Joe Philbin ranks very low among the NFL’s best head coaches.

stop it, the Jets were not the favorites at that point in the season. 2 weeks earlier before we started the 3 game losing streak we could have been considered a favorite but that was early.

Geno was a ROOKIE who wasn't even going to start for us, Ryan was in year 2 for Miami still playing in his college system not needing to learn a new system. Miami had MUCH more talent than we did on O and was expecting to be a playoff team. we were supposedly the worst team in the league yet we finished in 2nd place ahead of you.

Again, I think comparing coaches is very difficult and very subjective....but....

Rex

Year Offense Rank Defense Rank
2009 20th 1st
2010 11th 3rd
2011 25th 5th
2012 30th 8th
2013 25th 11th

All teams have injuries and all teams have bad games....it is going to happen. However if you look at the body of work, you could easily make a strong argument that Rex and former GM Tannenbaum had an issue with the players they picked and brought in to improve this team. He has regressed every year on defense which is his strength and the offense has been woeful. Rex brought a lot of his former Raven players to the Jets and it worked when they were young, but as they aged, he has struggled to replace them.

If after 5 years, Philbin also has this type of record, then I will be the first to tell you that they are very similar and Philbin should be fired. However at this point, there is a huge difference in talent between the team Rex inherited in 2009 and the team Philbin got in 2012. Lets let Philbin have a similar amount of time and see how he does.

Tannehill was just as bad for us in our second matchup as Geno was for you in our first, so again, why does Philbin get the blame for bad coaching while Rex gets to use the excuse of bad QB play?

already answered that, see post 54

you will be doing cartwheels if Philbin has 4 playoff wins and 2 title game apps after 5 years.

Yes, and you will have to make room on your couch for Rex to be sitting with you watching.

my one concern is how will the QB develop, if he does we can be contenders next year. if not it could end Rex. I expect we'll have a big time D next year and we can run the ball. will we surround the QB w/ weapons and will he improve?

power rankings for head coaches... yes we are officially in the dog days of the offseason

Your point is? should he be lower than Joe b/c Joe's team failed and his team took advantage?

Personally I don't care where he is ranked. He had success because Baltimore and Miami both failed to get into the postseason. Is he a better coach than Joe Philbin? Record wise and getting into the playoffs? Yes.

If you really wanted to get into the nitty-gritty as to why he is ranked higher than Philbin has a look at what is the ranking based on in the first place. If Joe Philbin had Philip Rivers as his quarterbacking either of the last two games with Miami have one and gotten into the postseason? I'll be see those things don't matter because they are not reality but that just goes to show that certain coaches get to where they get to because of their players in Miami didn't have that this year.

Philip Rivers is not very good and Philbin had a young and more athletic Tom Brady(so I have heard) against 2 non playoff bound teams. you can make all the excuses you want but Miami had the best shot of the WC contenders for the 6th seed and they failed- that's a huge mark against Philbin.

What made the team capable of making the postseason? Because they had a shot at the postseason?

the shopping spree in the offseason, a young QB improving, a top 10 defense, good STs, tons of weapons on O and a weak field in the AFC.

Are people still defending Philbin? The dude was the definition of mediocre all season long and then, for those who didn't realize how painfully average he is, he blows the last two must-win weeks cementing his position as a mediocre or worse coach.

Don't defend him compared to Rex Ryan or McCoy or anyone... it doesn't matter if he is better than any of them (he's not), all that matters is that he hasn't gotten the job done, period.

If Rivers isn't a good QB how did McCoy get them to the playoffs?

When has spending a lot of money in an offseason in the NFL ever amounted to anything? Washington tried it and failed. Philadelphia tried it and failed. Miami tried it and failed.

Tannehill is still a young QB improving but that doesn't make them the favorite. Top 10 defense in what terms? Explain how the STs were good? Sturgis missed kicks and Marcus Thigpen was an average returner at best. Brandon Fields is the only guy worth mentioning on ST.

Where are the tons of weapons on offense? They had Hartline, Miller and Thomas last year. Adding Wallace helped but wasn't the homerun they were looking for. Keller gets hurt in the preseason and is out for the year. Brandon Gibson was looking pretty good until his season ending injury vs NE in the 1st half of the year.

Where exactly did Miami had tons of weapons on either side?

he got the most out of Rivers, Rivers is decent but has always been overrated. Notice how they won their playoff game? they didn't allow Rivers to lose it, brilliant coaching.

a 2nd yr QB just won the SB, our 1st and 2nd yr QB made title games, keep was a 1st year starter last year in the SB, Flacco made the title game as a rookie, etc... I don't buy the young excuse.

Wallace wasn't the HR threat b/c they didn't have a QB who could get him the ball. you had excellent weapons when healthy, after the injuries you still had good weapons.

The "shopping spree" is a bunch of journalistic hyperbole that haters like to employ as a cudgel to beat Philbin, but lets be honest.

We may have signed a bunch of weapons

But...
We let Dansby, Burnett, Bush, Long, Smith walk. That is not an insignificant amount of talent walking out the door.

Keller was hurt before the season began and Gibson was hurt at the midway point just as he was becoming a factor in the offense.

When you add to that the deletion of Martin and Incognito from the squad...

Where do you get this narrative that we massively upgraded the roster?
I don't see it.

Yeah Phillip Rivers a 4 time pro bowler + 1 time alternate, 2010 player of the year, holder of numerous SD Charger passing records. Overrated Qb....
What a bunch of revisionist nonsense.

edit:
I will add he just went to his 5th pro bowl.

they let those guys go b/c they thought they were upgrading and overall you had more talent and playoff caliber talent.

If keller doesn't get hurt does Clay get a chance to play as much and perform as well? that injury was a blessing in disguise for you.

Losing Gibson hurt but you had a losing record with him.

pro bowl means nothing and he was an injury replacement this year.

when did he win 2010 player of the year?

he had the most talented team in the AFC for years and made ONE title game- in the div rd win he got hurt and left the game w/ SD trailing. he's been overrated for many years b/c he is a good fantasy QB.
