There's definitely a lot of negative buzz about Jon Martin today.

Barry Jackson noted the two sacks Dion Jordan had on Martin last night:

Andrew Abramson wrote a piece showing concern about Martin:

Armando Salguero wrote a piece showing concern about Martin:

Hell, even Greg Cote has weighed in:

Here's the thing. For me, all that's happened is good.

Dion Jordan said he got only ten reps in the scrimmage, and I'm sure at least half were against second and third stringers. And last night, he's still mostly working with second and third string, so I doubt he got all that many reps against the first string last night. What I'm getting at is that on a bare handful of plays against the first team over a two day stretch, he's produced four sacks.

That's really pretty incredible. It puts two things in perspective.

1. It makes the previous success Olivier Vernon was having against Martin during the first week of camp look a little suspicious. Just yesterday, prior to the practice Armando Salguero was openly pondering whether Olivier Vernon is just that good or Jonathan Martin is that bad, when recounting how the first week of practices played out. Yet, by the numbers, Dion Jordan is doing even better against Martin. As a rookie.

2. It makes Jonathan Martin look pretty bad, obviously.

It's bad for Jon Martin for sure, but that's not relevant to me at this point in time. I already figured Jon Martin was going to suck this year. You've heard me complaining about this for months and months, that the Dolphins look like they're going to move their weakest offensive lineman from a year ago to the most important position on the offensive line and I just...don't...get...that. I've never bought this faith that he was going to be like night and day compared with last year. In my experience, that happens a lot less frequently than people think. Even when they think it's happened, I often find that a thorough film view of the guy in the prior year uncovers the truth, which is that he was pretty good the previous year too but just under appreciated. Changes tend to happen more gradually than people think. So while people can talk about the improvements to his body, etc...I never expected "night and day" improvement in 2013, especially the first half of the year.

So that was already built in, for me.

What I didn't know is how good Dion Jordan would be as a pass rusher right away in the NFL, and being honest we still don't know that. I'm not saying we know that now. But we have some pretty damn positive indications and that's a good thing.

The question is, what kind of impact will this have if Jonathan Martin is indeed bad?

To me the answer is: more significant than you'd hope, and less significant than you'd fear.

I have been bringing this up before but the Miami Dolphins once won 11 games with SPENCER FOLAU at left tackle. And that was with Jay Fiedler throwing the ball and Lamar Smith running it. So trust me, a left tackle can be overcome. Many of the best passing attacks in the league don't feature accomplished left tackles. They're much better than Jon Martin was in 2012 for sure, but they're not great. So let's not get caught up thinking Miami goes from a 10 win team to a 6 win team because of this.

On the other hand, the difference is significant. Personally, I've already been building in expectations about Jonathan Martin. That's one reason I'm at 8-8 with a shade toward 7-9 as opposed to everyone else being at 9-7 or 10-6. Jake Long did not have a great year last year. He had some bad games. But here's the tale of the difference between the first 11 games of the year when Jake was manning the left tackle spot, and the last 5 games when Jon Martin was doing it:

1. The Dolphins QBs went from being pressured once every 3.5 drop backs to being pressured once every 2.9 drop backs. That's a 22% increase in pressure.

2. The Dolphins QBs went from averaging 2.0 sacks per game to 3.0 sacks per game. That's a 50% increase in sacks.

3. This could be laid directly at Jon Martin's feet as Jake Long allowed a pressure on 4.9% of pass snaps the first 11 games, and Martin allowed a pressure on 11.4% of pass snaps the final 5 games.

4. The Dolphins offense went from averaging 321 yards of offense per game to averaging 290 yards per game.

5. The Dolphins offense went from averaging 19.2 points per game to averaging 15.4 points per game.

So this could be significant enough to damage your expectations by a game or two, IF you were building in expectations of Jon Martin playing well or 'decently'. I wasn't.

If it isn't Martin at LT- who will it be, I still can not believe that they did not honestly address the LT need this year. OL concerns have been every year, why wasn't it addressed in an aggressive way
it is truly mind boggling.

its August 1, there is still time to right the ship...if on Sept. 1 Martin is still struggling at LT, THEN i will worry...

There is no Plan B in my opinion. The Dolphins are banking it all on Jon Martin and if they find that he needs help then they'll give him help.

Im taking no side on this

jordan looks good so martin is bad

martin looks good so jordan is a bust

Im very interested to see how both look in preseason

Still think Bradon Albert trade was the way to go.

Another positive noted: It's only week 2 into training camp, Martin has time to get better, he's clearly gotten bigger, now it's time to work on technique.

My local source (cousin lol) says Jordan looks like he belongs. He's better than advertised.

But if Martin is being abused I don't know what Miami could do to help him out.

i agree that martin was beaten like a rented mule at times last year, and has had his share of struggles in camp. so a lot of this, in my opinion, falls on pouncey and tannehill. pouncey is really an upper echelon player in terms of calling protection, and tannehill is certainly getting there based on his experience in the offensive system and his general maturing as an nfl qb.

if you look at lt / c / qb combinations, a lot can be said based on the synergy that they bring in order to make the offense run effectively.

i also think to some degree philbin thinks he can work with anything on the oline and turn it into useable pieces, based on his history as a coach. if you look at green bay, they haven't really had a great lt and yet were one of the best offensive teams (obviously in large part due to elite qb play). i assume philbin thinks he can get similar results here.

Is Martin a pro bowler? Hell no. Is he in the upper half of tackles in the league? I'd say no also.

However, I think the reports we see from practice every day (and keep in mind, we have to rely on twitter, anecdotal reports and second-hand witnessing) emphasize when a speed rush gets to the QB. How many tweets have we seen that say, "Martin just stalemated Vernon?" None, because then the tweet becomes focused on what happened on the play. "Tannehill hits Gibson on a slant," is what we see.

It's kind of like the nightly news. We hear about a murder in a neighborhood. Not about the 360 days out the year when it's sunny and the family takes lil Johnny for a bike ride around the block.

Again, not saying Martin will not go through growing pains. He's going to give up plays here and there during the season. But let's not pretend he's getting roasted every single play. This is why I'm waiting till Sunday night to voice a true opinion on him when I can view him play live with my own eyes.

For instance, look at this tweet a few minutes ago: (Omar, I know right?)

Omar Kelly ✔ @OmarKelly
"@jaredv87: If Martin continues to struggle in TC, think Fins will make any moves? Revisit Albert trade?"» No. And struggling isn't accurate

He'd be the first person in the world to point out if someone is truly "struggling." Given up plays? Yes. But we don't see the rest of practice. Apparently a few of our first hand reporters from this site have said he looks decent when they go to practice also.

So we'll see...

I think the fact that Martin is pretty smart guy, and an extremely hard worker is the only reason the staff has shown so much faith in him.

There really is no other reason I can think of. Just not strong enough, and I've never seen this agile tackle I keep hearing about. He just doesn't physically look like he belongs in the NFL.

I'm still hopeful though, and I don't see it as the end of the world.

It's not up to Mike Pouncey's or even Ryan Tannehill's discretion to send a back or tight end to Jon Martin's side to bail him out in 1-on-1 blocking. That's either in the game plan or it's not.

It's Pouncey's and Tannehill's job to get us in the right plays and protections that avoid 2-on-1 matchups.

I tell you this is the most damning thing about the whole Bill Parcells - Jeff Ireland regime. You can argue about draft picks who panned out and who didn't and who had input on that pick or whatever but one thing cannot be argued: since this FO came in the offensive line has been in a constant state of flux. All the draft picks and all of the FAs brought in and we're STILL worried about the O-line in training camp.

When the day comes and this FO is out the door in Davie, this is the thing we're all going to roll our eyes about.

It's still only August 1st. Martin still has some time to adapt and better learn the system and the position. Maybe they invite a veteran LT (if there is any) to camp to have as a backup/put pressure on Jon.

I think there's a loss of perspective going on with some onlookers.

When you allow 4 sacks to a rookie over the course of two days on a handful of snaps, you're not doing "OK". You're not playing "decent". You are indeed "struggling". Sorry if someone doesn't agree, but they'd be wrong. They can claim "I watch the practices I'm there every day" etc etc...doesn't matter. The STANDARD OF PERFORMANCE for what is good in this league and what is not, is what it is.

The second most important player protecting the most important players blind side is a concern with 5 weeks to go.Ryan has the right idea,if all else fails, arm lauren in the stands.Because Martin is a big question mark.

Watch out! Mr. & Mrs. Tannehill both are locked and loaded.

DOLPHINS' LEFT TACKLE BETTER DO HIS JOB. THE TANNEHILLS ARE ARMED: Dolphins left tackle Jonathan Martin, protector of Ryan

Dolphins left tackle Jonathan Martin, protector of Ryan Tannehill's blind side, had better do his job this season because Lauren Tannehill has been taking shooting lessons at a gun range and she does not want her husband's pretty face rearranged or his body damaged. Martin is pictured left, hopefully not raising his arms in surrender because he senses Lauren (right) is aiming at him. (Ryan also has been to the range; see below. His-and-her guns, ain't it cute!) Left tackle is one of the most important positions on the field, and it is the single-biggest Dolphins concern as the preseason approaches. I explore fully in today's latest column; click on The Problem That Is Left to read. Miami wanted to re-sign Jake Long, but didn't. Tried to trade for Branden Albert, but didn't. Could have drafted Lane Johnson, but didn't. Tried to sign Bryant McKinnie, but didn't. What's left to protect Tannehill's blind side is the second-year guy Martin, whose spotty training camp has not inspired confidence. I see an improved Dolphins team, but what I see missing is a quality left tackle, and that's big.
