The closer you get to a TD the more desperate the Defense gets to stop you. Remember Miami's bend-but-don't-break defense? The better defenses can clamp down. I think offenses get more predictable as they get closer, there's not as much room to maneuver and the QB has to react quickly with no time to check down. It seems that offenses run fewer routes with a primary receiver to be checked at the line, and a dump off if the coverage switches.
