I put quotes around "Inside" because I don't really have a contact or anything, just something I heard today from a person I consider to be very reliable. I have a good friend in Miami that drives a taxi and every once in a while he'll pick up some interesting people. Celeberties, athletes and what not. Anyway, he called me today because he picked up a well known sports medicine doctor. I don't remember the name but this guy apparently evaluated Duante's knee and knows a good deal about his injury.

What he had to say was that the Fins are going to try to have Daunte start week 1. HOWEVER, this doc said that there is NO WAY that he will last the season just because he's starting week 1. He said that if he starts as planned then by week 3, or so, he will begin to have swelling that will require him to rest. He also said that this will more than likely happen more than once throughout the season but he feels that he will recover fully. Another thing he noted that was actually kind of worrysome is that Daunte's knee was apparently damaged more than McGahee's. OUCH! He said they both tore all 3 ligaments but Daunte had 1 particular ligament that was drastically worse then McGahee's. Even with this, though, he predicts a full recover and he expects him to start week 1.

Take this for what it's worth. I've never posted any "Inside" information but there are few people in this world that I trust more than the friend it came from. He's had to have kneww surgery himself and he knew who this doctor was. Anyway...I just wanted to share.

Thanks for the report.

So the plan w/ Harrington might not be to start him the first couple games, but to use him to spell C-Pep when he is swelling up/wearing down.

Interesting possibility.

I wonder what will lead to the swelling? Him running on it? Seems like he's doing alot of that now. Hits to the knee? That would probably lead to alot more than just swelling.

Thanks for the info....haven't heard that take on the injury being worse then McGahee...plus the swelling factor.

Must be why Saban pushed so hard to get Joey early, to improve the learning curve.

Sure he's doing some running on it now but that can't be compared to Game Time stress the knee will have to endure. I'm no specialist but I would imagine that the swelling would be because the knee would not have gone through that hard a workout in a long time and it will still be sensitive.

Teams tell doctors this much information???

That's crazy though - Willis had a nasty looking injury, and to think Daunte's came out worse.... dangggggg

One part I forgot to include is that the reason for comparing to McGahee was not because it was that much worse really. It's just that McGahee apparently had one of the 3 ligaments not shred as bad as the other 2 where Daunte had extensive damage to all 3.

That's probably the case. I wonder how much swelling he has now due to the stress he's currently putting on it with the rehab.

I assume they will if the team asks, "Doc, our plan is to start him week 1. What are the possibilities of that happening? What are the risks?"

I have heard the swelling thing before but not the McGahee thing. The question is will swelling occur regardless of when he starts? I would rather have Joey play until DC can play without running into to swelling. But if the swelling is inevitable than we have no choice. Continuity will stink if they are switching back and forth.

thanks for the scoop. not very comforting, but thanks for sharing anyway.

Thanks for the info. I have had two ACL replacements in one knee, and one operation included a PCL and meniscus replacement. I am a rugby player, but blew the first one out playing basketball with friends and the second time I got nabbed badly in a rugby match. that hurt bad.

it took me two years to feel fully recovered and regain my strength and speed from the second surgery, and only a year from the first. No doubt he is going to have lots of swelling to deal with as the scar tissue is a pain in hte butt. The scar tissue is hard, nasty, and creates knick points in the joint which make fluid rotation difficult. That is where all of my swelling came from.

I have to believe he will be able to play fairly effectively throughout the year, but there is also a fair chance he will tear up some scar tissue and potentially some loose bodies and need another clean up. I think it is best to start Harrington and let Daunte come back after 4-5 games and then roll from there. I just don't want him screwed up for the long term.

knee injury like his you have to expect swelling. We'll just have to wait and see. I'm going to physical therapy right now for a rotator/shoulder surgery and I was asking my physical therapist about Daunte's injury to his knee. They both said the same thing. If the injury is as bad as FIRST reported, there is know way Daunte will last the year never mind start week one. BUT!,if the injury is less severe than reported, then he could play, but he will be taking a lot of ice baths!

By the way, does anyone happen to have a video clip of Daunte's injury? I don't think I've ever seen it.

its all coming clear now. saban is going to pull a spurrier and rotate quarterbacks a la noah/doug johnson!

sorry noles fans, sucked to be you that day!!!!! =)

"In 1997, Spurrier shocked then-No. 1 Florida State by alternating Johnson and Noah Brindise when the Gators upset Florida State 32-29 at Florida Field. "
