How will Flores regain respect of team after a historically bad season? (Analysis)

I hope Flores saves his money.

The way this season is shaping up the players who are still trying will let up, especially the vets who already got paid.
And the scores will be just as bad.

Still convinced if Harbaugh is fired Ross will do whatever it takes to hire him and Flores will be on the street with a terrible HC record and had zero chance to rebound in year 2. Especially with the first overall, I could see ole Jim taking this gig and Ross would backtrack on saying he was tired of blowing money in FA to convince Jim to coach here.

I made this point in VIP last night, but getting the fanbase back onside is going to be even harder,

Fans still bring up Philbin picking up a gum wrapper after all these years, but Flores is going to be trusted to groom Tua after going 1-15?

The difference is that most of those teams had just the first pick not 2 first 2 seconds 2 thirds ect and 113-143 million in cap space. Plus give the coach time to put his type players on the team that fit his system.

Problem, most of these teams weren’t intentionally dismantled before the season. Many still had some good players around. This team will take a lot longer to rebuild than most of those teams. The Browns, for example, already had multiple talented young guys from prior high picks, during their winless season. Makes it much easier to rebound once a QB is in place.

Caveat: Obviously in Week 2 we don't know the final record, but I think its safe to say that this will be a historically bad season with no more than 3 wins.

With that out of the way, I am wondering how Coach Flores will be able to regain the respect and trust of this team moving forward after a really bad year. His players will have busted their *** for an entire season with little to show for it, so how will they react? Maybe it doesn't matter since a lot of these players, perhaps even the majority, will be gone. But how will the players who stay react to him? How will potential free agents view him?

It's a bit unfair for Flores since the GM intentionally set out to lose as much as possible this season, but he signed up for this. And he is doing more than his share to bring it to fruition.

So I wanted to take a look at how coaches who ended up with the #1 overall pick fared with the team after their massive failure of a season. I looked at every season since 2000. You can see the results below.

It doesn't look good for Flores.

The vast majority of HCs (13) who sucked enough to get the #1 overall pick were fired after that season. Only 3 lasted another season before being fired. 2 lasted 2 more season, while Marty Schottenheimer was the outlier spending another 3 (successful) seasons with the Chargers.

Of the 1st year HCs, only 2 spent more than 1 more season with the team: Steve Spagnuolo with Rams for 2 more seasons and Hue Jackson for 2 more (epically futile) seasons. 3 of the 1st year HCs were fired after their first year of failure. Lovie Smith was the only other 1st year coach who landed #1 pick and he lasted one more season.

Also of note, the vast majority of these coaches never got another HC gig in the NFL. Only John Fox, Jim Caldwell, and Gary Kubiak went on to get another HC gig with varying success. One thing to note about these guys is that all of them had substantial success with these teams prior to their disastrous #1 pick landing season.

So history does not bode well for Flores if this season ends how we all think it will. Fact is, its very difficult for these HCs who haven't already built some trust with players with previous success with the team or elsewhere to rebound from this sort of historic failure. For the majority of them, this kind of season effectively ends their careers as HC.

For the love of God, stop saying we are deliberately tanking. That is not the game plan each week, we just suck. We got rid of older players with bad contracts except for Tunsil, we traded him because the Texans were willing to over pay. It's not like we are benching guys who better so we can lose. We are going through a real building process like the teams above, those teams I assure you were not deliberately trying to lose every game. These people all have jobs at stake.

I don't think the coaching staff is deliberately trying to lose, at least I hope not, but the Front Office surely purposely dismantled the team in an effort to land the #1 overall pick. The way Grier turned over the roster on the week before the season started and the way he is selling off all of his good, young players kind of proves that.

It's been historically bad 2 games, not a season.

And you think they will somehow repair the holes in the Titanic in time to stop it from sinking? How?

In any case, my original post has a caveat that addresses this.

Other than the Tunsil trade, what moves are you referring to?

@SkapePhin why are you trying so hard to explain a "tank job you and others subscribed to? Why does anybody in your realm of the "tank for Tua" world cares what happens this season? Why do any of you care what happens to Flores afterwards? He is fulfilling your wet dreams. Isn't that a great thing?
You all wanted to go 0-16. If I would be you I'd gather all the "tankers" right now and start building statues of Flores and Grier because no matter what happens to them after the season right now they are fulfilling your dream.

Ohhhhh, I forgot: the Dolphins are not losing the right way. There are restrictions on how you can lose when you are "tanking".
