Gus is starting, THAT'S FINAL. (Evidence)

It's Gus' job to lose right now. But if you know his history, that has happened many times before.
Couldn't have said it better.

May the BEST QB win and I don't care who that is!

Gus taking all the snaps with the first team offense gives him a chance to build chemistry with them.

AJ taking all the snaps with the second team offense gives him a chance to build chemistry with them. (if that is the case)

Hopefully, they'll both improve this week.

Yup and that is all that really matters. We just want our team and the players to improve each day.

Good point InFINS.

Dude, coming from Saban, "a little ahead" means "the competition os OVER."

Think of ANY other positional battle on this team. Ones that are still up in the air. Has Saban EVER come out and said "well, this guy is a little ahead, or we are going to give him another start because he's more in sync with what we want to do on offense..." No, he has not.

When Saban doesn't want to give away who is winning a battle, it's the same rhetoric every time.
It's: "We will continue to evaluate them on a day to day basis..." blah blah.

This is a HUGE statement coming from Saban. For him to tip his hand AT ALL just screams that the job is Gus's.

It's not like Saban would come out and say "Well, Gus is about 10 miles in front of AJ right now, AJ might as well pack it in." He can't say that.

To say that Gus is even "a little ahead", especially when he followed it with "in terms of what we want to do on offense..." is huge. The battle is over. Gus has won.

I basically think your right, its a psychological thing, he is preparing AJ for losing the starting job, as well as putting him on notice that he better really pick it up.

I do think a couple of stellar performances could chamge things though, so I wouldn't exactly say its over.

I kinda got the same impression... perhaps we're reading between the lines too much, but this is the first time he's even mentioned that one was "ahead of" the other.

The shame is that AJ really has the better arm outta both of them... But Gus shows composure in the pocket (as opposed from AJ last season, and in the preseason)...I feel more comfortable from what i have seen to have Gus as the starting QB.

Plenty of strong armed qbs that never went anywhere. Give me Montana over Ryan Leaf/Jeff George/Todd Marinovich, etc. any day of the week.

If that were the case, Saban would not have stated "Gus is a little ahead in terms of what we want to do on offense...."

He would never tip his hand like that if there was still a true battle going on.

If that WERE not the case, he would not have said 'little'. Gus is the starter by a 'little'. That doesn't instill any solidity in my eyes in terms of Gus remaining the starter. If Gus was absolutely the starter Saban would have used other words to describe the race.

Sounds to me like Saban likes Feeley, but has to go with Gus because although Gus isn't better or more talented, he has a little better understanding of the offense and is more consistent.

True enough, but Gus's arm is better than fiedler's. Overall, Gus knowing the system, the offensive line is coming around, and if Ronnie gets up to speed, we should go into this season in better shape on offense than last.

True, but that can't make you feel good that AJ has been outplayed by him so far. We need to face facts, we need a QB of the future!

I don't feel good about it at all. But I'm a lets see what happens next year guy. This year will be fun, but most of you know that I think it's a rebuilding season for us.

I was very pleased the way Gus performed against the Jags. He seems to have more control and knows how to dodge the rush. I saw Gus come out the pocket and put the ball on the money while on the run. Gus just looks better out there hands down.
