Gus is starting, THAT'S FINAL. (Evidence)

Dude, coming from Saban, "a little ahead" means "the competition os OVER."

Think of ANY other positional battle on this team. Ones that are still up in the air. Has Saban EVER come out and said "well, this guy is a little ahead, or we are going to give him another start because he's more in sync with what we want to do on offense..." No, he has not.

This is a HUGE statement coming from Saban. For him to tip his hand AT ALL just screams that the job is Gus's.

To say that Gus is even "a little ahead", especially when he followed it with "in terms of what we want to do on offense..." is huge. The battle is over. Gus has won.

I agree 100%. Get used to it. Gus is the QB for week 1, barring any injuries.

No smack intended but you guys are seriously better off with Gus. Not only because he knows Linehan's system(sp?) but he's way better than AJ. As for Berlin still being in the mix, I think he makes Ray Lucas lool like a HOFamer. That about sums it up

mexico city? cool...I lived down in Ixtapa for around 10 months...very beautiful, how you end up being a finner?

I don't see us winning more than 4 or 5 games with Frerotte starting. Granted I see us winning 2 or 3 with AJ starting but this Qb situation is just plain unacceptable. Saban is throwing away this season to play Frerotte? Why? Why not bring in a rookie or young Qb and still win 4 or 5 games but get someone that can be a longterm solution? Im kind of lost as to what we are doing with the Qb situation.
OK we can wait till next year and draft someone, then its 2-4 years until he develops and a lot of lost games inbetween. Ive been pulling my hair every draft that goes by that we dont take a chance on a Qb early. Roth and Chowder are good but Id rather have taken a shot on a Qb early. Blast away, I know many on the board tow the company line and believe draft picks are "wasted" on Qbs or that every highly drafted Qb is Ryan Leaf, but look around the league at the top Qbs. Theres a ton of high draft picks and Tom Brady.
We wasted a 2nd rounder on Feeley, its obvious now that this guy is barely a backup quality Qb and we got snookered in that trade. Thats still no reason to not draft a Qb early. I dont care how many draft picks it takes, keep trying till we get a good Qb in here. We have no chance to win without a quality Qb. None.

gus is starting because of the qb's that we DO have, he gives us the best chance to win some games. that much is obvious. as to why saban didnt pick a qb in this years draft? no one will know that other than saban himself. but i believe that saban just didnt think the qb talent this year warranted spending a #2 pick on. and because he was unable to trade down from the #2, he picked the best player available.(and with the rb situation, it wsnt a hard choice). as for available vet qb's this year? we may as well stick to gus and feeley fighting it out for the job. I agree with feeley being a HUGE waste of a 2nd rounder, but u cant expect saban to start feeley just because of a stupid mistake made by someone else. i guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens with the qb spot as the year goes on. hopefully saban has a plan set up already.

(On the staring quarterback for Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh) – “We feel that, right now, Gus (Frerotte) is a little bit ahead of A.J. (Feeley), in terms of where we are, from an offensive standpoint. We are going to give him an opportunity to be the starter in this particular game. There is still competition at this position. I think A. J. realizes the competition at the position, as well as Gus. We want to see how things develop now and the chemistry develops with Gus being the starter, taking the reps with the ones and getting some turns and going from there seeing how we can affect the first unit in this particular game by practicing that way this week.â€Â

Its not exactly a ringing endorsement of Gus and I knida got the impression that Saban was pushing AJ's buttons with his emphasis that there is still competition. My translation of what Saban said was " Get your head outta your a#$ and stop feeling sorry for yourself and show me why I should even consider you starting over Frerotte"
" And you Frerotte if you dont start throwing with some fuc#ing accuracy your days are numbered here too"

Speaking absolutes is a silly thing to do.

WAIT TILL PRESEASON IS OVER.

Hmmm.. sounds reasonable. And well, it's kinda true. I think Saban was sending a little message to both QB's. Kinda pushing AJ to win the starting job and telling Gus that he still has work to do and he can lose the job.

Maybe ... if he only said "a little ahead" then maybe he's saying to try and put a spark into AJ and have him try to elevate his level. If AJ can't raise his level to compete, then he's not worthy of the starting spot.

amen

Yeah, it's so silly to do research and compare Saban's previous quotes to these and form a hypothesis.

It's pretty obvious man. Look at all the signs.

This aint Marino or Manning we're talking about. That wasnt the ghost of Elway that I saw playing those first two preseason games. The one thing that IS obvious is Saban is definitley worried about the QB position. I think he was hoping for something better going into the season with

This sounds like the most reasonable interpretation to me. If somehow AJ was to start lighting up the scoreboard and playing great he would still have a chance. It is certainly true that Gus has been unimpressive.

I dunno man, I guess when he said Gus was only a little ahead is what makes me believe Feeley has a chance, because the way people have been talking about Feeley the past few days, I kind of expected Saban to say Feeley was done for.
IMO, he made the statement subtle because he wants AJ to keep his head in the game. He couldn't very well come up to the podium and say "well guys, that's it, Gus is our man from here on in". The rest of the QBs would just shut down and stop developing and preparing. He made other statements on Sunday that eluded to that same notion...stating how important it is to keep everyone striving to be the starter...that nothing is EVER written in stone. If you want your backup guys to become the best they can be, they have to really believe that it is in fact for something.

If that were the case, Saban would not have stated "Gus is a little ahead in terms of what we want to do on offense...."

He would never tip his hand like that if there was still a true battle going on.

It aint a suprise based on teh play teh last 2 games. Contrary to what many have said, it aint because Gus has played superbly, it is he is poised and comfortable under pressure, doesnt get nervous feet and teh deer in headlights look. If AJ would have shown that the pressure didnt effect him, I think he would be in teh lead. But I just dont think Saban has confidence that AJ can handle teh pressure and defenses seem to know it or figure it out quickly. I hope Gus proves to be successfull and I give him my full support.

AJ still has a shot, but now it is Gus' job to lose. AJ will have to show great improvement while Gus needs to struggle. I dont see it, Gus is a vet and has seen pretty much everything, he may not be great, but he wont rattle.

I hope, but he does need to correct some of his own dumb arse passes.

Evidence to back up a guess. A GUESS. Thats all a hypothesis is. Disecting some quotes. Big woop. You can spin quotes into meaning anything.

Are you a Feeley hugger? Just asking because it sounds like it.

Don't get mad. I'm really just asking.
