For all this stupid crap about Philbin not being a motivator

Philbin is a good coach already, after taking a team with so many glaring holes so close to the playoffs. I think last years team was better, and we had more wins and success this year. About the only places we were better this year is we had a deep threat at receiver, and a better CB in grimes. We were worse on the O-Line, RB, and LB. To go through the crap we went through, without the ability to run the ball, compounded by the stupid move at LB......it is amazing we were playing for a shot at the playoffs and beat 3 of the teams that made it. I hope Philbin comes back, and I hope we get a GM that won't hamstring him!

Really? Did you happen to catch his 1st few years in Jacksonville? Anyway, it's good for the Jags that they were able to realize that he was not the right man for the job and move on. It's really paid dividends for that franchise.

Please don't talk about something you have no clue. I am not defending Coughlin but under him they had the most success.
In his first 5 years of Coughlin's tenure the Jags (which were also the first 5 seasons of the Jags) went two times to the AFC Championship game, one time to the divisional playoff game and one time to the WC.

He was kicked out after a 7-9 and a 6-10 season. The Jags have since (2002) reached only twice the playoffs.

If you use Jaxv as a sample for firing Coughlin you should be all for kicking Philbin's ass to the curb.

@67stang - I think we can all agree that if he does come back that he can be the successful winning coach that we all have been waiting on for far too many years.

Let's hope he can prove his doubters wrong.

Here's my feeling summed up on Philbin...

In 2012, the Dolphins started 4-3 and finished up by losing 6 of their last 9 games.

In 2013, the Dolphins started 3-0 and finished up by losing 8 of the last 13 games.

In my opinion NFL players are motivated by leaders among their teammates who believe the coaching staff is good at what they do and puts them in position to win, and who therefore "buy in" to the coaches' system and disseminate that belief in the system to their teammates, along with leadership both emotionally and by example.

This is how the NFL works in my opinion, and this is how coaches with wide-ranging personalities, from Tom Landry to Vince Lombardi, can be highly successful.

And it's also why the main consideration with regard to Joe Philbin and his staff is not whether they're inspirational, "rah rah" types, but whether they have the intelligence to implement a system that puts their players in position to win.

And it's why the next most important consideration for the Miami Dolphins is whether they have leaders among the players who believe in that system and who can disseminate that belief to their teammates, while inspiring them vocally and by example.

None of that matters, however, unless the team has the requisite physical talent to win, and this team is still getting over that hump, starting with the all-important quarterback.

Whats happening to the Jags fanbase is called poetic justice. And with what happened to the Giants this season I bet there is at least one idiot Jags fan saying something like: See guys, I knew Coughlin was overrated and a bad coach...

What are you talking about? Cog is still suspended with pay because the investigation is still going on.

And whos decision was that ? F.O. , he could only be suspended for 4 games then we either had to bring him back or let him go , so instead of letting him come back until the suspention was over they gave him his leave with pay , they could have brought him back till this was settled , thats what i was referring to ,to the quote that i just read .

Here is my sum of that, in the years before that since 2009 we have been below .500. It seems as though there might be a problem elsewhere.......maybe.......possibly?

Ok Mr. GM.

Like changing coaches is what we needed the last 5 times.

New coach equals success. Just like when we got Saban oh wait that didn't work too well. Oh but wait there was that stud offensive coordinator what was his name Cam Cameron.....oh forgot that wasn't very good. But we got parcels and his boy sparano, sorry that wasn't great.

There was that time we replaced Shula because he had just gotten too old to relate to the players (lol, must have been those ever important pre game pep talks) for THE SUPER STAR CANT MISS COACH JIMMY JOHNSON. Oh yeah that was a disaster too.

So now we get rid of a guy that has had two years with a rookie QB in year 1, a transition back to the 4-3, a scandal that was huge, and who hasn't completely fallen on his face for the next great thing out there that will excite the fan base for 5 games until they realize that the coach doesn't conduct pep rally's at the practice facility the day before the games to get the team prepared to play

New coach is taking a step back. Philbin deserves this 3rd season to really show if he can get this team where they want to go

You mean like Sparano? I wouldn't be against Philbin getting another year but you have to blame him for the flatness of the team those last two games. If Philbin gets to stay then I hope he succeeds because I really do want to win. But if Ireland goes it will be interesting to see if Philbin stays.

I have a question for you Hayden, what is our opinion on how we were able to beat the 3 AFC division winners and the Chargers and Pitt?

Probably the same thing that would be said about why we lost to Buffalo (twice), the Jets, and the Bucs. ANY GIVEN SUNDAY FOR AN AVERAGE TEAM...

I actually disagree, I think Philbin did an amazing job motivating players all season.

Your television must have broke down after week 15.

Should we have given Cameron 3 years?
Did Sparano deserve 4 years? Did he deserve even 3 years?

I'm not sure which of the coaches we've had over the last decade or so you'd have like to have seen stay on the job longer, but I can't say there's one on the list that I was sorry to see go. Sometimes coaches fit; sometimes they don't. Sometimes it takes a few years to get a system in place; sometimes giving those years is a waste of time. There's no one rule that applies to all situations and how we define and judge "improvement" on a year to year basis is highly subjective.

An owner has two choices: stay the course, or makes changes and hope this time you get the changes right. Neither option comes with any guarantees. Sometimes sticking with who you have is right, sometimes changing course is right. Neither choice is right all the time.

Yes, sometimes a new coach does equal success. Ask any KC fan and they'll tell you all about it.

At its root, this is a chicken-and-the-egg argument: which comes first, stability or success? Does stability lead to success? Or does success lead to stability? Throughout NFL history, there are examples of both which leads me to conclude that either can be the right route and success depends entirely on getting the right person in the job at the right time.

Do you think this was Philbin's decision? If so, you need to do some research on the decisions of the head coach and those of the GM and owner.
