Do we need to be worried about Shelley Smith?

What has seemed ridiculous to me is those who have watched him play and thinks he has what it takes to upgrade our OL. The abuse he took from Starks was not Shelly being rusty, it is Shelly being Shelly. He just doesn't have the skill set to ever be a solid pass protector. Might be a good option on the GL as an extra TE, but not a starter at OG on a decent OL.

No ridiculous is not watching him at all...reading a report he can't block in shorts (which is really not advantage OL) and then acting like you've come to some concrete opinion you'll just flip on if he plays any good. Can you elaborate on the skillset he's lacking from what you've watched? Oh ya...even what you read, I'd love to know what exactly he is missing.

Yeah, no one on the OL knows what they are doing yet, and facing Starks and Wake is not gonna make things any easier.

Dont worry a guy that wasn't good enough to be a starter on a fairly bad line will make our bad line better lol

I would be alarmed if he handled Starks. Starks should handle him 95% of the time because Smith is just another guy with potential.
Put him on a dominating oline and he would be fine while obscured by the great players around him.
Put him on a weak oline and he cannot elevate the performance.
This oline has only 2 legit players with Albert and Pouncey. James and Turner might be the answer, but nothing has been proven.

That's where you're wrong, KTOWNFINFAN knows...he read an article, looked at some PFF #'s and then crafted a strongly based opinion...

I use and enjoy PFF a lot. However, cannot post links, as they are pay per view. They grade and rank players overall but, then they do the same on pass, run, etc, and then they do the same on game by game.

VD is a VG example. They had him top 5, I think, at CB but most of that rank was based on one game, and not the season.

Shelly did not play well in pass blocking but, was average on many plays, and bad on a number of others. The bad overcame the average because there was not enough playing time for one to offset the other. Don't get me wrong, he did strugge in pass protect. No idea if he will get better or worse with additional playing time. That's up to Benton, who I am sure was consulted before the signing.

We've talked about this a billion times SB...I have PFF too and it serves a purpose for sure, otherwise I wouldn't pay for it. But as I've said it shows you a result, not the formula that lead to it. I'd just like to hear from people who have such deeply rooted opinions on the guy as to why he isn't going to offer anything when they really haven't done enough research on their own to draw an opinion.. I don't know if Shelley will work out, if he flops I think it's a result of something mental. He entirely has the athletic ability to protect...and he has everything I could ask for in the run game. He cleans up some technique, picks up the new playbook...I see a guy who's as likely as any to be one of our starting guards. It's ****ing laughable that people are freaking out during OTA's :rotfl1:

How many posters here do you think have watched Shelly play for the Rams on his 200 snaps? Add in Mitchell for a very bad Houston team, and Delmas, who was not injured last year and played almost every snap?

I'm guessing maybe 5. It's kinda funny that, in this day and age of info at light speed, many do not bother to look up a bit of info before posting. No idea why.

And it was not " a Billion" just 900,000 and counting. lol

5 is rich...like it's totally fine if you want to draw an opinion from certain sources, some people just don't have the time. Just people can't be so damn emphatic on something that has been entirely shaped by someone else's opinion...it's not your opinion, you've just taken a handful of random opinions and claimed they're your own. What's the point in being a sports fan if you can't objectively make your own opinion? Where's the fun in that haha.

Let's qualify that. You have opinions from Phins coaches, and many experts who have plyed, coached, and were GM's in the NFL. Then there are reporters and many a site, who know less than a number of posters here. Take Jaws for an example. He watches QB to an extreme on tape, and I will take his breakdown over my own. It does not mean I do not watch and have my own opinion but, I do not have the knowledge or have not broken down a QB on lots of film. So, I would defer to him on his opinion over my own.

Of course it's still very early but it seems like Shelley has been getting torched so far. Does anyone have any positive evidence of solid play from him so far? Are we gonna regret letting big Paul go?

I'm trying to piece together how your questions of Shelley Smith and Big Paul go together; was Paul going to switch over to guard?

even if he doesnt win the starting job Shelly Smith was signed for pennies really

Don't know but, it just takes one.

I wonder if it was the same PFF guy who ranked Robert Quinn the 2nd best player in the entire NFL, or the guy who had Gerald McCoy as the 4th best player in the entire NFL.
