First Impressions Of Dolphins' Head Coach Candidates

Excellent OP. Thank you.

I'm not sure what ppl expected. I would say a pretty substantial majority here, myself included, wanted Gase gone.

I realized what that meant. No matter what else happened with the FO, no previously successful coach was coming here. It was a foregone conclusion.

That's why there were a minority of ppl who saw this, and didn't like the prospects.

I think if you wanted Gase, and Tbum gone, you can't really complain too loudly after the fact.

It will be interesting to see if Rizzi doesn’t become HC if he sticks around. He’s been our best coach: No doubt any new coach they bring in would want to keep him. The question is can you swallow you’re pride and step back into the old job?

I got very impressed by Richard, whom I never heard of before. Looks like he has the personality, energy and people skills that could grow into something, but he must be pair with a very good OC for me to be completely on board with him.

Fangio I think is the closest thing to an immediate HC, but his ceiling I think is not as hi as Richard.

I could be ok with Rizzi or Campbell with good coordinators, and them handling everything needed to be right for the specialist to work, like discipline, motivation, accountability, etc. much like a CEO.

I don't think its a given that Rizzi sticks around.

Besides that, what I see happening here, is that's not going to be the new HCs call. Grier will make that call.

Grier has one shot at this. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, for now. He is going to put the staff he wants in place. That's why we are interviewing the guys we are.

If I'm Grier, I'm thinking, I've watched this team flounder for two decades as I worked my way up the ladder, now I'm the big dog. For better or worse, I'm doing this my damn way.

I hope that's the passion he has.
I really hope he succeeds.

the HC doesn't matter as much as the QB. We need that 2020 stud or get a project in 2019. I prefer both.

Wait.... what? There is no greater piece to the puzzle than the HC. I great coach can hide deficiencies in a player but I'm not sure I've ever seen a QB hide an inept coach. Just see the packers this year.

I agree with you on Richards. If you think about the personalities he dealt with on that Seahawks D, more so the guys in the secondary, I think he would be a great fit. Looks like he knows the game and can lead men.

What is Grier’s vision ? He said think of his mentors Parcells, Bellichek, Carroll and Saban. We are going to get bigger & tougher.

Spent most of yesterday recovering from NYE while reading FH trying to get a handle on who I’d like to coach the Phins. I too had a feeling after Hard Knocks Joe wasn’t the guy. I knew for sure when he called TO and the end of the 4 qt when Wake sacked Rogers with the clock winding down and GB had no TO’s. NO JOE. Rogers resets ,throws the TD pass , we lose. I cannot believe Joe lasted 3.25 yrs.

I wanted an experienced coach not another 1st year guy. Ross picked Gase.
Ok he is the Coach of my team, let’s go. I am behind you. I hope he is the next young Shula, as Ross said he was looking for. The 1st year gave me some hope. Wow did the good will I had towards Gase leave quickly after year 2. I grew to hate the bubble screen as our primary offense weapon. Jarvis was fun to watch, him do what he does. This year was fun to go to the games. We did well at home but man on road we sucked royally. Tanner breaking down again was huge. Not having a backup better tan Oz was on Gase. After the Miami Miracle I thought we were going to pull it off. Not 3-0 but 2-1 or 1-2 maybe squeak in again to the playoffs. I am surprised the Ross let him go on Black Monday. It was his hand picked guy and the organization was preaching continuity. I thought Tannenbaum and Burke were gone for sure but Gase survived. Bravo Mr. Ross for cannng Gase.

I saw some of the videos you posted yesterday on another thread. Not all of them though. Had not seen Rizzi nor the NE guy. I like two candidates Munchak and Richard for next coach

If we go for experience, I want Munchak. The guy was a legend as a player. He had his shoot in Tennessee and his teams took on his personality. He just never got the QB. While his record was similar to Gase’s he brings instant credibility. I see him as a leader of men. No doubt he can assemble a good staff.
If we swing for the fences Richard is my guy. He seems like a young Shula to me. Comes from a family of Coach’s. The tape of him on the field during practice is amazing. He comes from the Pete Carol tree ....no doubt Grier knows of him from Carol. He likes big corners. We was a DB coach like Saban. He managed some alpha males for sure with LOB. Gase did not handle that well with our Diva’s Jay & Jarvis...

Which ever way we go I will support them. I love our Dolphins. I like the Owner. Let s get this once proud franchise back to the place it belongs amoung the prominent franchises in the league.

I'm in the belief of you need a top notch GM or a top notch qb or a top notch coach to have continued success. We struck out at GM, no qb on the horizon so that leaves coach. I'm just not seeing a homerun with this list. Continue the hunt.

It is no coincidence most consistently good teams have a top HC and top QB

Valid insights. Again, these are real quick first impressions based on like 10 minutes of interview footage and practice videos. I think you can definitely discern something about the candidates from this, but certainly isn’t a deep dive. Im not seeing how they interact with players one on one, how they run a meeting room, the administrative things they do, etc.

But career coordinators who finally get a HC gig late in their careers make me wary a bit. The ones that come to mind are Zimmer and Ariana. While both solid coaches, they are not what I would consider upper echelon coaches and have had mixed success.

Fangio definitely gives that grandfatherly aura and mentor vibe which I think can be a positive, but will it elevate the team to new heights? I don’t know.

IMO, there are four flavors of successful NFL HCs.

1. The Field General (The hyper motivational commanding types)

2. The Wizard (Make hay based on their innovative game plans)

3. The Teacher (exceptional at developing players and mentoring coaches)

4. The CEO (exceptional organizational and management skills with the ability to develop systems that foster the growth of top notch staff)

Ideally, a coach would have multiple of these flavors to some degree.

Some examples of top flight coaches:

Belichick: Wizard/Teacher/CEO
John Harbaugh: Field General/CEO/Teacher
Tomlin: Field General/CEO
Reid: Wizard/Teacher/CEO
Carrol: Field General/CEO

Looking at Fangio, I see him as Teacher, but does he have any of the others?

To me Kris Richard is the moonshot candidate. I already see at least Field General/Teacher in him... can be develop the CEO skills?

I certainly wouldn’t hate a Fangio hire, but to me his ceiling is much lower than Richard’s overall. But then again, if Richard is incalapable of putting together and fostering a top notch staff he could bust

Looking at the list of upper echelon coaches and their strengths, the one common link between them is that they are all good at team management - the CEO type. The question is, did they come in adept at this aspect of the job, or did they learn it on the job and just found to have a natural inclination toward it. This is why I fee an assistant HC role is a real positive for candidates because it shows they have experience with the team management side of things.

This is really where our past coaches failed most... they might have been good in other areas of the job, but lacked in creating and fostering an organizational structure for success.

Just think of all the embarrassing scandals that plagued the coaching reign of Philbin and Gase for example... they didn’t have a good handle on team management.

This is absolutely crucial for the candidate. It’s hard to tell who on this list would be best in this regard. We know Rizzi does have experience with it considering his role as assistant HC. Munchak developed some of these skills in his first HC gig. Considering how hands on Fangio is as DC, he is probably competent in team management. The question for me is how Richard fits into that. He seems pretty organized to me just based on what I’ve seen from his practices, but there is much more to it than that. I’d roll the dice that he is capable of developing that skill to competent levels.

I’d worry about both Bienemey and Flores in that regard though. Haven’t been exposed to that side of the business enough.

Prefer a defensive coach and Richard would be my first choice. Dallas’ secondary coach and passing game coordinator. I like that he works both sides of the ball. Ifnot Kris the Fangio and Rizzi would be my hope. Want nothing to do with Flores. The BBtree has not produced successful offspring.

i think it is very obvious that Richard and Munchak are the 2 best candidates for the job, with Fangio coming in a close 3rd.

I just think Richard's energy is too much to pass up. He has the potential to be a great coach, and also brings some of the toughness aspects discussed with MM. Don't get me wrong, if we hire Munchak I will be all in for him and be at every game cheering but my personal first impression is that Richard is the guy.

Hopefully we can grab Kris Richard, dudes a beast and he's prime for a head coaching position. He's going to kill all his interviews, hopefully he's looking to build a program his way down here in Miami.
