Dolphins confident they can find TWO starting guards

Yeah, we have a consistent track record. We consistently find good or at least decent OL in round 1. That is the round where prospects have it all. In addition to the feet and length for which the Dolphins look, these prospects also have good technique and meet the minimum for power.

But outside of the 1st round, prospects do not have it all. When we prioritize feet and length we get guys who are busts because they lack technique or power.

Other teams set a minimum amount of power, and below that they don't draft them. Also, they prioritize technique, because useful technique trumps feet and length. Without it, nothing matters. These guys have been learning the same technique for 8+ years. If they don't have it now, we shouldn't be banking on them learning it.

Huh? Technique is not synonymous with hands, it absolutely includes feet. Without a proper base and getting in the right position a lineman's hands are useless as they end up reaching for or whiffing on their target.

Gase switched up some of our lineman's technique and pass sets just this past year and it helped James improve.

Sign the guy from Cincinnati, draft a solid prospect maybe Round 3, and...

...drumroll please...

DEVELOP THE GUYS WE HAVE like Steen, Urbik and Brenner. Why this team keeps churning OL players I cannot fathom. We have some prospective starters already on this roster that appear to be improving. OL is a wholistic position group and versatility and #s are important.

Brenner is with the Broncos and Urbik is an old vet, his developmental days should be behind him. Steen turns 27 in a few months and has been around for four seasons, I'm not sure he even has much more room for development.

We have no developmental guys. We have cut the 4 of 6 guys we have drafted in the past 5 years, and the other two our our starting at T. Steen is older and undrafted, and Urbik is an old vet. Drafting 1-2 to develop in round 5 this year would be a sound idea, but we can't rely on them to start this season.

Keeping in mind that Tunsil is moving out to LT full time, and I know he filled for BA last year but you need real good steady guard playing beside that young man. Tannihil's long term health depends on it. Also Miami needs that running game to work to sustain drives. (That guard play needs to be good at pass or run.) Good OL's make that possible, and keeping New England's offence off the field will be key in this division. Got to give themselves the best possible chance for success here and it all starts in the middle. That guard talent is more important than some here think. IMHO.

I have to admit after seeing Antonio Brown's new deal and Eric Berry's new deal ... those two contracts have got me thinking a bit about how to build a franchise. Miami has Landry and Jones up for extensions. Does Miami fork over the cash to pay them? Or is it wiser to invest money in the OL and perhaps trade one or both players? I am so torn I love both Landry and Jones but how does Miami pay those guys while already paying Suh ... and expect to build the trenches to protect it's most important piece ... Tannehill? All of sudden the FO has some big decisions to make. I am a firm believer in investing cap space in the OL, DL, and QB. Then if there's space pay one LB and one DB. But no way Miami can pay everybody. No way can Miami pay Landry, Jones, Suh, two new FA top guards, the new TE Thomas, Wake, Alonzo, etc. Big decisions to be made. As the cap raises it will force the FO to set a course that will make or brake Miami's hopes with Gase.

I think you try to trade Jones and sign Landry. I'd love to keep Jones and he is a great player, but he is coming off an injury and the defense still did enough plays to help the team make the playoffs without him. I think if Landry went down it would be a bigger hit for the offense than what happened to D once Jones went down.

I saw another post with a similar thought. It was telling Miami won 10 games while Jones was out most of the season. This shows Miami can win without him. I love Jones though and think he is to the D what Landry is to the O. The key to Miami winning IMO was the OL. I would make that the team's strongest unit and invest my FA money in a great guard and then a second tier guard. When Miami ran the ball even the defense looked better. Solidifying the OL through FA would be my first move followed by signing Landry to his extension.

Obviously there was improvement on other areas to get us to 10 wins. I wouldn't read too much into winning without Jones. This team has lacked play makers for year. Jones is a play maker. Don't get too cute and try to be New England with these trades. You'll end up with nothing to show for it but cap space.

I mentioned it in another thread, but Berry's record-breaking contract is still less than what the Giants spent on Olivier Vernon. Is there anyone who would prefer Vernon to Berry? And if yes, do they watch football?

Yes. Saying "well we got 10 wins without him so whatever" ... is just crazy. he would've improved the team that much more with his presence.

that's like seattle saying we are good without earl Thomas even though like Miami free safety play in the postseason was horrific...in seattles case on defense it was the prime reason they went home...in miamis Rambo was horrid

hurry back reshad jones

we got 10 wins....come on guys, we only got 10 wins because the Browns kicker missed 3 field goals, and many of our wins were by sooooo little. Heck, we could have lost to San Fran too in the final seconds. Basically im saying this team is still far away from being Patriots-Caliber. Jones coming back will help, as will a healthy Pouncey....and now Julius Thomas.

This x100!!!
People get so caught up on positions.. what really matters is the difference made.. no question berry means more.

Also guys dont forget jones played in the win vs pitt.. we won 9 games without him
