Darlington: Dolphins will take time with GM hire, might not be this week

Shrine game is tis weekend, Senior bowl follows, then Combine, and you think the scouting is completed?

I said it was mostly completed, because it is. I don't think you have a proper appreciation for the amount of work that goes on during the season. All Star games are interesting, in some cases -- especially for the small school guys -- they're instructive. But it's a gigantic, year round job, going back to the Spring practices and Spring games. The three weeks you're talking about are small by comparison.

Much like your prediction of Billick coming to Miami, Mangini to Miami is not happening Hayden. Give up the obsession.

Doesn't matter. Most of the scouting has already been completed. Everything I've ever read indicates that every team's draft board is already set before the Combine, which is only like a month away. At this point it comes down to factoring in the computer numbers, monitoring injuries, getting more face time with the prospects, going to workouts (to get a sense of a prospect's work ethic more than anythign else) and figuring out what the other teams are going to do.

The new offensive coordinator and GM are going to factor in their philosophies into this, but the area scouts were never going to replaced by a new GM.

whatever you have heard that is not true...the boards are there but there is guys going up and down etc all throughout that process...lane johnson wasn't a top 5 pick last year til he took the senior bowl week and combine by storm and shredded it...that and other position player guys highly rated going in underwhelmed and dropped...

that last part is probably true unfortunately...the scouts if they are relieved of duties would be at a later time...lucky us

Yeah, let's wait until the good candidates go somewhere else and we just get stuck with a Plan C.

RC: worried Miami's top choices will get annoyed with the delay and tell us to GF ourselves.

Why would you assume they'd wait until they got their last resort option? If that was a true scenario, wouldn't they have already hired someone?

There's only 2 teams looking for a GM this year, Phins and Bucs. There's plenty of options. I don't know why some of you are worried waiting this long to get it right this time. If one option goes to the Bucs then there's about 3-4 other options out there.

Maybe that is why we've drafted so poorly, they get their scouting done by Dec 31.

I NEVER predicted Brian Billick. I WANTED Brian Billick, first, for the HC job.

Actually the lack of demand and the abundance of supply works in our favor. Only 2 or 3 teams are looking for GMs. But there is plenty of young and hungry talent. Dolphins play it right.

It is not an obsession. I think he would do a great job. However, I am making a prediction of why Darlington mentioning that it might take another week or more? Why? Are they really going to interview that many candidates? Are they that indecisive? Or do they want to hook up with a guy that is currently in the playoffs? My answer is the latter. That is it.

Remember…some of these candidates are very happy where they are working. They do not have to leave.

I almost hope they pick a candidate you don't like. Your whining for the next years would be great.

That simply isn't accurate. The boards are set and do not move all that much. We in the public get the impression that players are moving up and down, but that impression is created from the fact that the media sets their own boards and then adjusts them as they learn more from the teams. I remember back when Daniel Jeremiah had a podcast that I listened to and he talked about this in detail. This whole idea that a guy walks into the Senior Bowl as a low first rounder and comes out a top 5 pick is a myth.

Now, what can happen is a guy gets dinged for running really slow. But the truth is that the scouts have 40 times on most of these guys well before the Combine. They run every year in the Spring and take the Wonderlic, and then scouts use that as a baseline to check everything else against. Scouts will then often go to their campus before the Combine and have them run (and jump, and all of that). The Combine itself is just a good way to standardize the numbers on the same field.

All of the teams operate like this.

BTW, if Eric Mangini was such a bum like people say he is here, why would the best run NFL franchise ask him to their staff?

Plus, do you think he picked up anything from his different NFL experiences?

Nick Saban just hired Lane Kiffin as his offensive coordinator. Doesn't mean I'd want Lane Kiffin to be our new head coach.

Likewise, Jim Harbaugh hired Eric Mangini to be a CONSULTANT. Doesn't mean I want Eric Mangini to be our new effing General Manager.

The top candidates are going NOWHERE. There are two GM openings available right now, and one of them is a "GM-Lite" with no real power.

ok well you believe what you want...the boards are not set til after the combine and post season all star games...they use those as confirmation of what they see etc or to go back and do more homework but the boards not set completely til just before the draft...

let daniel jeremiah tell you he had lane johnson a top 5 pick value the entire way...and he's full of it...i know he really liked the kid but he never said anything that high til after the senior bowl week and combine...in fact he was late 1st rounder going into the postseason process on most teams boards...

after the combine it was obvious with the underwhelming performances of some of the dline top guys for instance that the otackles had the best showings across the board and would go top 5...
