Satele is signed to start, allowing Garner to be the versatile backup he is. FWIW, in 2012 Samson ranked #33 of 36 centers (playing 25% or more). He was #20 on the run, and #35 on the pass.
Last year, he was #32 of 35. He was #35 on the run, and #19 on the pass. His pass blocking was worse than any interior OL we had, and his run blocking was worse than everyone we had on our OL, even Jerry. The last two guys we signed ranked this low were Columbo and Naanee. As you can tell I do not like the signing.
I thought Cook was a much better option, and would have been average.

#19 is middle of the pact and not terrible especially since he allowed only one sack.
Not saying he is a world beater but our options are extremely limited and like you say they probably want Garner in reserve for all OL positions.

Yeah lets settle for mediocrity. That is what gets us an 8-8- or 7-9 record every season and no playoffs.

Only 1 sack but 8 QB hits, worst of all centers and combined was 4th worst. A number of centers did not give up any sacks but, got beat often.

Maybe I missed the list of Pro Bowl centers available this week, who would you prefer?
Also, if he was the 33rd rated center in the league last year, wouldn't that make him the #1 rated back-up?
WTF was I thinking? OF COURSE we should have 5 pro-bowlers on the line! Silly me... That sh** just grows on trees!
Mediocrity on the LINE hasn't been seen, it's been FAR below that...so for you to say it got us 7-9/8-8 these past 2 seasons is BS at best.

right now we have one good olineman. The rest are big questions. Colledge in practice has been solid but we shall see

which I don't see an average line there esp if Pouncey misses the year. They could be as bad as last year. Anything better than last year is an improvement although some people act like our ****ty line line year was better because of PFF.
Our line is a huge concern to me and I feel like we could have done much better in free agency
I do too. While I didn't mind the Albert signing, we let a LOT of FAs get away that would have made immediate improvements to this line. I'd like to think they tried to sign some of them, but for whatever reason they didn't want to come here, but who knows? This is the only down-tick I have for Hickey so far...otherwise I think he's done great, 2014 will tell.
