Is Saban the right choice?

I liked Bates but, watching another few years of 4 man rush, safeties deep and man coverage on the outside down after down would have made me smash my T.V. into little pieces.

I am SICK AND TIRED of hearing people complain out Bates defensive scheme. people did we or did we not have one of the best defenses in the League? i would much rather have a basic defense that leads the league, than have a blitz happy defense that either gets the sack or gives up the big play. the defense that bates ran worked plain and simple.

Hey Dolphins fans,
I just signed up for this site and ever since his hiring, I've been concerned with the hiring of Nick Saban and the decisions he has made. The guy hasn't coached in the NFL in who knows how long, and now we are giving him full responsibility? His last year in the NFL wasn't great, those Browns teams that he was the DC of weren't great, and overall, I feel he is overrated. He only had one great season at LSU and now BOOM, he is our coach. I'm not really impressed with the guy at all. I have a feeling that he might just be the next Spurrier, I just think he has been out of the game too long. Plus, I don't think he knows enough about offense and our biggest concern is offense. Our defense was fine before.

I'm just worried, I don't think Saban is the great thing that we are all expecting. I don't think he will finish his contract.

Saban is on his honeymoon with the fans, to say something negative before he even plays his first game is a little too premature.. I'm not totally sold on him, but I don't see any reason he can't win in the NFL.

While I don't agree with you, I respect your opinion. Tell you the truth, you may actually be the first person(outside of the Bills fans) that think Saban will fail. I mean, even ESPN for crying out loud thinks he will be a success. If you have paid attention to what he has done here from hiring a staff, to FA, to the draft, you will see that he has a Pro Football mind. Spurrier never had that feel to him, but Saban has since day 1. You are worried he won't finish his contract, I am worried on how long it will take to extend his contract.

If Jim Bates was such a solid choice then why did none of the other teams looking for a head coach hire him?

I liked Bates but, watching another few years of 4 man rush, safeties deep and man coverage on the outside down after down would have made me smash my T.V. into little pieces.

Bates got the next best thing to a HC job -- a DC job with a team that is likely to be making a change by the end of the season if not before. Given the context there, it seems to me that GB management was concerned that they'd be making a change in mid-stream or after the season and wanted him because they thought he'd at minimum be an excellent interim coach. I'll go ahead and call him the favorite for the GB job when it opens up.

I agree 100%. Bates will be the head coach in Green Bay starting in 06'.

Thank you! I don't understand why so many people think it's going to be so easy for Saban to make the switch to the NFL. He has coached college for such a long time, this is a completely different game people.

I don't understand why your so concerned? Saban's two biggest hires were his offensive coordinator, and his offensive line coaches. They have been in the pros a long time, and have had nothing but success!! He is a defensive minded coach, and he said thats the side of the ball he will spend most of his time with, while letting the offense run itself with some inputs from him.

His defense the last time he was in the NFL was very good, so he knows what up NFL wise.

Most of us fans are extremely excited about Saban's reputation as a very hard working coach who actually knows how to lead people into these type battles. The man is considered a genius.

Sure he can fail, but so can everyone who coaches next year. So far he is miles ahead of Wanny, who was a hard worker that had no business as a head coach in the NFL. It's not all about how well we think Saban will do, it has a lot to do with how this team of pretty talented players has failed under Dave Wrongcoachstedt. We're very happy for the CHANGE~~~~~

Very Well said!:drinkers:

I think we all hope (and think) that Saban will do well, but your point is well taken. What you say is possible.

It worked alright...

If your idea of "worked" is never winning big games and December collapses.

His great scheming (not all his fault....it was also Wanny's rampant conservativeness) won us a grand total of absolutley nothing.

I want and EXPECT more...obviously some Dolphin fans are happy with 9-7/10-6, sneak in as a wild card and get killed in the first round....I'm not among you though.

Who knows Bates may have turned out to be one hell of a head coach. the team did seem to respond to him last year. i personally would like to have seem if charlie wies wanted the job. there was more choices than Saban. we just didn't explore them because Wayne had tunnel vison on Saban.

Charlie Weis is overrated. His schemes have always been questionable. He gets too pass happy. He looks like a genius because he has the best player in the game running his offense.

Funny, people want to hire Weis...who I believe has zero head coaching experience. But the same people say that Saban was the wrong choice because of lack of experience? Contradictions 'R us.

Consider that Bate's defense rarely got more than a minute or two of rest because of our offense. The big games...especially playoff games put Jay Fiedler and Wanny's conservative offense against upper tier defenses and the result was usually 3 and out.

Come on man... we all know... "It's okay to punt." Nothing wrong with punting. ;)

I don't know enough about Saban to develop an actual statement about him. What I can add is, you guys are setting your expectations very, very high.

Personally with the talent we continue to carry into this year. I don't think a 6-10 or 8-8 season is setting our expectations too high. I may be a homer, but we are not that different of a team talent wise from 2003. I blame last year mainly on the coaching chages. There was absolutely to coherency on the team that I could see.

I just can't see us going in reverse this year and we were in almost all of our games last year. Even with all the confusion.
