Dolphins coaches asked Incognito to toughen up Martin, sources say

i don't see how asking a player to toughen up another guy that needs it is over the top...i'm sure they didn't tell cog to use racial slurs...but i bet they told him to get in is ass and light a fire

nothing wrong with that either...i guarantee you egnew heard the same kind of message after last season...difference is he responded the right way and at least validates a spot on the 53 right now...

i'm sure the staff would think that martin would show some back bone and maybe bite back but instead he saves stuff for 6 months and goes awaol in the middle of a game week...he jobbed his teammates the fan base and the front office

he shouldn't be paid a dime
Asking Incognito to "toughen up" Martin is like asking a lumberjack to perform brain surgery. No matter how skilled he is with a chainsaw, it will be messy, there will be casualties, and at the end only one question: "WTF were you thinking??"

well im looking at the positive side of things, yea our franchise has taken a hit, but if thats what it takes to get rid of ireland than so be it. 2-3 from now no one will even care bout this anymore, just like spygate n bountygate, we will move on to better days without ireland. Lets face it, ireland himself has embarrassed this franchise with the dez situation, the sparano backstabbing, n his consistent losing seasons.

Only problem is if everyone is fired who is going to want to come in to be the next GM of this team. Then how difficult a time will that new GM have in finding someone that would want to coach here? If the team loses a high round draft pick or more then that will just make things almost impossible.

I am sure Goodell would love it though because it would make his buddy Kraft very happy to have a team in his division in total disarray while Tommy boy is winding down his career.

At least we have a well-respected owner and a state of the art stadium.

...wow, this franchise is screwed.

How pissed will everyone be if the Fins go on a run and ESPN and CBS and everyone is FORCED to talk about them on the football field

Everyone. Because there are only a limited number of these jobs in the entire world, we have good cap flexibility, all our draft picks(unless they are stripped, but even then it will be a late rounder), and we have some promising players at the most important positions(qb and pass rush).

This myth is one that needs to be blown up.. GM candidates rushed to take the Raiders job. There isnt a franchise in the league that comes close to how awful that situation was. No talent, no cap, draft picks gutted, crap stadium, questionable owner...Yet people still fought over each other to get in that chair.

Some might not want to work under Ross, but the vast majority of the people we have our eyes on will readily accept the job.

Excellent points. I am just hoping that if everyone is gone whoever comes in to replace them is competent. Tired of having to blow everything up every few years. Hopefully who ever comes in does the smart thing and keeps the talent that is already on the team while filing in the remaining holes . No more getting rid of good players because they "don't fit your scheme".

Oh this is classic. I'd love to see the time line. I can't believe nobody mentioned the distinct possibility, that Incognito's ranting voice mails immediately followed the Dolphins' command. That would fully explain why Martin kept them, since they were so over the top and out of the blue.

With a lughead like Incognito I wouldn't be shocked if he left those messages within hours or even minutes of the request, after no thought whatsoever.

Then on Sunday night when the Dolphins are presented with the tape, they piece it together and realize they were the inspiration. Whoops.

If the Dolphins didn't question Martin fully after he left last week, as I guessed yesterday based on the vague nature of Philbin's presser, then it follows that they weren't specific with Incognito in telling him how to deal with Martin. The poor instincts of this regime don't quit.

In a situation like this you can't be specific enough. And even then if the subject is a knucklehead with no finesse, like Incognito, he's almost certain to botch it. I can't count the number of experiences I had in Las Vegas. I got banned from betting golf at Harrah's in 1988. So I tried to use a friend as a messenger. Not the sharpest tool. Somehow he managed not only to make the wrong bet but to blab so much to the sportsbook supervisor that she figured out I was the source of the wager.

What's being overlooked is Philbin came from the Packers organization where hazing is minimal. For a guy that's supposed to be the leader it appears as if he is merely a figurehead.

Those that think Martin is at fault or that this acceptable behavior because it's the NFL are in for a pretty rude awakening. Stupid haircuts, dyed hair and hazing practices will be under a microscope 2014 training camp. You're kidding yourselves if you think the NFL won't squash neanderthal behavior.

I don't foresee Ross firing Philbin in season barring damning evidence of something more specific than coaches told Incognito to toughen Martin up surfacing. Anything short of a deep run in the playoffs I am pretty certain that you'll see a housecleaning come January.

Season is over as of now. I still had hope for the season even after the bad play and the 4 losses, but with this $**t now with the coaches in on it and the negative media surrounding the team that will never end, There is no way the players can just focus on the games, hell i'm sure the coaching staff can't just focus on the games now, they will be wondering if and when they will be fired... wow what a shipwreck....I will be putting my fin gear away can't be seen supporting this team right now ....to embarrassing. I guess like I've been saying for the last 30 years "maybe next year"

Not quite yet, im waiting for the next reveal: where its the fans fault.

Of course it's the fan's fault. If we didn't have so many fair weather fans:

  • The stadium would be full.
  • The team would play with confidence.
  • Clabo wouldn't be terrible.
  • Jonathan Martin wouldn't have had to move to the right side again.
  • Martin wouldn't be depressed.
  • Team cornfed would plow the opposing defenses into submission, opening things up for the passing offense.
  • Better time of possession means the defense would have more time to rest.

The fans prevented another playoff run. Thanks a lot a holes.

I dont believe anything until the NFL says something. After all, Shefter, Mando, and Omar are driving this bus....oh and ESPN.

And this is not about someone dying.

If its against the NFL rules to tell one guy to toughen up another, please show me that rule. Armando?

The funny thing is I mentioned this a couple of days ago on here and several thought I was crazy for even mentioning it. It's not the first time a caoch has asked a player to toughen a player up and it wont be the last. Incognito just went too far.

I cannot believe people are running so far with an Omar Kelly story. Haven't we learned our lesson before?

You can't take jello and turn it into concrete. Martin is soft, and is not cut out to be a NFL starter. Backup at best. When he's in the heat of the game and the phins need for him to dig deep.....he'll quit, Give up, not accustomed to plowing through tough obstacles.

This but I have no doubt Richie took things much farther than what was asked. Although if this is true it may not matter when it comes to keeping our staff in tact. Bet this kind of stuff happens in every organization but what makes it different is Richie went too far with a player that happened to not have the mental toughness to take it.
