How many wins for Philbin to keep his job?

I'm sure Philbin, Ross, Hickey and Lazor would have all had this conversation at some point and I think they are all smart enough to realize a one year "playoffs or bust" ultimatum would be an idiotic way to run a franchise.

Yes, and I doubt Lazor would have accepted the job here if he wasn't reassured he had some job security beyond 1 year. He was in demand, and had a formal job offer from Detroit where he would have had long term job security, but he chose Miami. I doubt he would have come here if he thought he would only be here for 1 year.

Playoffs.

If no playoffs, call me crazy but maybe Lazor takes over as HC?

I've said this before, but I'll leave it to how hard the team plays. If we play hard but lose games out of bad luck, injuries, or issues with players getting outplayed / depth issues, then I can't really squarely blame Philbin for that, and I don't think Ross should either.
If there are zero blowouts, and the team always looks prepared and puts up a fight, not really much more you can ask for from a HC in my mind.

No excuses though if schemes clearly aren't working at all, adjustments aren't made at halftime, and players lack motivation. That all falls on Joe.

I just hope to God we aren't in a playoff type atmosphere game week 17 again where you need to win to get in. And that has less to do with Philbin and more to do with the fact that I would probably say the same thing if I'm a Bengals fan....

i think jets and bills will tell us if we are going make playoff, win them 4 game and we will make playoff.

Post of the week. How many times has a loss to one of those 2 crushed our playoff hopes.

last time we did that was 2003 and barely missed the playoff at 10-6

Prior to that it was 1996 and 1997 and we made the playoffs both of those years.

No excuses to lose to them if you think you can hang with the Patriots.

I agree, Lazor is going NO WHERE. As soon as they kick Philbin to the curb about mid season, Lazor will step in as head coach.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. The only way we aren't in a playoff atmosphere is if we are completely out of the race. Are you hoping we have no shot at the playoffs going into the final week, or are you figuring on us going 13-3 or something? Even then our last game would probably still decide home field or something.

I feel exactly the opposite. All I want is to go into the last game with a chance to play a meaningful game. A game that makes a difference towards our playoffs. If we choke again at least we will know what we have, if we win under the pressure we will know that our coach is much improved. Either way it would be much better than not being relevant going into the last week.

Lazor strikes me as a guy who has head coaching potential, but let's face it, if the team is bad enough to get Philbin fired, it probably wasn't the defense. And that means you sure ain't promoting Lazor.

That is pure speculation. Our defense was ranked outside the top 20 last year, and our LBs are a joke. Once teams start game planning to expose our weaknesses we are going to have Jimmy Wilson and our 3 LBs covering very good players. Everyone thought our defense was going to be top 5 last year and we were closer to bottom 5 than top 5.

One quarter of a preseason game doesn't prove ANYTHING. One thing we know for sure is that after the first week we won't be in the top 20. We may be able to move up a bit the 2nd week, but we will be doing it without Jones and Jordan. If we are not in the top 15 in total defense this year we won't be a winning team. Our fast paced offense will need the ball often, and our defense can't continue this giving up 50 yards of field position ever drive, and expect to win. We have to start getting teams off the field on 3rd down.

Our defense has potential, but to say if the season goes to crap we know it won't be the defense's fault is just not true.
