Darlington: Dolphins will take time with GM hire, might not be this week

It also boggles my mind how anybody can say Mangini is a good candidate let alone a brilliant mind.

The only advantage to Mangini is he knows how to get under Belichick's skin.

I’m told Ray Farmer, for instance, was delightfully surprised by the situation in Miami. He really liked everyone, including Aponte/Philbin.

Decent talent evaluator that gets along w/ the structure in place. Whats the hold up?

Your last point is the point I am making. It really is going to take you two plus weeks to figure this out if he is the guy or not? OR is there something they are waiting on?

I think the holdup is that the team is trying to do better than decent. Which means that maybe Ross gets it for once.

I think he wants to get an interview with the guy from Seattle. Maybe Nick Caserio?

If they take until the end of next week that would be just fine with me. This is crutial to the future of the Dolphins so it's imperative that they get it right! Bring in the exact right guy for this exact situation where a Coach is already on board. I don't mind waiting for an OC until the new GM is in the fold. This way he has input to make sure the correct hire is accomplished. The new GM has to have a personality and not make self serving decisions. Ireland=no personality and cover your butt decisions like hanging on to loser draft picks. Do I really have to name them? I think we all know who they are! New GM by 1/24 imo. I'm out on a big*** limb, aren't I?

Mangini also turned 2 huge assets the Browns had (5th overall pick and Braylon Edwards) into Kenyon Coleman, Abram Elam, Chansi Stuckey, and Jason Trusnick. Great ****ing eye for talent right there.. And yes, he's done a great job in a stacked FO with a stacked team that was put together by McGloughlan, Baalke, and Gamble.

Well, it wasn’t such an assumption last week when everyone acted like the job is radioactive. @PhilippeEde: Of course he's going to say that

Joe Haden
T.J. Ward
Alex Mack (who everyone wants around here)

The Jets best players STILL are from Mangini's years. The Braylon Edward's deal was a fantastic deal for the Browns. He was a bum and needed to get bounced.

ehhh please dont send the same scouts to the senior bowl...

Doesn't matter. Most of the scouting has already been completed. Everything I've ever read indicates that every team's draft board is already set before the Combine, which is only like a month away. At this point it comes down to factoring in the computer numbers, monitoring injuries, getting more face time with the prospects, going to workouts (to get a sense of a prospect's work ethic more than anythign else) and figuring out what the other teams are going to do.

The new offensive coordinator and GM are going to factor in their philosophies into this, but the area scouts were never going to replaced by a new GM.

Question:

1. Does Steve Ross like and respect Eric Mangini? …Yes
2. Does Dawn Aponte have a professional relationship with Eric Mangini? …Yes
3. Can the team argue that Mangini has prior experience…more than the other candidates? ….Yes

To totally dismiss in this process is simply premature.

More than Decastro, Gamble, and Mcloughlin? You seem to forget he was the HC of those stinking Jets. What happened there?
His association with the 49'ers is only benefiting him, not the 49'er football team. They were doing very well before he arrived there.
You are putting too much into Dawn Aponte prior relationship with Mangina. It is not a factor in this search. If anything, they will probably avoid him just to eliminate the idea that this was Aponte's plan all along. Ross will let this play out without comment...as he should.
There are currently better GM candidates available than Mangina, but you are entitled to your opinion.
It will certainly be interesting to see how it plays out.
As for myself, I will be happy with whomever they choose. I am just excited that Ireland is gone and someone else can make the draft and FA decisions.

BTW, if Eric Mangini was such a bum like people say he is here, why would the best run NFL franchise ask him to their staff?

Plus, do you think he picked up anything from his different NFL experiences?

As I said before, my one complaint from the last coaching search is we ***** footed around with Fisher which wasted something like 2 weeks. Sometimes it is best to overturn a few stones. Who would have thought that us stealing Parcells from under the FAlcons noses would result in Blank hiring an unknown from New England named Thomas Dimitroff then hiring a little known DC from the Jaguars as the head coach would turn them into a fairly consistent winning team? (Sucked this year but Mike Smith is still the only coach in Atlanta history to make the playoff in consecutive years)

Personally I think Farmer would be a fine hire but it's worth looking at all options.

Actually going back to the Falcons, Ross's early tenure as owner reminds me a lot of Arthur Blank's first few years owning the Falcons. He was a star chaser both with coaches and players, and things didn't start clicking until he missed out on Parcells.

congrats 2 of those players the Browns drafted were drafted after Mangini had his GM power stripped of him and MIke Holmgren was in charge. And the Braylon deal was terrible. Sure he needed to be bounced, but they got scrubs for him.

Yeah, let's wait until the good candidates go somewhere else and we just get stuck with a Plan C.

RC: worried Miami's top choices will get annoyed with the delay and tell us to GF ourselves.
