was #57 with a grade of minus 5.1, gave up 7- 9- 23.

Again run blocking was a disaster.

Now, we have Albert who was #11, with a grade of 14.4, gave up 4-6- 13 missing 4 games.

The remaining options for now are Wharthon at OG who is 33, and Clabo at RT. Anyone thinking we are getting 2 or, possibly 3 starters from the draft is not being realistic. And IF we have 2 rookie starters, we could very well be worse on the OL this year. JMO

it's impossible, Miami had the worst OL in the history of the sport last year. Poor Ryan didn't have a chance.

I guess an argument can be made that it's possible for the OL next season to actually be worse. - at least 4 notches worse!

However considering the Advanced NFL stats objectively rank free-fall from #6 in '12 to #28 in '13, it's incredible RT17 actually demonstrated marked improvement. :idk:

Albert is clearly an upgrade at Lt than anything we had since Long left. That right there should take away alot of sacks from blindside! The guy we got from rams is young and with new line coach could suprise. And I have no problem seeimg 2 rookies on front line. Lineman can start from day 1 as rookies and do fine. Webb and Sims did great when they were young . But then they played with Dan too.

It's definitely possible but unlikely unless we see injuries. But we definitely have to wait and see who's going to line up on the line with Pouncey and Albert. Right now we only have 2 proven starters.

It would be very difficult to be worst than last years unit. We have a bonafide LT and Center, a new OL coach that's proven to be pretty good and a new OC that may be able to scheme his way out of poor oline play. I don't think you guys are giving credit to the players we have from last year. D. Thomas will be in his second year with a full NFL offseason to get stronger and better, SAM Brenner i think his name is actually played pretty well given his draft status and limited reps. So I'm thinking alls we need to do is draft a RT and maybe another guard in the later rounds and let them all battle it out. Maybe also bring an older FA like Joseph, or Winston for insurance purposes.

Well I have seen him play and he really isn't that good. The comment was he was on a bad line and couldn't crack the lineup, he has been around a little while and there were not stellar players keeping him on the bench. Its just as stupid to say he is an upgrade over Jerry based on 2 games.
people believe what they want to believe. If you choose to believe he is an upgrade over jerry than that's what you believe. There is a reason he wasn't the starter last year so lets quit acting like he the answer as our starter just because we signed him. He will be good in run blocking and poor in pass basically

I dont know why you are getting so defensive. I was clear about what I gained from watching two games. 2 games tells a lot. I watched every snap that he played and focused on him the player, not just the rams as a whole. Ive also seen every play Jerry has played and I know that he does not fit here in Miami. Im not sure where the comment about him being the answer because we signed him comes from. I think he will be a strarter based on what we have and what his skill sets are.

Not for nothin but you're giving off the same Brandon Gibson "Rams didn't want him, nobody wanted him, he's not as good as Amendola, we don't need him, he's not as good as who he'll be replacing ad nauseum (and dead wrong) vibe you bullheadedly locked into last time around :idk:

Hell, I'll argue the clear upgrade at the coaching spot alone says that won't happen.

For now, there is little of nothing left in FA on the OL. I expect Hickey to add a couple of vets on 1 year deals after the draft, and hope that works out.

One other thing to consider is that our RB's and TE's did RT or the OL no favors in pass protect, and that has yet to be addressed as well. I think that Clay, Sims, Miller, and DT will improve from last year but, we shall see.

Then maybe you should become a OL coach, because those who get paid 6 figures to decide who plays OL for the rams decided he was good enough to sit on the bench behind some very average players. After his trip to the probowl this year you can sit back and say "I told ya so", but until then you will have to forgive me if I take the actions of the OL coaches that saw him every day for months over what you saw on two game tapes. :rolleyes2:
