Has Philbin Won Back Miami Phans?

I like the way he has kept the team focused. That's honestly very impressive. I like the fact that the team has come out prepared to play since the Bucs fiasco. I like that the team is playing its best football right now. I like the fact that we outplayed and beat the Steelers in a snowstorm at their house in a desperate elimination game in which they pulled out all the stops and played after the whistle.

But I'm troubled at the fact that Joe's game management has been really bad in spots this year -- whereas I thought it was good overall last year. That's really the one thing that bothers me. That decision to kick the FG at the end of half against the Steelers, I know some people think I am being too harsh, but it really was a terrible decision.

Yeah, but when you consider this is the first time Joe has been a head coach of any kind, in his second year, and that he is learning on the job, I think I will give him a pass as of right now.

I've see-sawed back and forth on this, but when I really look at it, I think he has the right idea for developing Ryan Tannehill. And I think he has actually been willing to put his job on the line to do that. But I'm still very troubled by the fact that his game strategy on things like when to go for it seems to have inexplicably gotten a lot worse over the last year. Punting the ball on 4th and short at the opposing 40 yard line is such a stupid play.

He is the coach, he has the authority to cut players if he wants, and at the very least, BENCH players. That story was all PR. If Philbin wanted to do something about Cog after that incident, he could have. He didn't. Actions matter.

GM is in charge of personnel decisions. I guess your right, he could have benched him. If the story was just PR and untrue, why would Ireland go along with it as it makes him look bad.

If he keeps winning fans will like him. If he loses fans will not. Simple as that.

You really think Ireland wanted to get rid of Marshall, Vontae, Bush? All players he brought over and performed well? Hell no. Philbin didn't jive with them, so they were moved. The HC has power to influence personnel decisions. You would be dense to believe otherwise. If Philbin really wanted Cog gone, he wouldn't be here period.

The GM owns the roster in the offseason. The coach owns the roster during the season. Or that's how it's always been presented to me, anyway.

The Vontae thing was on Hard Kocks, Ireland went to Philbin with the trade proposal and although he seemed lukewarm about the idea, Philbin gave his approval. So, yes the coach has influence, but in this case he didn't initiate the trade

he never should have lost em anyways...hc has been good...but please no more 52 yard fg attempts in a blizzard joe...

you know better

You cant bench someone for what might have happened during a non-football event during the offseason. The NFLPA would be all over that. DeMaurice Smith would eat your lunch.

Philbin tried to cut Incognito and was overruled by Ireland or Aponte. That's good enough for me.

When the Martin/Cog commotion got going six weeks ago, many wanted Philbin gone next year. It appeared that he did not have the ability to lead and control a NFL team. Now, after what has happened/not happened, things look different. He has managed to get our team through this mess, seems more of a leader in control, and has even showed some emotion on the sidelines.

Has anyone changed their minds on wanting him to continue as our head coach?

If ya like, add in the consideration that this will almost certainly mean keeping Sherman and Coyle. Forget about Ireland, he gets way more than enough posts here.

My position on him never changed. Even through the Bullygate and all that **** I always liked Philbin. I'm glad he's gotten them to 7-6 with a chance to make the playoffs.

Aside from he and his family's character flaws, let's closely examine this last game in particular. Do any of you realize that if Brian Hartline, Ryan Tannehill and Sam Brenner did not beg him to throw a red flag on the Hartline TD he would not have? That is 6 points he and the officials would have cost this team which would have resulted in a loss. Much like the challenge he failed to make against New England on that Rishard Matthews catch in the third quarter which would have put the Dolphins in field goal range. A Head Coach HAS TO put his team in position to win EVERY game. And you do that by making sound decisions on the sidelines. So let's slow down on him winning back anybody.

I think the in-game decision angle is over-rated.
So many things are governed by the situation and we do not have access to all the factors in the decision making process.

I truly believe the FG at the end of the half, although a low percentage of success was an attempt by Philbin to shoot the moon and try to give Caleb a confidence boost.
He misses who cares no one hits there.
He hits and we have something the kid can build on.

The absolutely idiotic move in that play was Old Man Polomalu fielding that kick

I think he was just waiting to see what they said upstairs before he made a decision.

This post is complete speculation on the basis of nothing.
