Dolphins re-sign Pro Bowl Cornerback Brent Grimes

one thing about guaranteed money, is that that figure usually comes from the players agent, and he sort of inflates that number, to make it sound more lucrative to future clients. by inflate, i mean that the figure usually also includes the first years salary, since it's not likely any player will be released during his first year. so, for example, if the guaranteed money is said to be 15 mil, it's probably already including the 1st year, wich could be around 8mil. these are just examples...

Great first step moving forward. Let's put last year in the rear view mirror. Gotta have playmakers on both sides and Grimes was the swagger we needed on D last year.

$16-18 million is where i'm standing on the guaranteed money...could be a slight discount for the home team but i kinda doubt it...

If Aponte keeps her track record this deal will be loaded on the front end and easy to shed after two years with the bulk of the money coming next season.

That would be my guess; Miami will take hits this year and more so next year but will be team friendly after year two. Wallace, Ellerbe, and Wheeler are all team friendly contracts after year two, so if Grimes is a big cap hit in year two there is relief available if needed.

Did you? It's a team friendly deal for what the market set for him.

Wallace, Ellerbe and Wheeler were all very light cap hits the first year and heavy cap hits year 2 through 5. Back loaded deals that have severe cap implications if we cut any of them the next 3 years. What am I missing?

It's literally the exact opposite

From what I see of the deal, I love it! I'm glad Grimes came back. We need this guy. Great news!

It makes sense from an injury perspective as well, you take your lumps up front and don't put the team in cap hell for years to come by a player if he gets injured, that and you gain leverage in the renegotiation aspect because you could throw a signing bonus the players way after 2 or 3 years and restructure at much lower base salary freeing up cap space beyond 2015.

It's literally the exact opposite

It is unless you just look at it from a high level. If all you had to make a judgment was a few numbers you'd think it was backloaded, the key in the contracts and the way Aponte structures them is in the guaranteed money and when it is paid. All of them are team frinedly and front loaded once you dig into them.

They are high cap hits IF on the team because the base salary is high. The bonus is not bad. Where it was front loaded was in the base being guaranteed in the first two years. That's why a Wallace can't be moved as his base is $15m this year and it's guaranteed.
