Is right tackle Ja’Wuan James worth a multi-year contract paying him between $9 million and $10 million annually and a third-round pick? Because that’s essentially what it would cost the Dolphins to keep him. By allowing James, the Dolphins’ former first-round pick, to walk, they would likely get a third or fourth in return next year. And they could package that pick with other assets to go get their quarterback.

I agree! I don’t want James back due to how much it would cost to keep him. In 5 years he has done nothing to prove he deserves to be among the highest paid at RT. He is inconsistent, often injured, is prone to sacks and penalties, and has never been an all pro or pro bowler. Why would you pay an average RT as one of the best in the NFL? Throw in the 3rd round draft choice, and it’s a no brainer. A 3rd round pick in 2020 can help land Tua. I made this same point on twitter over a month ago.

Common sense says don't sign him. Let another team release him in 2 years.

That's it. That would be why we re-signed him. Not because of his ability but because of the state of the OL. Can't even say he's durable.

I get both sides of it and I'll be ok with the outcome either way.

Maybe it's a positive that a new staff can evaluate him without any bias.

The counter argument would be that that is/will be the going rate for "above average" at the position, and releasing him creates another hole to be filled in the draft.

I can see it going either way, depending on what JJ has in mind.

RT is also where Jesse Davis has looked his best. Making someone the highest paid at the position should only be done because he has earned, and not because we don’t want a new hole.

Hopefully, our new line coach can evaluate our talent to help make these decisions. This decision and many others depend on how aggressively we will "rebuild/tank" the team and which draft we are aiming to draft the Franchise QB.

I don't disagree, but that can be said of many players. Is X worth top CB $ AND two 1sts? (I'm making that up) The same is true of a number of players on every team every year, yet, most below average teams keep many of those players. I admit I don't know the process any FO uses and I'm agnostic on James. I seem to say this in many threads, but until fans know Flores' goal for '19, no one knows what any individual player is 'worth'

If this is indeed an import of the Patriot model that's coming to Miami then you let him walk. It would be great if the system was designed to reward teams that pay their own but that's not how its set up. James is replaceable and the Dolphins will benefit from viewing him as such.

A football genius is not required to identify and manipulate the system the NFL has set up for compensatory draft picks. Its a pretty simple approach. Don't sign your own free agents to overpriced contracts and attempt to identify undervalued players that can be acquired via trade or late in the free agent process. I assume the NFL will eventually move to even things out a bit and include players traded for picks in their compensatory calculations but at the moment they don't so the clever GMs will take advantage of it.

It is true that its impossible to judge a player's worth, especially in this sport where there are so many pieces that have to operate in a cohesive manner. What you can do however is calculate the difference. If the two options are James and Davis is the difference between the two worth 40+ mil and a 3rd or 4th rounder?
