Is Gates a true lock?

Lots of people around here need to change their expectations of what rookies should be showing during the preseason.

Especially offseasons that began about 3 weeks ago

I agree with the topic starter, i mentioned this a few days ago. While i would love to have some real speed on our receiving corps, i just havent seen anything impressive from this guy yet. People are overrating this guy based on his fast speed but until he shows some playmaking ability i would not let go of roberto wallace or philip livas because they have impressed and shown they are playmakers. Ted ginn is a great example of not gettin a hard on for speed, show me some playmaking skills gates and il be convinced. Speed is just a bonus. Davone bess doesnt have killer speed but look at hows hes looked himself as one of our main receivers, playmaking ability! Something gates has not shown. Gates is not a lock at all, He has done absolutely nothing to impress sparano. Chad henne overthrew him a little bit in the falcons game yea but how do we know that gates just didnt get to where he needed to be? he didnt have all that much seperation from the dbs on that play at all even though he was infront of them. Like i said, as of now, this guy is highly overrated on this forums and will most likely be cut unless he impresses sparano.

No, Gates has more touchdowns then Marshall and Bess this preseason, He also go overthrown on a deep pass by Henne last week, He's done more than enough to be on this team, Wallace is a lock as well. Livas and Moore are gone.

Here is who I would keep at WR so far..
Brandon Marshall no brainer All Pro
Devon Bess great slot receiver
Brian Hartline great hands
Clyde Gates real burner
Phillip Livas great returner
The rest will have to battle it out for the sixth WR, which might be need for all Brian Daboll's 3 and 4 WR sets.

Well one thing for sure, and they were saying this during the Panthers game - The safety has to respect his speed therefore making this offense more creative... That alone, should be a major factor to keep him..

Didn't we hear this same crap not so long ago
didn't seem to help our other receivers very much
as she was running amok!

I would change Livas for Wallace because Wallace is a kid with a lot of upside, very good speed and he's solid on special teams for both the coverage on return units. Livas is strictly a return man. Livas would be a 6th WR if you make room for 6 WRs.

you gotta be blind to think gates has done anything impressive to make this team in any of these preseason games or your just a sucker for speed. Livas gone? sheesh, the only guy whos shown any real talent is being cut? Moore can go, he earned a cut off this team.

I like Gates, but for this year I think his role is simply going to be to stretch the defense. He's not as good as Mike Wallace, and that's all that Wallace did his first year in Pittsburgh, and that was with a much better QB. I think you'll see what you've really got with Gates in year 3. He's making a big jump up in competition, you need to give him some time.

I can not believe how you can question Clyde Gates status on this team...

Clyde Gates has had a very good camp this year, considering he's a small school rookie performing in a CBA-shortened preseason. In camp there are reports of Gates making catches over Sean Smith, Vontae Davis, and several other DBs. Although, he is not the idea size by this regime's standards, he plays tough and bigger than his size and he shows absolutely no fear on the field. He is a former basketball player that has tremendous leaping ability which has shown in camp when he has made several catches over defenders. He did not drop any passes in the preseason games, and there are no reports of issues with drops in camp. He has played against the first team defense in BOTH preseason games, and proved to be a serious deep threat by blowing past their DBs. He has consistently beaten defenders deep in camp, and preseason games, and it is not his fault our QBs failed to connect with him yet; this will take time since he is a rookie who has not had much time with these QBs, also he is currently behind players such as Marshall, Bess, and Hartline on the depth chart. As the season goes on, this will improve, but the fact he can blow by DBs pretty easily is enough to open up plays for Marshall, Bess, Fasano, and Bush underneath. That alone is an asset no other receiver on our team possess, that is why he was drafted (SPEED). Coaches and teammates have raved about his skill set and work ethic too. He is light years ahead of Robert Wallace and Marlon Moore when they were rookie receivers.

I like Roberto Wallace, his development is going in the right direction, he has great size and decent speed. Marlon Moore still seems to be inconsistent, he still needs more time to develop, but seems to be the odd man out. IMO, Phillip Livas is only a return specialist (which we sorely need), but I am not sure if that is good enough to keep him active. If there is one WR that ends up being released, it will come down to Livas or Moore.

He's open all the time. He's a tough guy when going after the ball, AND he catches it.

By all the time do you mean in the second half of versus guys that won't make the team he can outrun them down the field?

i will be happy if becomes our mike wallace, 4 catches 100 yds 1td

Seriously?! You're gonna call the man blind when his assessment is correct?! Gates has CONSISTENTLY gotten behind the defense both in practice, and against first string defenders in preseason. He had a nice touchdown against the Falcons but yet he's shown nothing impressive? Speed kills, and the man has it. What has been a huge problem in the past with the Dolphins? No speed!
