Hickey implementing new technology for the draft

how revolutionary :rolleyes2:

how lost is cohen to even talk about that like it's a big deal

If I am looking at this correctly....this is just another tool he will be using in the decision making process and not "THE" tool.

In the end, the more information one has, the better. Again, all he has to do is find a couple of player that can start year one and nail his second round pick and he will be a vast improvement over the previous folks.

Exactly, he is not using this technology to make decisions for him, it makes his job "more efficient" as Andy Cohen said. Here is the link to the article about the new technology that Hickey is using. I suggest some take the time to read it because I have a sneaky suspicion those complaining and saying things like "New England doesn't use it" and "Just pick the right players" didn't actually watch the 10 minute video. Probably don't even really know what they are complaining about.

Snippet from the article:

Let me take you, as I was taken Monday afternoon, into Dennis Hickey’s second floor office at the Dolphins training complex. There used to be a big magnetic board in this office where players were rated and, as their rating rose or fell, those magnets were moved accordingly.

Today, that big board has been replaced by a huge screen mounted on Hickey’s wall. He calls it a Smart Board. I call it a General Manager’s best friend. It is probably 80 inches in diameter and looks a lot like a Smart TV. But this baby is programmed for football, for scouting, for ranking players at each position and for giving the Dolphins the ability to change directions and to re-think their intentions far quicker than ever before.

“We wanted to push the envelope,” Hickey said. “We wanted to reach another level.”

As Hickey speaks, he calls up a list of draft rankings to demonstrate how easy it is to swap one player with another and how quickly he can access information. The Tampa Bay Bucs, Hickey’s old employer, installed this system a couple of years ago. The day Hickey was hired by the Dolphins, he began the process of bringing it here. There is already a Smart Board in Joe Philbin’s office. There will be two on the draft room wall, one for offense, the other for defense. It’s safe to say there isn’t a magnet left in the facility.

This is all part of Dennis Hickey’s master plan. If there is an advantage, Hickey wants to find it. If there is a more efficient way to do something, Hickey wants to explore it. If speed is an essential element in coming up with the most important decisions, Hickey wants to utilize the most up-to-date technology

I interrupted Hickey for a second. “There is nothing old guard about you, is there Dennis?” I asked.

He smiled: “Not really. The only thing old guard about me is scouting. It still comes down to boots on the ground, watching tape and looking into a player’s eyes. As valuable as these tools here are, they can never replace that.”

Seems like he still does what every other GM does with the added function of better organization and technology....

shouright would be proud...

Think of it this way....

Instead of a giant magnet board, files on players, and game tape....now it is all in one place...

They can make adjustments, click on a player and bring up all the information they have on that player and the film on that player....Philbin has access to this in his office as well.

it's 2014 these guys can't be that far behind...i know what the point of it is...these are billion dollar cash cow franchises

I like how Dennis is mixing the "eye ball test" with the analytics. Good to see.

Even though there are ample reasons for cynicism and skepticism, as fans we should all hope for the best. So instead of ridiculing and dismissing this attempt at improvement, the appropriate response for even the most disillusioned should be something along the lines of "I have my doubts about Hickey but it looks like his heart's in the right place and I'd be delighted to be proven wrong." And let it go at that as there are and will be more valid impetus over which to piss and moan than the embracing of info technology.

This is not a game for rocket science. Its beauty is in the complexity of its simplicity.

WOW!!!!

somebody completely missed the point of it all or just wasnt listening.

or both.

It is revolutionary when no one else has i
t

or when you helped build and design it.

To be fair, some teams are probably scared to digitize their draft boards and notes in that material can "leave" the facility...see Bradley Manning or Edward Snowden.

If you have a war room with magnets with names on it, it is hard for that to leave building.

Secrecy is still primo with these teams and their minds the system has worked over the years.

Tampa Bay's drafts the last few years were pretty good. Their record is indicative of a college coach that lost the locker room, a vastly overrated QB, and Doug Martin getting injured along with overpaying aging defensive players. And Hickey wasn't the main decision maker. C'mon man, by that logic, if Vincent Jackson gets cut, we shouldn't bring him in cuz....der...ya know his team sucked.

Can't cure stupid.

ehh teams hand out playbooks on ipads to players they are gonna cut in camp or dont expect to make the team in the offseason all the time...it's not about secrecy...

if you ask me really cohen was asked to talk about hickey and he came up with this air time filler piece...no doubt it's true but it's not a big deal and lets sure as hell hope at the end of the day the tape does the talking and not some numbers that can tell any story you want them to tell depending on how you go about it
