Does Jason Taylor deserve to be in the HOF?

Does Jason Taylor deserve to be in the Hall of Fame?

I think Jason Taylor was a great player/teammate/Dolphin.

But he was not one of the best DE's to have ever played the game and that is what the recognition and standard of the HOF is supposed to stand for - the best of the best, not just the best.

Unfortunately I think the criteria that's being used nowadays isn't best all time, rather best of their generation. So even if the best DEs to play now can't hold a candle to the ones in the past, they'll eventually get in if they accumulate enough stats and accolades, a la Jason Taylor.

Of course this also means someone like Rivers will get in based solely on accumulating stats in a pass-happy offensive era. There's just no argument to be made anymore that would keep him out. He's got plenty of stats and not a ton of playoff success, but that's still more than Taylor has and he got in first-ballot.

Voted yes but I'm surprised he got in. As much as the hall is about individual achievement I thought Jason might get hurt by not winning anything.

was he even the best of his era?

i voted no simply because his best year came on a 6-10 team, he never made a play in a postseason game that helped us win, he never made a play in a game that decided whether we would reach the postseason or not (except the raiders game of 2002, after which we lost the next 2 games and missed the playoffs).

yes he racked up a lot of amazing stats and defensive tds, but i do not see or remember jt as iconic.

i guess i have a higher standard for the hof. he is deserving based on how he behaved and how he cared deeply about the game and how he put it all on the line. i am not taking that away from him at all.

i just am remembering back to the countless defensive breakdowns in the late 90s and early 00s in december games or playoffs where we needed a big sack or turnover, and i dont remember him ever delivering like a hall of fame player ought to.

i decided to dig a little deeper and see if my thoughts were justified. i am looking at the last 3 games of the year and playoffs for his career. i think it says a lot that he has 0 postseason sacks. he did not participate in the 1998 playoffs due to injury.

any other missing rows are games he did not play in due to injury.

the bold / italic lines are games that he had a big play in AND led to a victory while playoffs were still in play. example the '03 game against the jets doesnt count because the dolphins were eliminated going in.

hope this sheds a little light on what i meant.

I just don't get some people on this forum saying Jason Taylor isnt a HOF.

Is JT one of the top 2 or 3 D-Ends ever in the history of this game ... Obviously not. Strong cases can be made for Reggie White, Bruce Smith, and Deacon Jones off the top of my head. But was JT one of the ABSOLUTE BEST at his position during his time in football? Did he play at an ELITE level for an extended period of time? Did teams have to figure out a way to game plan for him or contain him or stop him? The answer to all those questions is yes. Jason did all those things ... he busted his butt during a lot of down years for this team. I was upset he went to the Jets, but you know what ... he came back and retired a Phin. It was the 2nd time he back to play for us after being forced to leave at the end of 07 and 09. The fact that he came back twice to play for us shows all the loyalty, love, and respect he has for the franchise and us Phin fans.

You cant put the lack of playoff success squarely on his shoulders ... hell, some of the bad years we had, would have been MUCH WORSE without JT playing for us. Case and point is 2006 ... we finished 6-10 that year, but a good argument can be made we would have been 3-13 or 4-12 without JT. His play for us that year, won us AT LEAST 2 games alone for us that year. We would have finished much worse than we did during some of those down years if not for JT.

JT wasn't a one-dimensional DE either ... he was more than just a pass-rusher. He was great against the run, excellent in pass-coverage, and a turnover machine. He has 8 INTS in his career for a D-Linemen for god sakes (yes I know at times he lined up as LB as well), with 3 returned for TDs! You now how many D-Linemen would love to have those kind of numbers? JT has 9 career defensive TDs ... thats more than Reggie White (3), Michael Strahan (2), Bruce Smith (1), Howie Long (0), Lee Roy Selmon (0), Carl Eller (0), and Jack Youngblood (0) - all DEs in the HOF - COMBINED!!!

Im not going to go through the rest of JTs resume ... its speaks for itself. Dolphin fans should be ELATED that hes in the Hall ... We shouldn't even have to ask if JT deserves it or not. Was it a bit surprising he got in his 1st year, I surely was surprised ... maybe they also looked at what he has done off the field and the contributions he has made to South Florida over the years. The Walter Peyton Man of the Year award I bet helped with his induction as well. That's an important award to win as well if you want to get in the Hall. Jason Taylor absolute deserves it no questions asks ... and the fact that there are detractors out there - some of them, Dolphins fans saying it - is just crazy.

I don't know about anyone on this site ... but I'm already making plans for a trip to Ohio on August 5th. I can't wait.

I agree with the concept but he was 7th all time in sacks..?? Not bad.

The 9 defensive TDs, most all time for a defensive lineman, are what I think puts him in that first ballot category. That is huge
