No, you don't seem to understand. Lets play a game I'll play Ireland and you play Philbin.
Philbin: I need a LT
Ireland: You have Martin who was a good tackle in college and I'm not getting anybody else at this time.
Your move.
I have an imagination, too, and this is how I guess it all went down:
Part I
Ireland: What do you think of Jake Long?
Philbin: He's got talent, but he's been injured a lot, and he's not really a good fit. I need an athletic LT for my ZBS, who can consistently pass protect. I need a guy who's coachable, too and doesn't talk back.
Ireland: Well, Long has one more year on his contract, no problem, I can draft one and he can learn at RT for a year.
Philbin: Great.
Ireland: How about Jonathan Martin from Stanford?
Philbin: Perfect fit.
Part II
Ireland: How is Jake Long doing?
Philbin: He hurt his knee. How healthy is this guy, anyway?
Ireland: He's got some medical issues, but he's been solid for us. How is Martin doing so far?
Philbin: Doing everything we ask of him, good character guy. My coaches love him.
Ireland: What's the update on Jake Long and Jonathan Martin?
Philbin: Long is hurt again. He will miss some games.
Ireland: That's too bad, well there are options on who can be plugged in, if you think Martin can handle it temporarily, he can play LT, and it will also give us a peek at seeing how he'd do long term.
Philbin: That's fine. I'm happy with the way Martin is developing, he's not ready to handle LT full time yet, but filling in will give him some experience.
Part III
Ireland: Well, it's a new year now, Long should be ready to go.
Philbin: Yeah, well I feel like I can't count on him.
Ireland: Well, he does have a history of injury, but he's been solid for us. We have to make a decision because this is his contract year. It will cost a bundle to keep him. But if we have Martin as leverage, we may be able to get the price down. What do you think of Martin at this point, is he developing, or is he a bust?
Philbin: He's not a bust at all, we like him, he's coming along.
Ireland: Ok, well he'll be our fallback option if negotiations with Long don't work out.
Part IV
Philbin: Give me the update on Jake Long.
Ireland: It's not happening. Jake is looking elsewhere.
Philbin: What are our options?
Ireland: We can draft one if we need to, but Martin will likely win the spot anyway because he has more experience. The only premium player is Brandon Albert, but we'd have to sacrifice a draft pick for him. There are lower tier players like McKinnie out there. You're the coach, can Martin handle LT, or not?
Philbin: He can handle it, if it comes to that. But personnel is your job, you make the call.
Ireland: Well I've seen Jon Martin and it doesn't look like he's been developed much at all.
Philbin: Are you telling me I haven't done a good enough job with Martin?
Ireland: I gave you a LT, why haven't you coached him up?
Philbin: Eff U.
Ireland: You too.
Philbin (to Dawn): Ireland is not working with me. He's shutting me out of the process.
Dawn: Ireland doesn't work with anyone. He's an ass. Tell me what you need.
Philbin: I need a left tackle.
Dawn: I thought we just drafted one last year.
Philbin: Don't start...
Dawn: Well, I've hammered out the numbers with Brandon Albert's agent and it's all set. The money's there. It's just a question of what draft pick his team wants in exchange. What draft picks are you willing to give up for him?
Philbin: That's not my job.
Dawn: You're right, it's not....it's not mine, either.
Philbin: Well, whatever happens, I'll still be here, so I'm not worried.
Dawn: I'll still be here too!
(High five)
