Darlington: Dolphins players and front office people confused with Ireland's plan

Ireland would be a good scout but it's become painfully clear that he shouldn't be in charge of anything

I wonder when Ireland scouted David Garrard. Was he playing flag football somewhere? Local bowling league perhaps? Maybe he saw him at Bed Bath & Beyond with his wife? I am sure he would be totally more comfortable with watching David Garrard get a medical checkup vs. watching Alex Smith lead the 49ers to a huge win over the Saints & Drew Brees in the playoffs, or Matt Flynn carve up the Lions for 6 TD passes & 480 yards.

Jeff Ireland is a moron. He's paid real money to Paul Soliai, a completely overrated "run stuffer" who has had only a handful of impressive games for this franchise, a nickel corner/free safety that everyone lauds for his versatility (which really means we don't know what his best position truly is), a career backup offensive lineman, and a special teams player who had 3 sacks for the Jets last season. Real money = cap space. And we still don't have a QB. These 4 nobodies took up at least $12M in cap space. Unbelievable.

There's never been a plan with Ireland.

Four years of his pathetic oversight and we still don't have a third CB or starting right guard/tackle. Those are the bare MINIMUM roster spots that should have been filled already. Every move is reactionary, and every move is made to fix a previous blunder. I've been saying for almost two years he needed to go. Thankfully the crescendo is beginning to hit its high note. Only a matter of time until it takes Ireland with it.

You don't see the plan?

Is the plan not clear as day?

Go after big splash A Fisher, falls through; so you fall back on a hungry assistant coach Philbin which is probably a blessing in disguise.

QB Plan:

A. Manning...falls through....B. Try to bring in Flynn at low price to compete with Moore, and bridge gap to rookie QB coming in, in case we can't get one we want this year.

C. all of the above with Alex Smith, D. all of the above with Garrard.

Manning was the only real way we'd be SB Contenders this year, any other QB signifies a slight rebuild, or at least retooling.

With that comes hard decisions like letting Carey walk and cutting Bell. You know why they probably cut Bell too right? I've seen many articles talking about how they might need to restructure his deal. Maybe they were trying to do this and Bell's agent said no, so they said bye.

As for an anonymous player not knowing the plan, and us getting verbally thrashed by Joey Porter who the **** cares. Porter is salty because they didn't resign him when they knew he was too old to be productive. Fact is, it was a smart move. Heads roll in business. Ask any employee who has been fired how they feel about their boss.

Btw, Warren Sapp is an idiot and I can't take him seriously at all, if you ever watch Inside the NFL you'll know what I mean.

This is shock journalism at its finest, it is how Darlington got to his position, as for those "anonymous" sources, I really have trouble trusting it. If you've ever watched season 5 of the Wire or know anything about journalism and its current plights you'd understand why.

I wonder what Ireland would have to do for it to be anymore obvious that he is a Team Cancer. That term shouldn't only apply to players.

We are all so willing to cut a player who isn't getting the job done but we seem to lag when it comes time to get rid of a coach or GM that is doing the same. It all comes down to wins and so far Sparano has paid ( a year too late) and Ireland is treading water still. If Philbin can win 8-9 games I will eat my words because clearly it was the coach but if I am right we will be one more year away from having a winning record and have to go through finding new FO people next year, more unecessary upheaval.

I'll say this. I agree that we needed to cut or restructure Yeremiah Bell...

... but the guy has been with the team for 8 years and is a respected leader in the locker room. A good guy.

To pull that **** on him, I'm sorry. That's some low ****. I'm all for not letting slip what you're planning to do, and secrecy, and all that crap, but that's just some bush league **** right there.

.........maybe Irelands plan is to make everyone believe he had one in the first place?

It's almost like he's trying to get fired so he can go to another team or something.

Well done. For all the emphasis on the players we've missed, the signings have been every bit as bizarre. Soliai has value in certain situations but he's hardly the ideal lineman in an increasingly pass happy league. I'm not a believer in guys who don't wake up until the middle of their careers. Parcells had a famous comment along those lines. The other three guys you summarized, I don't think our team would be any different if you removed them. I'd certainly prefer to free up the cash.

PALMA made a great point that every Ireland move is reactionary, and designed to fix a problem created by previous blunders. It reminds me of the worst gamblers I know in Las Vegas. They lose on favorites one day so it's all underdogs the next day. Then if all the overs come in that day, they bet nothing but overs the next day. Constantly on tilt, like Jeff Ireland.

BTW, Joey Porter was professional and impressive in that segment, a far cry from the loudmouth we got to know. Obviously he's campaigning for an ongoing role but words and themes like that make a widespread impact. It would take years for Ireland to restore even a neutral reputation, as far as people skills.

As Porter pointed out, Ireland had no reservoir of good will built up when he asked that question to Bryant. It's instantly damning. I remember being so frustrated that posters here didn't seem to grasp the significance of that question and incident, and naturally we had the flock of apologists, including at least one poster who laughably tried to frame the line of questioning in the most favorable light imaginable, including supposed short burst polite articulate responses from Bryant, who is known to ramble every time a question is posed to him.

Wouldn't be surprised.  Bet his contract has some cush **** built into it in case he gets fired.  After all, he did come with Parcells...

I'm not confused by the plan ... just go down the line in order & ask them ... for a date at a cheap joint. "Hey, wanna go mess around at Burger World?"

Our Free Agency is just about to start ... we'll be picking through the Bargain Bin leftovers. Saw it last year & saw it coming again this year ... we'll get a couple older scratch & dent models, mark my words.

To be fair, it's not often that you find a guy as big as Soliai with his speed and athleticism. I think he could be an absolute terror in a 4-3 rushing the passer. Richard Marshall could be a great move provided he is playing FS as well. I completely agree with the vast majority of your post, though.
