Jason Cole: Tom Gamble said to be Ross' top pick for GM

1. What do we know about this guy? I mean, what do we REALLY know about this guy? Because I look at where he worked, and the years he's worked at those places, and it looks good. But what was he actually doing there?

2. This sounds a lot better than the ghoulish nightmare Armando Salguero has been floating to cover his boy Jeff. Interesting.

Yeah and apparently the Eagles wanted Wilson but got scooped, or is that what you're referring to?

I'm just talking in general about the rewards you can get when you take a risk. I mean, I get it. Nobody wants to put their franchise in the hands of a CFL guy. The optics are terrible. People will laugh at you. Does he know how to scout top talent? Does he know how to deal with big time CFB head coaches? Does he know how to deal with NFL egos, with NFL media, with NFL pressure and on and on and on.

On the other hand... the playoffs. 20 times. In a row. What if this guy is a goddamn genius, and because of the CFL stigma you let someone else be the hero and they turn out, you know, to be the hero? Because it's not like you can just go and hire the 2nd best CFL GM and get the same guy. Sometimes you only get one shot, like with Russell Wilson. That was a risk, too. I mean, ****, I said up and down that I thought he should have been a first rounder and taken above Griffin, but I'm also not trying to drag a billion dollar franchise up a hill. It takes balls to do this kind of thing.

The Eagles took a risk and signed Chip Kelly when everyone else was dubious. Looks like that worked out. Go back a few years, and the Bills hired a guy named Marv Levy from the CFL to be their coach. That worked out. Go back a few more years, the Vikings hired a CFL coach named Bud Grant. He took them to four Super Bowls. It's not like they play football in parking lots and their locker rooms are made out of old barns.

I suppose it's the kind of move that a desperate team makes and it pays dividends for them. The Dolphins job is apparently coveted enough we can pick off the top of the heap. But these kinds of out-of-the-box options deserve front-of-the-brain scrutiny, imo.

Your point 1 was my first thought.

GM is ultimately a CEO. I think that Ross will be much more comfortable in these interviews then coach. He knows a successful executive when he sees one. Or I at least assume he does.

LOTS of all pro names in there. and there are a LOT of players in those drafts who we dont recognize off the bat who are filling depth and special teams roles. his guys, top to bottom are actually making the team and producing. IMAGINE THAT??

we could do a WHOLE LOT WORSE than mr. gamble. BILL POLIAN holds him in the highest regard as a gm candidate and personel man.

Yep. The person who got me interested in Popp is my old man, who is the same person who got me interested in this cursed franchise. He's become a big fan of the CFL game over the years and insists that in a lot of ways, it's actually a better game than the NFL right now.

I think Trestman will open some eyes, and eventually, more doors.

Barry Jackson also now reporting that Gamble is a top target:

BARRY "ACTION" JACKSON said:
We hear Eagles vice president of player personnel Tom Gamble is a very strong candidate for the Dolphins' general manager job. He is among the candidates expected to be contacted, and Stephen Ross has heard positive reviews about him. Some believe Gamble is Ross' top choice, but that still must play out, with interviews playing a factor in who gets the job.

Gamble, considered a strong talent evaluator, returned to the Eagles as vice president/player personnel last offseason after eight seasons with the 49ers, including time as vp/player personnel.

Gamble has had a role in the front office of 12 playoff teams, including five with the Colts. Besides the Colts, 49ers and Eagles, he also has worked for the Jets, Panthers and Ravens. He has experience in pro and college scouting and spent 1995-96 as a defensive assistant coach with the Jets. His father, Harry, was a former GM and president of the Eagles.

Gamble, 49, interviewed for the Jets, Jaguars, and Chargers GM jobs last offseason.

As Armando Salguero noted in his column, former 49ers GM Scot McCloughan -- now in the Seahawks personnel department -- is another name that has been raised.

Pittsburgh executive Omar Kahn might be interviewed. And The National Football Post reported Green Bay director of player personnel Eliot Wolf is a candidate. He's the son of former Packers GM Ron Wolf.

Former UM standout Alonzo Highsmith, who also works in the Packers front office, would welcome Dolphins interest.

It's worth noting that the last two teams Gamble worked for -- San Fran and Philly -- are heavily into analytics. Also, somehow I'd missed that Gamble spent time as a coach. I love to see that, personally. One of the main attractions of a guy like Nick Caserio of the Patriots is that he's coached, then went into scouting, then back into coaching, and then back to scouting again.

Aj Jenkins was a terrible first round pick for gamble
