FORMER DOLPHINS COACH NOT IMPRESSED WITH FINS OFFENSE FROM OTA VISIT

I feel like being in a city like Miami there's too many distractions and the Phins over the years lose focus. They are the off season champs but when the season starts they just aren't prepared to compete. They need a discplinarian as a coach to keep them focused. It was even difficult for Flores to keep them focused. We will see but I am not sure this relaxed approach will be good for a team in Miami.

I hate to say it….But this is my concern with McDaniel as an HC. Yes….It’s early….But I have to be honest….I’m slightly concerned. I don’t mind music for warmups….But why is it being played during installs and actual practice?? I’ve never even heard of that.
The music hasn’t seemed to hurt the play of the defense. The players seem to love the music and I haven’t read that a single player has stated that the music is distracting in any way during practice.

Just because you have never heard of it doesn’t make it bad. I read where there are actually 16 teams that use music in their practice sessions. In fact Flores used it a couple of years ago when he blasted out a song at camp that was said to be a dig at Kenny Stills. .

Isn't this still the off-season?

Bring this thought back in December

In the NFL during the Shula era, being a strict disciplinarian worked but other than Belichick, the successful coaches today don’t seem to be that type of coach anymore.

I don’t see Andy Reid, Pete Carroll, Sean Mcvay, or Kyle Shanahan being a head coach that is considered strict disciplinarians. They are viewed as great teachers who also have good relationships with their players.

The reason I feel the coaches who have left the Patriots to become head coaches haven’t had success is they have tried to bring the Belichick disciplinarian way to their job and players today just don’t buy into it unless you have Belichick’s history of success.

The players today have a much different attitude toward disciplinarian type coaches than they did years ago and while it is important that the players respect the head coach, I think being viewed as a players coach is far more important today than it might have been during the Shula era.

Agree. Coughlin altered his approach w/ the Giants for the 2007 season & we all know how that turned out.

My biggest concern from that clip was when he said Tua wasn't progressing, and that you can have all that speed but don't call plays you can't execute.

Sounds to me he was implying that Tua is holding the offense back.

So Westhoff is basically on a self-promotion tour for his upcoming book. Every other words out of his mouth seems to be "In my 32 years of coaching..."

Also he seems to be known for exaggeration and even is aware of himself using the wrong words to describe situations:
During the two-year writing process, Westhoff would put his thoughts on paper and then ask his girlfriend to take a look — especially when he was being critical of someone. He didn't want to go too far over the top, even for him.

“She called herself the ’dial-down instructor' because I would call her and she would say, ‘Mike, you need to dial that down a little bit,’” Westhoff said with a laugh. “So I would rethink it. I would say, 'OK, let me scratch that out. Let me rephrase that a little bit,’ and that’s kind of how it worked.”

Also seems pretty full of himself:
He also devotes a portion of the book to his “All-Star Special Teamers” — all players he coached. They include kicker Olindo Mare, punter Thomas Morstead, long snapper James Dearth, returners Leon Washington and O.J. McDuffie, and special teams standouts such as Zach Thomas, Larry Izzo, Louis Oliver, Bernie Parmalee, Kenyatta Wright, Brad Smith, Eric Smith and Taysom Hill.

“There are guys who played for me thanking me and talking about how I changed their lives,” Westhoff said. “It’s the greatest thing ever.”

For some reason the Associated Press withdrew the linked story and it disappeared from many websites.

On another line of thinking - you coached in the NFL for 31 years...and you were never much more than a Special Teams Coach?

Yet another reason to just shut the **** up, Mike Westhoff.

Posters will completely over look this because the headline is easier to run with.

Let's begin to question McDaniel know because of one OTA.

Or....does it just mean our defense is that good? 😁
In 2020, Jets backups absolutely destroyed their starters in a scrimmage of backups vs starters (1st team offense vs 2nd team defense and 2nd team offense vs 1st team defense). I'd say it was about 60/40 of their fans who realized their starters sucked vs fans who thought they had great depth.

You’re aware one of the players said last week that McDaniel’s practices are tougher than Flo’s?

Really? Tua is holding the offense back in...MAY?

Wow he got that Tua wasn't progressing and is holding the offense back off of one early OTA practice?!?! Lets burn this entire thing down based off this take!!! My concern level just skyrocketed about Tua, McDaniel, and this entire team based of this one practice!!! Im sold... Tua is a bust, McDaniel is a failed hire, and the Dolphins org just needs to be burned down and moved to Memphis.
