Dolphins are finalizing a deal with former Jets S Ashtyn Davis.

That's because everyone purposefully was evasive about it. Something about his shoulder... Harbaugh didn't want him to tell anyone... Samuel said it's a "lifelong" injury...

Lifelong? Like he's had it all his life, or it's new, and he'll never recover?
Seems shady as hell. If we sign him you know it'll be a chronic issue and start bothering him asap

That’s was a fast end to that debate lol
I wasn't debating anything. I was merely pointing out flaws in the X? Tweet? WTF do we call it now? Someone else mentioned that Davis has more picks, but he gives up a lot of TDs, because he's a risk taker. I didn't even know Ashtyn existed before the draft, but when I saw he was a home town boy, I was disappointed he went to the Jests. Then I didn't hear anything about him until he picked off future HOFer Huntley twice last year.

Now that he's a Dolphin, compounded by the fact he's from my home town, I hope he's not only going to thrive from here on out, but I hope he's the second (?) safety to be a SB MVP.

I actually didn’t mean it was a debate between you and Clean just the numbers

It’s somewhat pathetic how many FH brothers live to **** on anything and everything the team does. Thus far, our moves have been solid. And we’re in the 2nd day of Free Agency. lol.
It is about balance. I am far more sunny on most things Dolphins. But I have had enough of the Grier plan. Hated the hire at the time, said okay we will see. Gase was the first HC fail, people said well Tannabum wanted that, me okay one more chance at HC. Hired Flores, well then it was Flores was just a bad person or whatever. This is absolutely were Grier should have been shown the door. Nope let him hire another HC. He is just a horrible GM. We are an old team, bloated contracts on vets, very little young guys to take over. Now we are again trying to dig out of a hole created by Grier with bargin deals on injury prone players. We are stuck in purgatory, old, injury prone, bad cap and a middling team and that is were Grier will keeps us.

Like I keep saying. Answer a few questions.
1.) Find me a current GM that has been allowed to fire 2 HCs with zero playoff wins?

2.) Find me a GM in the NFL with 10 years on the job without a playoff win?

3. Find me a GM that was hired in the first place while working for the same organization (yep your Miami Dolphins) for 10 years with out a playoff win?

He doesn't know what a winning culture is and has never been able to create one. I for one don't trust crap with him at all any more. 20 years of failure is enough.

He described it himself as “reoccurring lifelong stinger symptoms” that have bothered him at other points in life.

So it's lifelong as in it's been a lifelong problem so far? Did he let that be known before he was drafted? If not, he's a POS for hiding it.

Look at his yards per target and passer rating in his coverage over the last three seasons. Granted his first two seasons he struggled. Now, three in a row he's been very good.
You do know context matters right. Guy has been a bench player for the Jets, he is playing garbage minutes after the Jets are down. Not to hard to not give up big plays when 95% of the passes you face are dump downs to keep the clock running.

Look I would love for him to be great, but he is a guy that lost his job on one of the crap teams in the NFL. Odds are not great.

I don't discount your point.

There is value in having an elite Safety but yeah...use caution
Elite safeties are all well and good, but the UFA safeties who just had big paydays, were originally drafted in the 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds. You can find good enough safeties without using 1st Rounders on them.
The Eagles starting safeties in 2024 were originally a 4th rounder, CJ Gardner-Johnson, and a UDFA, Reed Blankenship. The KC safeties were 2nd and 3rd rounders. Bryan Cook, and Justin Reid.
Buffalo's safeties were 6th, 2nd, and UDFA. Damar Hamlin, Taylor Rapp, and Cam Lewis.
Washington's safeties were both 2nd Rounders, Quan Martin, and Jeremy Chinn.

Well, just go ahead and think the worst, and formulate any scenarios you can to defend it. I'm sure you investigated him and found out that 95% of the passes thrown in his coverage were dump downs. ;)
He hasn't always been only a bench player either for that matter. A part-time starter would better describe him. It's not like he only played defense late in blowout losses.

Even though the Jets weren't overall good teams, it seems the defenses were still good enough to win more if the offense had done their share.
They ranked 20th, 12th, and 4th in the last three seasons.

I'm sure you checked who the starting safeties were that he was stuck behind and concluded they weren't any good and if Davis was, he should have beaten them out. ;)

I honestly don't know how well Davis will perform for us. I liked him at Cal and was hoping we'd draft him in 2020.
The Jets drafted him two picks before we picked Brandon Jones. Of course, we may well have still taken Jones even if Davis was on the board.
I figure the pro scouts employed by the Dolphins, (and all the other teams), watch tons of tape on all these guys and are able to extrapolate the individual players' strengths and weaknesses irrespective of the quality of the players around them. So, until we see how he performs for the Dolphins, I prefer to see the glass as half full.
Life is too short to dwell on constant negativity. YMMV.

I don't think the worst. I am calculated in my thinking. Usually more then glass full on most things Dolphins. Just done trusting Grier, 20 years of fail.

I like some signing today. But overall it is just another Grier lead crap show. And it isn't just the individual signings this year, but is the cumulative crap show that Grier has created. Ia hate loosing and in my heart I will cheer for a win every weak no matter what, but at thus point there is this thing in the back of my mind saying maybe a **** show is best to get rid of our bozo GM.

I still call it Twitter and the posts are Tweets. It pisses off Musk if people still call it Twitter, so I want to do my small part. :)
Here's an interesting scouting report on Davis from before that draft.
2020 Guide: What Ourlads' Scouting Services said about ASHTYN DAVIS: California, 6007 202 4.50. Two-year starter, Santa Cruz, CA. Scholarship athlete in track who walked on in football. Primarily an offensive player in high school, he is somewhat of a late bloomer. An outstanding athlete who is developing into an elite safety. Earned second-team All-Pac 12 honors as a senior. Experience in a variety of coverages and has lined up at corner, nickel, in the box, along with one and two high safety. Fluid initial movements with easy backpedal combined with smooth transitions. Quick reacting once he diagnoses key. Tracks well moving downhill and can deliver a hit. Has a burst to close on a ball carrier. Physical attacking blocks and working to the ball. Has outstanding range coming from one high to make plays in run support. Can chase all over the field and is consistently around the ball. Solid zone defender with range and angles to the ball. Has range to get over the top as a high safety. Can open up and drive to the deep outside. Flashes ball skills with extension to get to the catch point. Normally sees threats and the quarterback and recovers if out of position. Sudden break on the ball when he sees it. Has shown matchup skill in the slot. Can have tunnel vision and occasionally be late reacting to route combinations. Will miss a tackle at times by being overly aggressive and not gathering on the tackle. Outstanding special teams player who has demonstrated return skill along with kick coverage. He still has some development but his upside and versatility should make him at least a second day pick. 2019 stats: 57 T, 1 TFL, 4 PBU, 2 FF, 2 INT. Position drills only-his choice. Second/third round. (A-30 1/2, H-9 3/8, VJ-DNP, SS-DNP).
