Dolphins Big Problem at DT

Never said 'great'. Never.

I said Soliai allows for multiple fronts. And in the East, he is a commodity you keep.

If Coyle played multiple fronts I would agree, but he sticks to the 4-3 and worse yet he stunts the DT's a crazy amount of times. Soliai is not athletic enough to be effective when running stunts. Let him straight man on man rush and tie up two blockers I am all for keeping him, but if he's not going to be used the way he should be why bother?

Coyle sucks as a defensive coordinator, he should stick to being a secondary coach, that's what he's good at. Coyle should of been fired as well. I'm sorry but the whole coaching staff should of been fired.

No, they are both 30 - born just 16 days apart. I still think that it's interesting to try to work out who has the most gas left in the tank.

Starks has been in the league three years longer, and has played significant snaps every year. I do not believe he is a fan of the current coaching staff either. :)

Soliai barely played early on in his career. I think he has more tread on the tire, will likely be cheaper, and he wants to stay in Miami. He also played hurt last year, which could partially explain any drop in performance.

they weren't tackling anything against the jets and bills, No big decision here, Soliai pushes the pocket so I would think that he's a little bit more valuable right now

The team definitely needs to get younger at the position even if they are able to sign Starks and Soliai. I think one of those guys goes and Miami draft a DT fairly high maybe even first round depending on who is available at 19.

FWIW, I was listening to Kiper today who said, as far as positional depth in this year's draft, that you can get a VG RB in the 3rd and 4th rounds, and the OT was also very deep. As far as the worst, he saod the DL, and especially DT.

For me, IF I can get a LT in the first that's what I'm doing. IF a guy like Matthews drops some, I have to consider trading up as there is great value in doing so by saving a ton of money. Very doubtful. From what I have read, Lewan is not a VG fit, and likely will not be there either.

That brings us to Martin, who projects out as a LG. That's not great value in the first round from a money/cap standpoint.

Back to DT. Starks had his best year but, is 30 and wants big money. Soliai is 30, and only plays half the snaps. We need 3, and if one of the other 2 goes down Soliai will not be able to absorb the additional snaps. Odrick has played well, and is chep for one more year. AJ Francis was a practice squad project we got back, and may fit in as #4.

After looking closely at all options, I let Stars and Soliai go, sign a younger FA in the $5M avg range, take one in the first, and looking at extending Odrick. I'm also looking for the FA and or the pick to be able to play some NT IF Coyle decides to change things up some to a 3-4.

I want a DT and an OT in the fist two picks, and right now the DT appears to be the better first choice.

I mentioned it to you in another thread. I could care less if the re-sign Starks or Soliai. Starks wants big money and Soliai is a two down DT that would hold more value to a 3-4 team. I like Odrick, and the team seems to like Francis. Bring in a second tier vet and draft a DT in round one or two.

Hickey said he drafts based off BPA and at 19 there is a good chance that the BPA could be a DT. I don't think Nix will be there at 19, but Jernigan, Hageman, and Donlad all could be.

What does BPA really mean? Is it a guy who is a point ahead in the grades by the team? Should position, cap cost, or need not matter if players are close?

Here are my thoughts. We have key FA's from our own team we need to sign plus attempt a run at an FA OL or two from other teams. This is how I would spend my FA money. Our own key FA's IMO are Grimes, Carroll, and Clemons. I would attempt to restructure Wallace and Wheeler so they can get their money while giving the team some more room. Concerning Soliai and Starks I know I am in the minority with my opinion about them but I would let both walk unless one signed very reasonably. I would utilize Shelby and Francis along side of Odrick. Both are capable DT's and are young and inexpensive. Then either sign a FA DT for little money, perhaps on a one year deal, or ... draft a DT no sooner than round 3. The only downside to picking a DT after round 1 is that this draft class of DT's are not deep and to get a stud we would have to pick one in the first round. The money I save by letting Soliai and Starks walk I would use to accomplish my FA goals I listed at the beginning.

I was with ya for a while there but, Shelby is a DE and AJ a practice squad guy, and the only VG DT prospects will be gone by the 2nd round or before.

That depends on the person pulling the trigger. Hickey says he goes BPA. You and I have had this discussion for years and you know my take. I like BPA at a position of need, but I am not going to draft a LT in mid-round one if I have given him a mid-second or later round grade either. That's where Ireland got in trouble. He used the BPA at a position of need, but didn't fall off that if a player had a later round grade than where he was currently picking.

For example, if I am sitting at 19 and I know I need a OT and according to my board the top OT available is Antonio Richardson who I have given say a round 2 grade. I would look at my big board and see who my top three BPA (no matter the position) and if one of them filled a need although it's a lower priority on my wish list I would either take that player or look to trade back.

Coming around to my way of thinking finally huh? lol

Yeah Odrick being a FA after this year changes things a lot but, was still looking to sign Joseph even before that. I'm still not with ya on Ebron or Martin as first rounders "this year' for this team.

IF a Matthews drops out of the top ten, would you trade up for him? How much would you give?

If he dropped past Ten at #11 I would start thinking about it and at what number would I target? I probably wouldn't move above #15 and wouldn't give any more than a mid round pick to do it. While I like Matthews, I don't love him. I think he is a very good run blocker and on pass blocking he has sound technique but not sure he is athletic enough to handle speed rushers in the NFL on a team that wants to be more finesse than power.

There are four tackles I really like in this draft and two of them will probably be transitioned to guard. For tackles I like Antonio Richardson and James Hurst. I also like Martin and Joel Bitonio, but think both of them will end up playing guard
