Hickey implementing new technology for the draft

Just pick the right freaking players !!!

it is absolutely AMAZING how many people didnt get the point of that video and what the technology is for.

but, the haters are going to hate, no matter what, especially in dennis hickeys case wher ther level of hatred is far and away from logic as you can get.

if we get the missing pieces and go far into the playoffs and the show, these same hate at all costs types will be yelling what a fluke it all is.

AND I HAVE TO ASK THE POSTER: did you not hear or did you just choose to ignore the part about "this isnt designed to take the place of gut feeling or or completely using it to draft [or not] any certain player, the gm still has to take all the info he can and make his selection. this just gets MORE info to the gm and staff FASTER".

you miised that errrr.......what?

ehh teams hand out playbooks on ipads to players they are gonna cut in camp or dont expect to make the team in the offseason all the time...it's not about secrecy...

if you ask me really cohen was asked to talk about hickey and he came up with this air time filler piece...no doubt it's true but it's not a big deal and lets sure as hell hope at the end of the day the tape does the talking and not some numbers that can tell any story you want them to tell depending on how you go about it

True about the iPads, but I still think teams are recalcitrant because they are worried about being embarrassed if their info goes public. Football plays are similar, but not draft boards and notes on players.

I can remember the fallout when the Cowboys draft board possibly was in the background of a photo and the team took heat for it for days.

Bunker mentality.

Seems to me that with the increased pace of the draft itself in recent years, it just makes sense to have all the information you need right there at your fingertips. Instead of wasting valuable time searching for data to compare two or more available players while you're on the clock, you can quickly access it and then spend more time making the (hopefully) right decision. Whether that decision is making a selection or working the phones to make a trade. :idk:

So, technology you say? Prove it

ONDACHAINWAX prove WHAT exactly?

you and some others are like dogs chasing your own tails. you have gotten so riled up to find fault with this that you hav'nt figured out what exactly IS wrong or what is right with it!!

and the reason? you dont know what it is your loving or hating. you missed, or completely ignored exactly what this form of technology is being used for. you stamp your feet and clench your lil fists and rant and rant about how useless it is but you never get to a point! all because you didnt bother to accept what was actually said about the use of it or you ignored it.

so again, untill you can come up with the why and what for, you really dont have leg to stand on.

Hickey mentioned in an interview this morning, they are doing this to be more efficient and to speed up the process

Not sure why ANYONE would think that football and innovation do not mix. Probably one of the most myopic posts I have ever read.

Technology and football... Tuna on my hamburger- they just dont go. This is not a game for rocket science. Its beauty is in the complexity of its simplicity. But throw darts at a chart for all i care. Just make certain your 1st pick is, at the very least, a solid starter come opening day.

I know this is not the same, but it could be the pre-cursor to "moneyball" comes to football.
Given, all this data he is plugging into the system still has to come from scouts and coaches, which means opinions (which can be flawed). But this allows him and others the flexibility to look at many players we may not have expected to still be there when our pick comes up. Sometimes I think in past drafts, we've become so locked in on certain players we expected to be there, they didn't have enough information or flexibiltiy to change the pick for a potential better talent that was there. This hopefully gives Hickey that abiltiy to do so and we get better talent due to that flexibility vs. just filling a hole. How long befere someone tries the money-ball approach with F/A and the draft based on situational stats and fit?

We should take more concepts from a front office that put together a 28-52 record.

No amount of technology will turn a bad GM into a good one. What it might do is give one good GM an edge over another good GM.

A man that has every advantage and every bit of information, will always beat the man that only has his wits to help him, as long as that man with the advantages in the end uses his gut feelings and knowledge.

I think it is forward thinking and it adds another layer of data to either support the eyeball test or discount it. Some players are so tightly rated that it could help to put some separation between them.

Agreed on both counts. What about Nick? I seem to recall his fascination with the standard metrics like they use at the combine. Then, there was Bill P and his experience based wisdom.

Using technology to enhance the decision making process is a good idea. Being too reliant on technology (Hello Skynet?) is worse than being a Luddite.

You just hit knocked it out of the park. Flexibility is crucial. Look at the meatball, Henning, Sherman, etc...

I'm all for the use of analytics to help with traditional scouting. I think it's fantastic.

The key is to have someone who is actually competent performing the analytic analysis, rather than a fraudulent moron who changes his name every month.
