Grading the Ja'Wuan James Pick Now

I give the pick a grade of purple

Well he's been inked in as the starter and I haven't heard much bad about him other than wake beat him quite a few times, but nobody seems too concerned so I'm feeling good about him. Wake is an absolute monster that very few guards would stand a chance against everyday in practice. Wake goes full speed every play. I grade it a B so far.

Sent from my ass using Tapatalk

Actually Omar Kelly has been preaching for a while that Wake doesn't practice at the level he plays at during games
and why would Wake be going up against guards? You do know James isn't a guard?

I'll reserve judgement regarding James after the first 2 games when he'll be tested

He was the perfect pick, we still got an explosive player in the 2nd rd in Landry and filled our need! Having another RB or WR would do nothing to help us without proper protection for your QB.

Grade the situation before they've even played in any regular season games?

It was more than that...it was before we even got to see any pro tape of him...that said I'm a believer from what I have seen...the run game work should get more consistent in time

Nothing matters to me personally until I've seen the guys in question get reps in the regular season when the games matter and the intensity is at full tilt. There are just too many extraneous variables going on during training camp and preseason to get a legitimate read.

True...and they face quality nfl edge rushers...of which the schedules chalk full of them

True people were pretty comfortable with our oline at this point last year.

The difference this year is the team actually has scheme fits...they aren't asking guys to do things they can't...like overcome angles etc with guys who weren't good lateral athletes etc...

the personnel fit the scheme much better this year...

Well, considering the OP's key word is "NOW" I interpret that to mean "at this point in time." It reflects what we so far know about James' play, the feedback gotten from unaffiliated and objective sources plus the struggles of possible alternative RTs. Of course things could, and well might change - for the better or worse, but using those criteria, in the vacuum of "here and now, " I'd characterize this Hickey pick as an inspired success.

Well I just watched James on condensed vs. Cowboys and I will say this.

We got a RT.

Albert gets hurt. James moves there and Garner takes RT.

Ditto. I just wanted the Dolphins to at least draft ONE explosive player for ONCE in my lifetime. Just once that's all.

You mean like Ted Ginn? ;^)

I'll take boring, 8 fewer sacks and over ten fewer hurries.

Copy and paste...

Yes, like Ted Ginn Jr., the only explosive player drafted in the history of the NFL draft apparently.

If we are only going to consider WRs as "explosive" players taken in the 1st, here are just a few other than Ginn:

2013
Tavon Austin
DeAndre Hopkins ("explosive," or just good? We should define the parameters, I suppose)
Cordarrelle Patterson

2012
Michael Floyd
Kendall Wright

2011
AJ Green
Julio Jones

2010
Demaryius Thomas
Dez Bryant (good thing we passed on that guy because of his mom and, you know, Ted Ginn Jr.!)

Of course, by the Ted Ginn, Jr. logic, we really shouldn't of drafted James because of Billy Milner. In fact, maybe we should trade our 1st pick, because we've whiffed on almost every position at one point or another in our history.
