We all know that Starks and Soliai are FA's and looking for big money. What I did not realize until now is that Odrick is a FA after this year, and will also be looking for big money.

Over the last 3 years we have paid Srarks $8.5M (tag), $5M and $4.9M on the last two years of his contract. Soliai was $6M, $6M, and $12M (tag). That's a hell of a lot of money to tie up on DT's. Odrick had a 5 year deal for $13M total and gets a salary of $765K this year.

I have to go DT in the first round. Scouts, Inc have Nix at #17 with a 91 grade, Hageman at #20 with a 90 grade, and Donald at #25 with an 89 grade. One or more will be there.

To compare, Ebron is #22 with a 90 grade, and Martin is #19 with a 91 grade. If you go by Scouts, BPA does not come into the picture, we have Clay and Sims, and FA looks to be deep and good at OG.

DT's are very important, and we need to have 3, and make decisions on the 3 we have not breaking the bank.

I have no problem with taking a DT in the first few rounds if he fits and is the best player available to us. We definitely need to address the long term need at DT this year or next.

We have 1 starting offensive lineman on the team and defensive tackle is the must have position in the first round? :ponder:

Just sign one of those guys back, sign a cheap vet free agent, take a DT in the 2nd-5th round and we're fine. Great value is there after the first with guys like Will Sutton, Aaron Donald, Anthony Johnson, Daquan Jones, Calvin Barnett etc etc.

Imo, either Lewan or Martin should be your picks in the 1st, if we're smart... Both can plug a hole day one.

There are some nice DT's also available in FA.

Which could help drive the price down on one of ours. Supply and demand. I'd love to get either one back and draft a guy 3rd or 4th round to develop and spell them.

Unless we get about 3 O-linemen in free agency wich I doubt we will, I'd have a problem going DT at 19 unless that player is just so much better than anyone else on he board at that point. Of course I'm counting to us bringing back either Starks or Soliai. O-line is the number 1 priority tho I do hope we get a couple of free agents for that unit.

Ozzy rules!!

Sign Big Paul, kick Odrick inside full time and let Starks walk. Not that big of a deal, really.

I think a lot will depend on FA, so we may end up at a place where drafting a Big Ugly D guy makes the most sense. Right now though I'm leaning toward a playmaker. The right TE, WR or even ball hawing Safety.

If this general manager doesn't address pass protection and the running game, he won't be around when what you are describing plays out. Expect the majority of resources to be spend on those two areas. If they are made even average then Miami wins eleven to twelve games. If they are good the sky's the limit.

I mentioned it to you in another thread. I could care less if the re-sign Starks or Soliai. Starks wants big money and Soliai is a two down DT that would hold more value to a 3-4 team. I like Odrick, and the team seems to like Francis. Bring in a second tier vet and draft a DT in round one or two.

Hickey said he drafts based off BPA and at 19 there is a good chance that the BPA could be a DT. I don't think Nix will be there at 19, but Jernigan, Hageman, and Donlad all could be.

I'm telling you sign Corey Peters to a 2 year prove it deal. I compare him to Starks. Plus it would be sweet to steal two falcons with Achilles injuries and make them starters here

How do you evaluate the comparative performance of Starks vs Soliai over the past year? Have one or both deteriorated?
Intuitively, it is hard to find big monster DTs who stuff the run (and Soliai has been a very good contributor over many years - not a bad 4th round draft pick in the Cam Cameron era).
They are both expensive and we probably can't afford both. Both are 30 years old and if we're honest, it's more important to wrap up Odrick in the longer term. This is Hickey's immediate dilemma and it will be interesting to see how he addresses it. It could actually be fiscally prudent to let them both walk if they don't accept a significant reduction in salary.

I thought Soliai is a couple years younger?

Although players like Soliai are more fewer and far between, Starks is literally one of the best DT's at his position and conversly, Soliai is NOT Vince Wilfork level. All other things equal, I would personally prefer Starks as he would be used more (more snaps) and more effectively for our defense.

With that said, we'll most likely re-sign Soliai and let Starks walk.
