In one sentence I will put the Juwan James selection into perspective.

Im discounting your experience because it has little to do with this situation.

That makes absolutely no sense. Bench pressing is bench pressing, whether you're a doctor or NFL player. The physics of your body type is what separate them.

other prospect goes through the same process as James. Even the long arm ones. They dont have to much trouble with it.

Oh ya, every prospect? Regardless, they may have either been working with a better trainer or they possibly lift more often than James.

Perhaps when the combine creates a special lifting event for long arm prospects that totally replaces the bench press i'll change my tune. Until then, i'll keep laughing at the idea that long arms automatically mean its acceptable to not lift as many weights as virtually everyone else.

Spoken by a man who clearly doesn't lift anything more than twinkies and his laptop.

so james could only put up 22 reps with 35" arms and somehow - apparently defying physics - his teammate (richardson) was able to put up 36 reps with the exact same arm length.

don't be mean if you don't know what the fugg you're talking about. just don't talk.

Did it ever occur to you his teammate could've devoted more time to his form on the bench press?

Nobody ever said anything about NOT being able to bench with longer arms. The physics are indisputable that bench press for people with longer arms is a little more difficult than those with shorter.

'devoted more time to his form on the bench' is code for 'that other guy with the exact same arm length is just stronger', right?

yes i am aware that it is tougher. that does not mean, however, that james isn't weak. look at those shoulders man. and we drafted him to play on the right side, correct?

he needs to get functionally stronger in order to succeed on the right side in the nfl. i think he'll end up playing on the left on down the line, but that's just me.

my point to you was don't get all huffy with someone over something that could easily go either way. sure it's harder, but as his teammate - and many, many before him - proved, its done all the time.

Plain and simple, if the o-line gets fixed and affords the offense the time and holes it needs to score points and Tannehill takes another step, nobody will care where we took James. If not and we suck again next year, it'll be just another season of suffering.

I think you're co-mingling what I said with other people's comments. I agree completely about the strength issues. I mentioned the narrow shoulders in another thread after I saw those pics of him in the Dolphins facility today. Typically you want your OT's to have wide, broad ones to make it tougher for DE's.

I only brought up the physics of bench pressing with long arms vs. short arms because there were naive comments being made that there's no difference.

He did 22 reps @225. The worst an OT did in that category was 21. He's weak.

I have watched football for about 42 of my 48 years and I have yet to see weights and a bench press on the field. Tackles are notorious for a low reps on a bench press because of their long arms. The kid was drafted because of his pass protection, for the way he moves, and his intelligence as a football player. He will not be asked to be a mauler in the running game. He will use his ability to move and wall of opponents in the run and screen game. I really like him as a player. My only gripe with the pick was that I think the Dolphins should have taken the offer to trade down because, as long as Miami would have stayed ahead of Carolina, I think they still could have selected him.

Bench press is not the same thing as functional football strength. Bench press is a lot about technique. James must and will get stronger but I can assure you that if he can hold his own on the football field, nobody will care what he benches. NFL history is littered with workout warriors that turned out to be busts.

He is an upgrade over last year. An experienced GM may have traded down and got an extra 3rd. With that extra third I would have doubled down on the OL with another RT or RG. Worst thin that could have happened would be we lose James and sign Bitonio who they love love love at pick #26.
