The Miami Dolphins are keeping the option worth $9.3M on Ja'Wuan James. He remains with the team. Dolphins have their starting RT.

Where's the extension? Where the hell is the cap relief going to come from? Wake? Pouncey?

I still think he signs an extension.

Which means the Dolphins will have to make some more cuts and restructure some contracts to stay under the cap. Will Pouncey and/or Wake become a cap casualty?

Ja'Wuan had them by the balls. He would’ve been the best free agent right tackle on the market. He would’ve got 9 million a year easy.

With Norwell getting 13 million AAV, the market for James would have been insane.

Seriously, I don't see how any of this works unless there are surprise cuts coming. I'd put Wake and Pouncey in the "surprise" category. Julius Thomas & Timmons don't clear enough (with Landry gone).

I like how all the scrub/mediocre players are getting handsomely paid by Miami but with the above average to good ones, Miami tightens the coin purse.

The good thing is that he has to give us the best he has this year being that he will be an UFA next spring. Still hoping for an extension though.

We can’t make more holes. James would get this on the open market and now we have Davis for G. Line needs one G and it’s set.

Money for the draft probably comes from the post-June 1st cut of Suh. Just a guess.

Actually, not for nothing, but if you add a Guard in free agency or the draft and draft a TE in say round 2, this offense is tons better than the one that started the opener last year.

Hopefully they will continue to negotiate and bring that cap number down. Armando seems to indicate that James is going to play the year without an extension. That would be another brutal decision by this front office.

Sorry but Norwell is an all-pro
while James is no where near an all-pro

Fact is in the past 2 out of the last 3 seasons this has been
    his position

At this point the plan is to see how he plays next season and see if he stays healthy before extending him. They didn't want to create another hole at this point and yes, I believe a big cut is coming down soon

Smart move. Arguably the smartest move they have made so far.

Hammer something out in June when you get the Suh cap relief.

Then that is a reason to NOT sign him long term. If he is injured again this season they can cut ties. If he stays healthy and performs they can work on an extension during the season.

James is a good player. My biggest concern with him is injuries. He's been banged up too much for my liking.

But you go look at the OL market right now and tell me you want to cut him loose?

We are going to pay $9.3M to a guy who's never had a solid season. We saw no dropoff in play last year after he went down. Our OL found its groove without him last year. I'm fine starting the 2018 season with the OL we ended the 2017 season with, and while with and saving $9.3M. I'm not even concerned with injuries, I just don't think James is a very good football player. He's average at best, and I dont care what PFF says.

On a side note, this just shows Tannenbaum is completely undisciplined with his cap strategy. Refusing to overpay for players like Landry and Suh, but willing to overpay for a guy like James....makes absolutely no sense.

Save 4 million total to let one of the best DTs in the game go? Save like 1 million to have Wilson and Amendola instead of Landry? Landry and Suh epitomize toughness and stability, neither miss games.

Over 9 million for a good, not great, but also injury prone RT? Sure why not. He must have game changing culture.

Well, I guess they could have cut him. Gotta count your blessings with this FO. Wouldn't that have been a beautiful trainwreck.

We didn't have him after 8 games last season, which is essentially the same as cutting him loose. We didnt play worse without him imo.

I don't mind one year rentals. If they can make the cap numbers work, one less hole. Now he just needs to stay healthy.
